  • Disney Specialist's Walt Disney World Travel Guide
A Disney Specialist's Walt Disney World Travel Guide Honors Thesis (Honors 499) By Samantha Maynard Thesis Advisor: ~~~'-I? /-;§;~ Melvin Sharpe, Department of Journalism Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana Spring 2004 Graduation May 2004 This thesis could not have been completed without the help of several individuals. The support and patience I received made this possible. Melvin Sharpe, Thesis Advisor - Dr. Sharpe led me step-by-step through the processes I needed to complete not only for his requirements but those of the Honors College. His advice was invaluable and his time even more so. Thank you, Dr. Sharpe, for all that you did for me. Amanda Goings and Heather Goad - Two friends who spent more than their fair share of time listening to me prattle on about Walt Disney World, and provided much needed comic relief. Rosalyn Dowling, Disney Travel Specialist - Ms. Dowling helped fuel my fire when it came to creating this project. Her knowledge and expertise were excellent resources. And finally ... My parents, Jon and Debbie Maynard - The support you have given means more to me than you will ever know. My grandparents, John and Betty Maynard - Gramps and Granny, you never stopped encouraging me. This thesis is dedicated to the memory of my Mom, January 30, 1956 - July 28, 2003. Photo in front of the Imagination Institute on my 21 sl birthday, September 26, 2002. This thesis is divided into two distinct halves. The first half is meant solely for the reader to understand why the thesis was created, how it was created, plus the results and conclusions derived from the research.

  • Fireworks Technology
June 28, 2004 DISNEY DEBUTS NEW SAFER, QUIETER AND MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY FIREWORKS TECHNOLOGY First Major Pyrotechnics Breakthrough in Decades GLENDALE, Calif. - June 28, 2004 – After years of research and testing, Walt Disney Imagineering has perfected a new innovation in fireworks launch technology, marking the pyrotechnic industry's first major breakthrough in decades. The new technology uses compressed air to lift fireworks, virtually eliminating the need for smoke-producing black powder and other materials at launch, significantly reducing ground-level smoke and noise while continuing to provide a highly entertaining show. The air launch system debuted when the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, recently unveiled its new summer fireworks show, "Disney's Imagine – a Fantasy in the Sky." "The development of this cutting-edge science is the result of many years of hard work, testing, and a long-term initiative," said Walt Disney Imagineering Chief Scientist Dr. Ben Schwegler. "We are proud to be pioneering this innovative and beneficial technology." As a recognized industry leader and the world's largest producer of fireworks shows, Disney is in the process of donating all seven patents associated with the new air launch technology to a non-profit organization so these patents can be licensed to other pyrotechnic providers. Those efforts are being applauded by the American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) www.americanpyro.com, a nationwide advocate of fireworks safety standards. "It is commendable for Disney to share this breakthrough with others," said Julie Heckman, APA Executive Director. "This environmentally friendly air launch technology demonstrates how Disney continues to set a high standard in the fireworks industry." Disneyland in California is showcasing the air launch technology which is planned for other Disney parks around the globe.

  • Walt Disney World, Universal, and Beyond
05 539485 Pt05.pagX 11/17/03 12:31 PM Page 239 Part Five Orlando: Walt Disney World, Universal, and Beyond Introduction When Walt Disney flew over the Orlando area and selected 28,000 acres on which to build his theme park, he jump-started a multibillion-dollar tourism industry and forever changed the face of sleepy Central Florida. Truth is, the attractions got their start way before Walt, back in the 1930s when Richard Pope bought 200 acres along the shores of Lake Eloise near Winter Haven and created a water-themed park called Cypress Gardens, with daily ski shows (the park closed in 2003). Today, Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, and other attractions vie for the time (and dollars) of millions of vacationers. There are now more than 110,000 hotel rooms and dozens of man-made attractions that lure vacationers from around the world. Beyond the glitz of the themed attractions, there are little towns such as Winter Park, where you can wander amid the world’s most extensive col- lection of Tiffany glass in the Morse Museum of American Art; and Kissimmee, where camping, horseback riding, bass fishing, and the rodeo take precedence. The ocean may be miles away, but the lakes in Central Florida offer adventures from canoe rides to airboat treks through alligator country. Or you can traverse the St. John’s River, the state’s longest naviga- ble waterway, by pontoon or on guided boat tours. Covering 378,178 acres, Ocala National Forest is divided into three recreation areas linked by a 65-mile-long trail.
