3 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This has been a year of mixed fortunes. We have been competitive, from our 10Es through to our senior A1s, and on balance it cannot be said that we have had a bad year. The A3 senior team made the final and though not winning can at least claim the title of “Runners-up”. Of our junior teams the 16A, 14E and 10A made it through to the final and the first two achieved premiership status. To all teams, not only those I have mentioned but also to all others, I say “well done”. Cricket is not just a matter of winning there’s more to it than that. It is a team sport where success can be measured by effort, comradeship, sportsmanship, commitment and, fair play. It is far, far better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all. Old words but true. Although we slipped from first to fifth in the SSJCA Junior Championship we are one of the larger clubs and sometimes fortune does not always favour us in gradings. Those are the times when we need to try harder.

The demands on those responsible for managing the affairs of all sporting clubs continue to increase. In the past few years we have seen our game go from a simple Saturday sport to one now governed more and more by the need to address a plethora of requirements. Increasing incidents of insurance claims and court cases arising out of perceived lack of duty of care have demanded a parallel increase in the demand for responsible management by club officials. This in part has lead to the essential introduction of coaching accreditation. It has lead to increased awareness on what we do and how we do it. Community concerns relating to pedophiles has seen the emergence of “Working with children” legislation. Recently attention has been focused on Privacy legislation. And so the demands and level of responsibility increase. I am proud to say that our club management team has responded to these challenges positively and effectively. Lead by Club Secretary, Ian Latham, the committee has addressed all these matters and we have systems in place that permit all our players especially our junior ones to participate in cricket with a degree of confidence in the efforts taken to safeguard their welfare.

The well being of the club relies on all working together. This year we saw a disappointing response to the raffle and such was the interest shown in the Trivia night that we cancelled it. Through the loss of these two activities our income for the year has been reduced by something like two thousand dollars. Consequently we are becoming more and more reliant on sponsorship funding and this creates an imbalance in budget planning. For years our primary fiscal policy has been to keep fees at a minimum. Our secondary aim has been based on support for activities plus sponsorship. Together, these two items are the tools to provide not only supplementary funds to run a season but additional monies to allow for forward planning, development programs, equipment upgrades, and training facilities. So, the loss this year of two thousand dollars in income while not crippling in itself does impact on long term planning. Whilst I am not advocating an increase in fees I am urging greater support in our fund raising activities. We need greater involvement from all, not just a few. All too often the great majority mean well but forget to follow through. I ask that next year you give us the support we deserve.

Nevertheless all is not gloom and doom. The acquisition of a bowling machine was achieved this year through the astuteness and business skill of our Secretary (Ian Latham) who managed to secure a federal grant for this purpose. Had it not been for his work this valuable piece of training equipment would still be a dream.

This is my last report. I am retiring from all cricket activities. Since I first joined the Dragons in 1983 I have seen a lot of cricket. I am pleased to be able to say that in this period I have always played with a straight bat and expected others to do likewise. Apart from my long involvement with the Club, I have had the privilege of serving three years on the executive of the Sutherland Shire Cricket Umpires Association and five years on the executive of the Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association. In all I have had many enjoyable experiences. It has been a great 18 years but the time has come to say ”Enough!” It is time for a younger person to take over. As an Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Life Member, an honour of which I am quite proud, I will continue to be around and if I can assist gladly give my help.

Cricket is a great sport. I believe passionately that for little kids it is a great character builder and it teaches values of teamwork, commitment, honesty, and sportsmanship. A great poet once wrote, “and it’s not for the sake of a ribboned coat, Or the selfish hope of a season’s fame, but the Captain’s hand on his shoulder smote – Play up! Play up! And play the game! “

Though those words were written some hundred years ago the spirit of the game lives on and still today we can give the game no greater effort than to play it honourably and hard. Devoid of language, sledging and selfishness, we can lift the Club to greater heights if we all, from the youngest under ten player to our oldest Senior A1 player, “Play up! Play up and play the game!” God Luck to all future generations of Engadine Dragon cricketers.

Russ Waddell 4 SECRETARY’S REPORT

The 2001/2002 season saw another drop in junior player numbers across the Association, the Dragons were also affected by the down turn, registering six fewer players. As a result many sides had bare numbers and our 10E team had to play one short the entire season. We again fielded eleven teams made up of 122 players. In the senior ranks our numbers stayed pretty consistent with 80 registrations, two fewer than last season. We again fielded five teams.

On the field we had a mixed season in the juniors with a number of teams suffering from over grading. Our under twelve’s and fourteens were the most effected, and this was mainly due to these sides containing a large percentage of first year players in these respective age groups. The upbeat of this is that these same players will have gained a great deal of experience at this higher level and should be well placed to reap the benefits next season. Our senior sides were consistent across the board and their performances and placing on the point score table vindicate the gradings they received. Unfortunately a number of side’s results and standings were affected by the management of the competition, and not by their efforts on the field.

We again figured strongly in the Final’s Series with three junior, and one senior side contesting the final. Congratulations go to our Premiers, the 16A (Minor Premiers) and 14E teams. Commiserations to our runners up, the A3 and 10A sides. Special mention must be made of the extraordinary season the 14E’s have had, losing their first four matches they went on to win the next seven straight to win the title. Well done to Rob Lowe and all the boys on their great achievement. After winning the Club Championship last season we came back down to earth with a bang finishing in fifth place. Again the above mentioned gradings had a big impact on this result.

