WATTS PREVIEWS BEGIN FEBRUARY 5 - OPENING NIGHT IS FEBRUARY 13 LOS ANGELES (December 19, 2018) – Geffen Playhouse today announced the full cast for its production of Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole, written by Tony and Olivier Award nominee Colman Domingo (Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, If Beale Street Could Talk, Fear the Walking Dead) and Patricia McGregor (Place, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Skeleton Crew), directed by Patricia McGregor and featuring Emmy Award nominee Dulé Hill (Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk; The West Wing; Psych) as Nat “King” Cole. This marks the West Coast premiere for the production, which made its world premiere in 2017 at People’s Light, one of Pennsylvania’s largest professional non-profit theaters. Under the auspices of the Geffen Playhouse, the production from People’s Light has been further workshopped, songs have been added and the play has continued to evolve. However, before Obama’s election, a black American president had already appeared in popular culture, especially in comedic and sci-fi/disaster films and television series. Thus far, scholars have tread lightly on fictional black presidents in popular culture; however, those who have tend to suggest that these presidents—and the apparent unimportance of their race in these films—are evidence of the post-racial nature of these texts. However, this dissertation argues the contrary. This study’s contention is that, though the black president appears in films and televisions series in which his presidency is presented as evidence of a post-racial America, he actually fails to transcend race. Instead, these black cinematic presidents reaffirm race’s primacy in American culture through consistent portrayals and continued involvement in comedies and disasters. In order to support these assertions, this study first constructs a critical history of the fears of a black presidency, tracing those fears from this nation’s formative years to the present. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 © Copyright by Alice Elizabeth Royer 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Neoliberalism, Citizenship, and the Spectacle of Democracy in American Film and Television, 1973-2016 by Alice Elizabeth Royer Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor William McDonald, Co-Chair Professor Johanna R Drucker, Co-Chair This dissertation examines American films, miniseries, and television shows that center on the democratic process, mobilizing it in the service of stories that both provide intense narrative and visual pleasures, and offer satisfaction in the form of apparent knowledge gained about the inner workings of electoral politics in the United States; these media texts are here theorized as “democracy porn.” Significantly, democracy porn emerges alongside neoliberalism, and its proliferation mirrors that ideology’s meteoric rise to prominence. As such, the dissertation considers texts made since the advent of neoliberalism in 1973, and up to the US presidential election of 2016, which marks a major shift in the meanings and values associated with democracy porn. Through historical, textual, and discourse analysis drawing on critical theories of affect, citizenship, and neoliberalism, the dissertation interrogates the complex ways in which democracy porn is constructed and functions within and surrounding moving image ii texts. The project thus tracks the ways neoliberal ideology manifests in the media texts in question, as well as how the consumption of these texts impacts viewers’ understandings of their own citizenship within a democracy increasingly steered by neoliberal principles. -

Type: TV Drama Show: The West Wing (Season 2, Episode 22, Air Date: 5/16/2001) Writer: Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, Moneyball, The Social Network, Steve Jobs) What you need to know to help you plot the plot: This show follows U.S. President, Jed Bartlet, and his staff as they attempt to navigate their term of public service in the Whitehouse. He is Catholic, attended Notre Dame, and considered becoming a priest (until he met his wife). He has a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, wrote an economics textbook, and won a Nobel Prize in Economics. He has a fierce intellect and a fondness for trivia, and he enjoys quizzing his staff. He is a member of the Democratic Party and is up for re-election, but it’s a rocky road. He has been stricken with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but he’s never revealed it publicly, so the perception that he lied to the American people becomes an obstacle politically.* There was a recent assassination attempt on his life, and one of his staffers, Josh Lyman, was nearly killed. Delores Landingham, the President’s secretary (who is older than he is), was killed in a car accident after she bought her very own first car, and this episode involves her funeral. He cares deeply for her, and it is in this episode that we begin to understand why. John Hoynes is mentioned briefly. He is the current Vice President and would be the favored candidate if Jed Bartlet decides NOT to run again. -

[end excerpt] [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly. I’m Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And I’m Joshua Malina. HRISHI: Today, we’re discussing episode three of season one of The West Wing, “A Proportional Response”. Later on, we’ll be joined by Dulé Hill, who makes his first appearance as Charlie in this episode. JOSH: Very exciting, our first guest. HRISHI: But first, Josh, what did you think? JOSH: I’m not going to be coy, Hrishi... I loved it. I think it’s a pretty great, rich, layered, firing-on-all-cylinders episode. As much as I loved one and two, something blossomed in this one, where it’s sort of rich and everything’s coming together in a very enjoyable and thoughtful way. HRISHI: I totally agree. This is really, I think, our first taste of a 10 out of 10, fantastic episode. JOSH: Mmm hmm. And an indication of what this show can and is going to be. HRISHI: So, the episode is called, “A Proportional Response” and on the surface, the title is about the military action against Syria for taking down the plane that Morris Tolliver was on, as we learned in the last episode. But I think there’s actually a great metaphor. It’s a great phrase for a lot things that are happening in this episode. There are these, sort of, analogous dichotomies that are set up throughout the episode.