Yet again, the Club figured prominently at the representative level with twenty-one junior, and four senior players being selected to represent the Sutherland Shire in the NSWDCA Competition. An additional three juniors were selected in the Sutherland Shire District Grade Club’s Green Shield team.

On the financial side of things we were again well supported by our old faithfuls, Engadine R.S.L. & Citizens Club, Cosmo Lighting and Stewart Toyota. As a matter of interest this is the fifth season that Stewart Toyota has supported our Club, and I would like to thank Neil Jamieson for organising their generous sponsorship over those years. The Club also had two windfalls this season in the form of a Commonwealth Government Grant ($3,900) to purchase our bowling machine and an Australian Cricket Board Grant ($1,000) to upgrade the synthetic in practice net number one. Our only club fund raiser, the raffle, was unfortunately not well supported this season, hopefully this is not the start of a trend as Bob Price puts a great deal of effort in suppling the prize and chasing up tickets.

With the A.G.M. just around the corner, Wednesday 5th June to be precise, we will again be calling for nominations for all positions. As most people are aware the majority of the Committee has been serving the Club for a great number of years, the time has come for an injection of new ideas. A number of our Committee are looking to retire from their positions, myself included, so if you are interested please!!!! approach me, or any of the Committee for information of what the various jobs entail.

While we are on the subject of retirement, I would like to sincerely thank our retiring President Russ Waddell for the tireless work and time that he has devoted to the development of cricket in our Shire. Most people are unaware of the role Russ has played in cricket over the past eighteen years. At club level he has been a player, captain, scorer, manager, coach, M.C. at our Presentation Nights since 1987/88 and President for eleven years. On the S.S.J.C.A. Committee he was Secretary for four years and Vice President for one. Russ established, and guided the inaugural Sutherland Shire Cricket Council in 1999/2000 that united all the various cricketing bodies within our Shire. Over the years Russ has contributed generously to the sport he loves, and fittingly he has been acknowledge for his dedication and work with a Life Membership of our Club and by being awarded the following three prestigious awards, the Australian Sports Medal, the Hughes Award and the Mayoral Volunteer Recognition Award. Thank you Russ.

I would like to thank all members of our hard working committee for another great season. Thanks also to all our senior captains, coaches, managers and scorers that get the players on the field week in and week out. Thank you once again to Harry Robbins for his contribution. His assistance and knowledge is very much appreciated by all.

Last, but not least, thank you to all the parents, relatives and friends who gave great support and encouragement to the players during the year. Thank you to all our players and good luck to all our juniors who have played their last season of boys’ cricket, hope to see you in the senior ranks next year.

PERPETUAL TROPHIES AND AWARDS CRITERIA AS AMENDED 2001/2002 SEASON Note: • The Management Committee reserves the right to withhold the allocation of any award where in its assessment the criteria have not been met or for any other valid reason. • Where the assessment of the award calls for nominations, all such nominations must be in writing, with reasons in support. Nominations must be forwarded to be in the hands of the Secretary or Assistant Secretary by no later than two weeks after the date of the final last played or any other such date as the Committee may announce or publish. • In the absence of nominations the Management Committee shall consider the merits of each award and may determine a recipient on its knowledge of the available candidates. • The Management Committee may make any special award it sees fit to acknowledge special circumstances or to provide encouragement. • All considerations of the Management Committee and/or the Executive are confidential. Neither body shall be required to give reasons for the acceptance or rejection of any nomination.

GENERAL CRITERIA: To provide a measure of objectivity and consistency throughout all levels of the Club for the determination of performance awards, the following criteria shall apply uniformly: Where a bowler is competing with a batsman and/or keeping for a Club honour, the following system shall apply:

• For each 10 runs scored: - 1 point • For each wicket taken: - 1 point • For each catch/stumping made: - 1 point

Where two batsmen or two bowlers are vying for a honour/award the Management Committee will take into account the ratio of runs to innings, and/or wickets to overs noting the strike and economy rates and in each instance make judgment based on its assessment of all circumstances. The above may also be used for determining “All-rounders” but with respect to the junior, intermediate and senior divisions it is to be read in conjunction with the criteria specified.

INDIVIDUAL TEAM AWARDS: (Personal Trophies)

Junior and Intermediate Divisions: For all junior and intermediate teams engaged in competitive cricket there will be four awards presented. One for batting and one for bowling plus two others to be nominated by the Team Management (Coach and Manager). The Coach and Manager may recommend two awards from the following four categories, Most Improved Player, Most Consistent Player, Team Player and Best Fielder. For Batting, and Bowling the award will be based on the highest aggregates derived from the official Scorebooks. Aggregates include both innings but exclude finals. In the case of more than one player sharing the highest aggregate the player with the highest average will be awarded the trophy. No one person may win more than one of the above awards.

In addition, consideration will be given by the Management Committee to recognizing “all rounder” skills where the efforts of an individual player provide justification for an All-rounder award. As a guide, within the Junior Division, minimum 100 runs scored and 10 wickets taken (wicket keeper a minimum 7 catches/stumpings). Intermediate Division, minimum 150 runs scored and 15 wickets taken (wicket keeper a minimum 10 catches/stumpings). All awards shall be based on aggregates and be inclusive of first and second innings but exclusive of finals. The Management Committee will look at situations that parallel these performance levels and take such efforts into account.

Senior Division: To each team there shall be available awards for batting, bowling, and where earned All-rounder. For Batting, and Bowling the award will be based on the highest aggregates derived from the official Scorebooks. Aggregates include both innings but exclude finals. In the case of more than one player sharing the highest aggregate the player with the highest average will be awarded the trophy. To qualify as an All-rounder the recipient must have achieved in the year, no less than 200 runs scored and 20 wickets taken (wicket keeper a minimum 15 catches/stumpings). A player who represents the club in more than one team shall have all efforts credited. All awards shall be based on aggregates and be inclusive of first and second innings but exclusive of finals.

7 JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE DIVISIONS PERFORMANCE AWARDS: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Six (6) trophies awarded.

Batting Award: Shall go to the player within the Division nominated who scores the most runs in the season. There is no weighting for grade. The most runs will be the aggregate of all runs credited to the batsman as shown in the official score book and shall be inclusive of first and second innings. Runs scored in finals shall be excluded.

Bowling Award: Shall go to the player within the Division nominated who takes the greatest number of wickets in the season. There is no weighting for grade. The greatest number of wickets will be the aggregate of all wickets credited to the bowler as shown in the official score book and shall be inclusive of first and second innings. Wickets taken in finals shall be excluded.

Wicket Keeping Award: Shall go to the player within the Division nominated who as the wicketkeeper is credited with the greatest number of dismissals in the season. There is no weighting for grade. The greatest number of dismissals will include all catches and stumpings credited to the keeper as shown in the official score book and shall be inclusive of first and second innings. Finals shall be excluded. In the event of more than one keeper having an identical tally, byes but not leg byes shall be taken into account and the award made to the keeper with the lowest number of byes.

SENIOR DIVISION PERFORMANCE AWARDS: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) three (3) trophies awarded.

SPECIAL CLUB AWARDS:

Senior Club Champion: (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy). Determined by the Management Committee. Derived from an examination of the Scorebooks. Awarded to the most outstanding senior cricketer in the club who, through efforts with bat or ball has proved competitive at the higher levels of the SSCA Competition. In determining the merits of a batsman relative to a bowler (or wicket keeper) for the purpose of assessing this award the general criteria set above shall apply. While first and second innings shall count, finals will be excluded.

Club Champion (Junior and Intermediate divisions): (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy). Determined by the Management Committee. Derived from an examination of the Scorebooks. Awarded to the most outstanding cricketer in the junior or intermediate divisions, who through efforts with bat or ball has proved him/herself competitive at the higher levels (A or B Grade) of the SSJCA Competition. In determining the merits of a batsman relative to a bowler (or wicket keeper) for the purpose of assessing this award the general criteria set above shall apply. While first and second innings shall count, finals will be excluded.

JUNIOR & INTERMEDIATE CLUB AWARDS:

Most Improved Team: (Perpetual trophy, and personal trophy awarded to players, coach & manager) Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded to the team that on results shows improvements in the second half of the season relative to the first half. While the points scored acts as an indicator, the grading and age group of the team will be taken into account.

8 Bob Price Encouragement Shield: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Awarded to a player within the Junior and/or Intermediate Divisions. Determined by the Management Committee. The award recognises the need to encourage players. Any player may be nominated but the Management Committee will take into account age, performance, level at which played, years of experience. Commitment, effort, enthusiasm for the game are key determinants. Basically, and as simply as possible, the award is designed to encourage a young cricket to follow his love for the game through playing as long as possible. Generally, a more established player, playing at the higher levels would be seen to be in less need of encouragement than one coming through the levels.

Greg Heffernan Fielding Trophy: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded specifically for fielding effort. The number of catches taken is a factor but for a wicketkeeper allowance is made for the advantages of gloves. Considerations include alertness, speed and accuracy of returns, determination, and encouragement of fellow players, in particular bowlers.

Rookie of the Year: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded to a player who has completed their first ever year of competitive cricket and has displayed potential and enthusiasm for the game.

SENIOR CLUB AWARDS:

Outstanding Junior in Men’s Cricket: (Perpetual trophy and personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Determined by the Management Committee. Awarded to a player in the first full year ever of senior cricket that displays a high level of skill, ability, and potential.

EDCC SERVICE AWARDS:

Club Service Awards: Introduced in 1996/97, the whole purpose of the Service Award is to acknowledge continuous club playing service and promote pride in the club. The awards are in periods of five years, ie: five, ten, fifteen, twenty and at twenty-five years Life Membership may be awarded.

Club Member of the Year: (Perpetual trophy & personal trophy) Nominations are sought. Awarded to a club member who, gives freely of his/her time and energies in supporting the club in its activities. Management Committee members may be nominated in which event the Club Executive shall determine the recipient.

Life Membership: The Club Executive shall determine all nominations for LIFE MEMBER. While any club member may nominate any other club member to be a Life Member such nomination is to be in writing with reasons in support. The Club Executive is not bound to accept nominations or give reasons for rejection. In considering any such nomination it will be guided as follows. • The basic merits of each nomination. • The years and nature of service to the club rendered by the nominee. • Generally, but not exclusively, no less than ten years club service is seen as a minimum.

EDDC BRADMAN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:

This scholarship is to select two players from the under 12 age group, preferably from the one team, and send them to attend the July Talented Player Winter Camp conducted by the Bradman Foundation during the July school holiday break. The four day course is conducted at Bowral and course fees plus the Club will supply travel costs and pocket money. Each scholarship is valued at $350.

Preference will be given to selecting A grade players although the grade is not a major factor. Primarily the scheme seeks annually to identify two keen cricketers within the club, who will benefit from this experience and are deemed to have potential. At the same time they must be seen to be interested in pursuing cricket at the higher levels, eg. Representative and ultimately Grade.

The Management Committee with input from the coach of our highest graded under 12 team will make the selection at the end of each season. Selections are subject to informal acceptance by players and parents prior to places being reserved, funds committed and a formal decision being announced. The selection process is at the discretion of the Management Committee and no correspondence will be entered into.

NOTE: - EDCC JUNIOR BATTING & BOWLING RECORDS

In the 1990-91 season the junior competition rules were changed as follows: - from time limit to an over limit game, with restrictions on individual bowlers, the number of competition rounds were set at ten. Because of these alterations it was almost impossible for the old individual competition records to be broken, accordingly it was decided by the SSJCA to move the “old records” to a separate section. Therefore the following Junior Club Batting and Bowling Records are split into two sections: - (1959/60 to 1989/90) and (1990/91 to 2001/02).

RUNNERS UP

THE TEAM: - Jack Blayney (capt), Mark Rice (v/capt), Bryce Alewood, Sean Brogan, Jordan Duncan, Ryan Marlow, Dean McMillan, Sam Newman, Adam Smith, Ben Tidswell, Jordan Widjaya.

Over the events of a season the 10As had a tremendous one considering that it was made up of the bulk of last year’s 10C players plus 2 first timers. They should be more than proud in reaching the final only beaten by a better team on the day. The boys enjoyed giving their supporters a few close games that went down to the last few overs. The team managed to produce four players scoring 100 runs or more and 4 players getting 10 wickets or more through the season. The experience in A grade should do all the boys well for next year. It was a fun and enjoyable season and enjoyed by the Coach along with the boys. A big thank you goes to Will Lawson and Scott Middlemiss for filling in at the final when we were short. Both boys did very well.

BRYCE ALEWOOD: Spent this season parked behind the stumps as keeper. Started out slowly at first but as the season went on he really showed improvement. Once Bryce decides whether he wants to keep or bowl this will go well towards instilling confidence. Nonetheless it was a good effort from Bryce managing to snare 9 catches as keeper, four in one match. Also had a bowl in the last round picking up 2 wickets and finished the year with 69 runs. Will produce the goods when he overcomes the nerves.

JACK BLAYNEY: (captain). Had a fine year with the bat scoring 169 runs at 33.8. Has the potential to be a fine batsman capable of playing long innings when he puts his mind to it. Not a bad fielder in close on either side of the wicket. He showed he has the ability to take some pretty fine catches diving at full stretch and took 6 catches in all. Jack could also become a pretty handy left arm bowler with a bit of work.

SEAN BROGAN: What can you say about Sean? Sean was always volunteering and a willing participant to take up the position of number 11 batsman. No doubt in my mind that this was done with pure heart and energy. There is just one thing for Sean to realise, - the ball won’t hurt. His bowling shows potential if he sticks around a couple of years. After all, he did manage to end the season with eight wickets. Well done!

JORDAN DUNCAN: If there was a question to be asked you can bet Jordan would ask it, - this boy has the ability to talk under wet cement! This is on top of being a fine cricketer. An enjoyable year was had by Jordan getting 89 runs at 22.25, 15 wickets, plus 6 catches. He is another who runs like a rabbit across the field. As a bowler he is a useful opener. Jordan just bowled too good as most batsmen couldn’t get bat on ball. Has the makings of becoming an allrounder.

RYAN MARLOW: Another boy playing his first season of cricket ending with 89 runs at 17.2. Also along the way Ryan managed to pull in 7 catches, three of them being absolute classics. This lad has a rocket arm from the boundary all the way back to the keeper. Just great to see! Given another two years there is no doubt that he will go ahead in leaps and bounds.

28 DEAN MCMILLAN: Our leading run scorer for the season with 247 at 35.2. Managed to get two scores over 50 with the best being 85 not out. Your typical left hander Dean loves playing the pull shot to just about every ball. Once he learns to use his feet along with playing on the off side he will improve. This should then help him open up his range of scoring shots. Not the quickest across the turf but always gives his whole effort. Pulled of one of the catches of the year, which left him flat on his back!

SAM NEWMAN: A superb season with the ball was had by Sam who ended up as our leading wicket taker with 23 at the sensational average of only 6.3 (if only I could do that!). In the 23 was a bag of 6, which included Ben’s great hat trick. One thing is for sure, Sam puts everything into his cricket and has that never say die attitude. Throughout the season he had the ability to come on and get big wickets when needed. Congratulations on such a fine season.

MARK RICE: I just can’t say enough about this boy. Mark had a wonderful season scoring 214 at 26.7 with two fifties being 73, and 66. A very correct opening batsman with good control and concentration. Shows the potential and ability to produce big things in years to come. Mark just likes doing everything as well as he can managing to grab 11 wickets and take 7 catches also. An allrounder for years to come.

ADAM SMITH: Scored 139 runs at 23.1 and 10 wickets at 9.5 with 5 catches just shows that Adam had a good year with both bat and ball. The highlight for Adam was his big 50. His running between wickets improved during the season and he was getting quite cheeky by the last two games. As a bowler he is very economical and does not waste energy. A good line and length bowler. Should turn out to be a useful medium pace bowler in the years to come.

BEN TIDSWELL: Showed up every week playing with all his heart. As a batsman may have found A grade a bit tough for his technique. On the other hand, the opposition found Ben’s lethal bowling had them not knowing what to do. The result gave Ben 8 wickets at 14.3. A bit more luck and Ben would have got himself 10 or more for the year.

JORDAN WIDJAYA: Came to us for his first year of cricket scoring 30 runs. Naturally appears to be a bowler with some pace. Only needs to learn control and develop accuracy to fill his potential of becoming a very handy bowler. Runs like a rabbit across the ground with a great arm from the outfield. Will improve with another season under his belt.

THE TEAM: - Martin Bryan, Daniel Dwyer, Callum Falmer, Adam Fox, Liam Herne, Jordan Ivery, Matthew Launt, Alex Lawson, Will Lawson, Scott Middlemiss, Daniel Walsh.

4.30 pm Tuesday, August 28, 2001 saw a gathering of eight & nine year olds at the training nets at Engadine West Primary school which were to form the 10C cricket team. All were keen, all were inexperienced, all wanted to bat first. Training commenced and balls, bodies and assorted objects were flying in all directions, unfortunately they were supposed to be bowling in the nets at the time. The batsmen were quite safe though, as very few balls came their way. Driving home deep in thought, my youngest offspring, who had been one of the main players in shifting the art of cricket to a new level, observed ‘this team sux’. Perhaps there is telepathy between family members. Next week, in the interests of safety, the nets were avoided and the actual wicket was used. The team went to great lengths to protect the pitch - by not landing the ball on it. “I’ll try a spinner” cried a budding Shane Warne, as this bowler had bowled a number of medium pacers without hitting the pitch it seemed like a reasonable thought. It was an amazing delivery, having left the bowler’s hand a bit early it headed towards the heavens and did not appear to be rotating at all until, running out of momentum, it returned to earth to land on a rock some four feet off the pitch, shoot along the ground at right angles and nearly bowled the bored batsman. The question of who should open the bowling remained unanswered.

The big day arrived, the opposing coach was friendly but had a weird expression on his face – a look I had seen before somewhere- yes, brushing my teeth that morning it had appeared in the mirror. We got to bowl first and after much thought the bowling order was determined – reverse of the batting line up. First over yields 1 run, next is a maiden, followed by another and the pattern is set for the rest of the season – that being that I have no idea what is going to happen on any given Saturday.

To summarise the season and all that happened is not easy. Even a simple thing like the toss defied logic, we won four in a row only to loose the next 6. The team won three, tied one and lost six matches to take out 4th spot. Of the losses 4 were by small margins – 4, 4, 11 & 12 runs. In all but three of the games we scored more runs off the bat than the opposition but to offset this in all but two of the games we gave away more sundries. These statistics tell us the team was very competitive (we averaged 85.4 per innings & the opposition 90.7) and were not all that far away from making the finals. Enough of the stats. It was a real pleasure to coach this team; they are a great bunch. The batting was somewhat inconsistent but did improve throughout the season considering you don’t get to bat all that much in a 35 over game. The bowling was also inconsistent with some great balls bowled but sometimes followed by a wayward one, this was partly due to each boy normally only getting 3 overs each game (Two overs in the 1st spell followed by another over later on). It was the fielding that impressed most with balls being stopped by hands, feet, shins, stomachs and anything else they could get in the way in the early stages and progressed to pick ups on the run and deadly throwing. There were 14 run outs with 10 being taken in the last three matches – some of them absolutely brilliant.

The team always gave it’s all and there were some great contests. The two against Sylvania (eventual premiers) were nail biters. The first was a win to us with the winning run coming off the last ball and would you believe the 2nd game was even closer – yep, a tie, again with us forcing a run off the last ball. There were many great individual deeds but it was a real team effort with everyone happy, enthusiastic (can I bowl now?, can I wicket keep? etc.) and playing the game in the right spirit which made it such an enjoyable season. Also ensuring the season was a success were the parents who were always supportive and willing to pitch in and help – special mention to Scott Ivery our unflappable scorer, Paul Walsh the hard working manager, Sally Lawson the knowledgeable match result deliverer, Matthew Farmer the reliable ground keeper and especially Andrew Launt who’s assistance at training was invaluable. Some more thanks to Sally & Stephen Lawson and Norma & David Middlemiss who disrupted an entire weekend to help out the 10A team in the finals and Will & Scott for playing so well. The stars that made up the team are listed below, the order being carefully considered – the bowling line up of that never to be forgotten 1st game.

ADAM FOX: A real team man. Agreed to join the team when approached so that we could put 11 players on the field He was probably the most improved player of all, his batting was very solid, holding the side together on a number of occasions (his high score of 12 was as an opener) and had the rare distinction of hitting a four in his 1st ever innings. His fielding was always reliable, the bowling needs some work although he did pick up a couple of valuable wickets. Always smiling it was great to have Adam in the side.

DANIEL DWYER: Another great team player. He never complained, gave 100% and his bowling was always difficult to play, taking some important wickets. He really showed the coach when his 1st bowling spell did not yield a run. He needs to improve his batting technique but there is no doubting his courage as his highest score was achieved as opener. His fielding was safe, his attitude was always friendly and co-operative. He was a real pleasure to coach. Well done Daniel.

ALEX LAWSON: A real surprise packet. Not always relying on technique he hit up 50 runs for the season with a high score of 19 to be one of our top run getters. Once he improves his footwork and shot selection he will score a lot more. He had the distinction of taking our 1st wicket and with improving his line and length he will take a lot more. His fielding was always a source of interest, taking one catch using most parts of his body. Obviously enjoyed his cricket and we enjoyed having him.

DANIEL WALSH: A real gentleman. Daniel has an excellent bowling action and his fast medium deliveries caused the opposition plenty of headaches as evidenced against St. Pats when he took 2/6 in a great spell. He has the basics right in his batting with a high left elbow and straight bat and should improve as he gets older. He is also a fine fieldsman. What impressed me most was his sunny attitude, nothing could wipe the smile off his face. Attentive and keen to learn he is a coach’s dream.

30

MARTIN BRYAN: Had a very impressive 1st season. Martin was our leading batsman and twice had to retire at the mandatory 25 runs. A nervous starter, once past the initial overs his defence and shot selection was excellent and he could get on top of any bowler, a result of all his hard work in the nets. His wicket keeping was also impressive, having good soft hands and good movement towards the ball. He is a fine fieldsman being very safe and his tally of seven catches must be close to a record. Well played Martin we can expect big things from you in the future.

SCOTT MIDDLEMISS: A natural sportsman. Scott had an excellent season, finishing 2nd in the bowling averages and 4th in the batting. His bowling improved dramatically and towards the season end he was bowling very fast and getting good lift, his 2/5 against St. Pats was testimony to this. His batting relied on his good eye and natural timing to smash the ball all over the place – improvement in technique will see him score even more runs. His fielding is something to see, super keen he gives 100% and his full length diving catch of his Bosco mate will long be remembered.

MATTHEW LAUNT: A very promising fast bowler. Matthew was probably our fastest bowler, with a long run and a good action he had all the opposition batsmen jumping around and was 3rd on the wicket taking list. He was a very accurate, bowling most maiden for the team and conceding only two runs per over. His batting improved greatly due to him working hard on the basics and when his strength increases he'll score lots of runs. He is very fast in the field with a terrific throw, his run out against St.Pats caught everyone by surprise with the length of his throw. Well played Mat – staying in the 10s next year he should have a huge year.

WILL LAWSON: A marvellous 1st season. Will was our top wicket taker, consistently taking wickets throughout the season with his left arm medium fast around the wicket bowling with a best performance of 3/7. He is an outstanding fieldsman getting four run outs in the year, twice throwing the stumps down from side on. He has perfected a sliding technique, which enables him to gather the ball and return it in a twinkling. His aggressive running between the wickets brought a new dimension to the batting when he was at the crease. Keen and willing to learn it was great to have him in the side.

JORDAN IVERY: A budding Glen McGrath. Jordan was our second highest wicket taker, which was a great feat as he went wicketless in the first four games. His improvement was something to see and was a just reward for all the hard work he put in. Bowling off a long run he generated great pace and no batsman liked facing him. He is a fine fielder being very quick to the ball with a fast accurate throw. Another who will stay in the 10s next year, he should clean up. A very happy soul, nothing got him down and we were glad to have him in the side.

LIAM HERNE: Mr. Cheeky enthusiasm. Liam is all go, forever wanting to be wicketkeeper, have a bowl or bat next, a real bundle of energy. Being the youngest in the team he performed great feats. He was a very consistent batsman and finished 3rd in the aggregate, one of the few who was prepared to go down the wicket and meet the bowling, he played some fine innings. He has some potential as a leg spinner and can bowl good medium pace. He was our best appealer and his shouts of ‘HOWZAT’ when he took two wickets in one over were awesome. He always kept the coach on his toes and was great fun to have in the side.

CALLUM FARMER: A complete cricketer. Callum has a lot of ability and was one of our strongest players. He finished 2nd in the batting and equal 3rd in the bowling. In batting his technique and timing is very good and he is particularly powerful through the cover / mid off area. His 24no against Sylvania was especially memorable, hitting a shot through the covers off the last ball to win the game. His medium pace bowling was very accurate early in the season but waned a little towards the end – his best return was 3/8. A very fine fieldsman, Callum had a great year. Well played.

10E TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Lachlan Hay BOWLER: John Watson TEAM PLAYER: Mark Kidd MOST CONSISTENT: Brad Price

THE TEAM: - Daniel Brooks, Matthew Christison, Brandon Cross, Lachlan Hay, Mark Kidd, Bradley Price, Jarrod Small, Tiaan Walkington, John Watson.

What a great season we had after being graded in the 10E competition we impressed everyone with our strong bowlers and batters for such a young team. We managed to win six out of our nine games and if we had enough players for a full team we would have won a few more.

I’d like to thank Chris for coaching with me you did a great job. Thank you to all the parents for turning up and supporting the team and seeing two of the best coaches in action and the boys for putting a big effort at all the games and at training. You guys did great.

MATT CHRISTISON: Matt tried very hard at every game he played. He missed a lot of games but when he played you could really tell he was there, his fielding was brilliant and by the end of the season his bowling was excellent. Matt was very good with the bat, batting 4 times with 3 not outs he made sure the average didn’t go down. Well done Matt.

BRANDON CROSS: Brandon always put 100% effort into every game and especially when he batted, he was only dismissed once. Brandon was an accurate bowler who bowled well all season and picked the game up very quickly. Great season and good luck next year Brandon.

TIAN WALKINGTON: Tian was a pleasure to coach, he listened at trainings and during the games and was always keen to learn new things about cricket. Tian bowled well at times and in a few years will be a gun bowler if he keeps practicing. Tian has a solid batting technique and if sticks with the game he will go a long way. Well done Tian, you did very well buddy

MARK KIDD: Mark was the youngest boy in the team but that didn’t stop him from being a very accurate left arm bowler who gets them down there pretty quick. Mark captured 6 wickets and scored a few runs with the bat. Mark is a very good team player and showed potential to be a very good wicket keeper in the future. Well down mark, you did well.

JOHN WATSON: John’s first season of cricket was one of the best from a under ten’s player ever. He batted well scoring 95 runs and took 15 wickets, he is also a brilliant fielder. Congratulations on winning the team’s bowling award. Who could forget John’s brilliant hat trick, 3 wickets all bowled, not to mention all the big fours he hit. What about when the opposition umpire asked John not to bowl so fast, “it’s only under ten’s cricket”. Well done on a brilliant season, stick with cricket because you’ll go a long way.

LACHLAN HAY: Lachlan had a very good year with both the bat and ball, and I’m sure has many more to come. Lachlan is a very talented batsman with a good technique as well as being a great bowler. With the bat Lachlan scored 111 runs, only being dismissed on the one occasion, with the ball he took 8 wickets. Lachlan was also an excellent fieldsman taking good catches and possesses a stronger arm than mine. And he’s only eight! Lachlan stay with this game, you have a lot of potential.

BRAD PRICE: Brad was a pleasure to coach, he was another player that always put in 110% effort at training and at every game. A good consistent bowler with excellent line and length, Brad was also a very strong, and punishing batsman with a good solid defence. Brad took 7 wickets and scored 29 runs. Well done mate, seeya next year.

DANIEL BROOKS: Daniel was the quiet achiever of the side, a good team player that always encouraged the bowlers. Daniel could be relied upon to give his best for the team, whether it be with bat or ball. With more confidence when batting he will be scoring 50’s and 100’s every week. Well done Daniel.

32

JARRED SMALL: Another season in under ten’s cricket will see a great improvement in Jarred’s game. He looked good at times with the bat and with more confidence will do very well in his second season of this age group. Towards the end of the year his bowling started to really improve and I’m sure he will pick up swag of wickets next season. Well done Jarred, and thanks for trying so hard every match.

12A TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Andrew Jones BOWLER: Daniel Ward TEAM PLAYER: Cameron Heard FIELDING AWARD: Ryan Croom ALLROUNDER: Daniel Ward

THE TEAM: - Ryan Croom (capt), Daniel Ward (v/capt), Jarrod Boyle, Bryce Daenell, Cameron Heard, Andrew Herne, Greg Ings, Andrew Jones, Ben Latham, David McMillan, Brent Woodley.

Eleven young lads who showed great character both on and off the cricket field represented Engadine Cricket Club in the 12A competition this past season. With only three boys backing up from the same age group from the previous year, we were well aware that a tough season was to be expected. We were not wrong! I set our boys a tough but not an unrealistic goal of four wins from the ten matches to be played. Without being a political bean counter (and one to juggle figures to suit themselves) our final analysis read two wins, two defeats by the closest of margins (one went with the loss of the toss) a few others which found us competitive and of course a few floggings.

The first three games against the three heavyweights only demonstrated to our young side the strong competition expected. Round three we turned it all around with a fantastic win over Gymea, chasing 196 to win we passed them in the last over with Andrew Jones scoring a majestic 97 not out to steer us to a great victory. The commotion and emotion from all and sundry at the game will long be remembered. I guess with every high there must come a low. Round six saw Illawong (in my opinion the best side in the comp) smash 265 to our 87. As mentioned before, one of our floggings! From this point of the season the boys started to really believe in themselves, finishing the year with a very narrow loss to Sports and Gymea. The Gymea match was lost when we called the wrong side of the coin in a one-day game, a game played in atrocious conditions in the highest grass ever witnessed in a junior cricket game. As we had to bat first in the wet grass our advantage was forfeited. Our final match gave us our second victory in an easy win against Como-Jannali, again in another one-day game, this time it was our toss win in similar conditions.

Upon reflection of the season it is fair to say that the major differences from our very young side to the older heavyweights of the competition was 1) All facets of fielding and 2) The running between wickets. I promise we will improve significantly next season boys.

THE BOYS: Your attitude to the game was a credit to you. You always played in a most competitive and harmonious manner in a tough year. It was pleasing to see when a player dropped his head; one of his team-mates would offer encouragement. Camaraderie was never lacking in this side. I must congratulate Ryan Croom our skipper and Daniel Ward his deputy for a job well done, I am sure you both only benefited from the experience. The above good qualities of the young men can be attributed to the parental support our boys came to expect every week. Whilst mentioning support, what an easier task I had with the likes of Steve Jones, our manager and scorer, Ian Latham, our ball machine feeder and any other thing asked of him at training, also thanks to Peter Ward, a very strong back up.

RUMOUR MILL: Was there any truth in the rumour that the coach offered the player of the year a lift to school for a week in his old wreck (the blue bolter) of a Honda. All boys saw out the season, unfortunately the old bomb didn’t. Did I suspect a sigh of relief from someone!

Dennis Pendergast.

33

Boys promoted to the U/14 ‘s next season.

RYAN CROOM (CAPTAIN): I sincerely hope you enjoyed the challenge as captain this past season. Never an easy job, I was more than happy with your attitude to the tough task. Commencing the year as an opening bat and concluding in the middle order, Ryan always threatened the opposition with his power batting or his medium paced bowling. Ryan scored over a hundred runs, picked up 6 wickets and took equal top catches in a good season. A most dependable fieldsman, Ryan could be relied upon in any position. Thanks skipper.

GREG INGS: At long last I found someone who tried and I must say effortlessly out talk me. Is it any wonder that the two of us had to be separated at square leg. Another to suffer greatly from dropped catches during in his 65 overs, it would have been interesting to see how many wickets Greg would have totalled if all had gone his way. Add to this, runs when wanted, equal top catches, all added up to a good season. Greg made the President’s X1 this past season.

DAVID McMILLAN: Every side has a 110% team member; we were no exception to the rule with David being ours. David was normally our second to third change bowler and middle order batsman. Unfortunately on a few occasions had no choice other than to swing the bat in chase of quick runs, this he did unselfishly. Another one who because of dropped catches didn’t finish up the wickets he deserved. David scored an impressive 22 n/o when given an opportunity to open the innings. A good fieldsman anywhere, David normally patrolled the outfield where he was always used to the best advantage. Another boy who made the President’s X1.

Boys remaining in the U/12’s next season.

JARROD BOYLE: Playing his first year for the Dragons and only his second year in cricket, Jarrod had a good introduction in a very strong competition. Always willing to tough things out, he normally batted in the middle to late order but scored his top score of 13 opening the innings. His medium pace bowling brought him four wickets. Always a safe fieldsman I can assure all that no one is quicker over the field than Jarrod. He worked hard in the nets and was a keen listener. Will be a genuine all rounder for us next year when given more opportunities?

BRYCE DAENELL: Another new Dragon, Bryce came to us as a Foster Shield (Rep) keeper/middle order batsman from the previous season. A very keen young lad, Bryce held the No 3 batting spot for the year. He must have wondered what was happening when run out three times from the first five innings. Interesting to note that all of his dismissals were either caught or run out, proving his technique and stance is correct. Bryce had good scores of 49 and 28 in a total of 152 runs. Improving behind the sticks, he will do well next season. Bryce was another of our Creak Shield players.

CAMERON HEARD: Our opening left arm medium, Cammie one day in the nets toyed will left arm wrist (chinaman) spinners, well the smiles on the faces of the old brigade, Harry, Ian, Steve and myself told the storey! Can this lad turn a ball! No opposition had a clue about him, our keepers were kept guessing and I at the umpires end giggled for the remainder of the season. With the bat he scored his top score ever of 20 when needed. Always very safe at mid-off in the field, his next year should be a cracker. Cameron was also selected as a replacement to play in the Creak Shield side for one match.

ANDREW HERNE: Andrew showed remarkable improvement through the latter part of the season. He seemed to click into overdrive in the last four games with outstanding line and length. His 3-6 off four overs against one of the gun sides only encouraged him to better things. He swang the ball so much in the final game he finished with the Glen McGrath figures of 10-7-4-1, helping us to seal our second win. Andy was a big improver in all facets of the game. A big one next year Andy!

ANDREW JONES: Andrew faded away with the bat in the final four games, but not before playing some of the most competent displays of batting for a first year under twelve I have seen. If I thought his 59 (run out) was a gem, one only had to see his 97 n/o against Gymea to appreciate this boys talent. If his batting feel away somewhat, his bowling didn’t. Taking eight wickets for the season, seven of these came from the final three matches. Never one to be left out, a great year or not! Andrew was selected in the Creak Shield this past summer. Super stuff Andy.

34

BEN LATHAM: Ben again took on the role in opening the batting with Andrew J. When one compares Benny’s height difference to some of the older quicks he faced, was it any wonder that most deliveries seemed to be around chest high. I haven’t seen a player find so many unlucky ways of being dismissed. A full-blooded cut past point; a fierce hook to the fence would always seem to find an outstretched hand. With his good technique Benny will score heaps next season. His offies brought him 4 wickets from 21 overs. Benny was another to have made the Creak Shield side this season. Have patience mate.

DANIEL WARD: “The big quick” Daniel tendered to be a bit wide and short in the first half of the competition, but then it all came together, Daniel picking up 7 of his 11 wickets in the concluding 4 games. Again another above average season with the bat, scoring 150 runs with a couple of thirties. He never bowled faster than in the final game when a catch was taken off a no ball, (above waistline). Standing as square leg umpire I swear the batsman went white with fear as the next ball whistled past his probing bat at eye height. Daniel was also the opening quick for the Creak Shield. You’ll have a screamer next year mate.

BRENT WOODLEY: The Dragons other keeper and still big hitter (nothing seems to change) Brent found things a might tougher this past season in comparison to the previous U/10 season. He still pounded the ball unmercifully, still scattering fieldsmen and spectators alike as only he can do. His 46 against the ultimate premiers (after 2 ducks) was a gem. Bowled 8 times from 12 innings shows something Brent, but nothing we cannot work on. He finally talked me into having a bowl (actually 4 overs). Who was surprised more when he claimed a wicket? Less head dropping will see a far more productive season next year Brent. Brent was also a member of the Creak Shield team this season.

12D TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Ben Holt BOWLER: Colin Kidd MOST IMPROVED: Jared Brown FIELDING AWARD: Ian Mahoney

THE TEAM: - Ian Mahoney (capt), Jeffrey Walsh (v/capt), Daniel Alewood, Jared Brown, Matthew Hoff, Ben Holt, Colin Kidd, Craig Middlemiss, Liam Petrucco, Alex Sambuco, Andrew Sewell, Kristian White.

The season started off with the team being graded 12C’s. We were all fired up and rearing to go. The boys certainly gave their best, given the circumstances however, the first three matches were somewhat of a trial and unfortunately we lost all three. This resulted in the team being re-graded to 12D’s. It was a bit of a setback for the boys and I feel it took it’s toll on them psychologically but, they showed true determination and good fighting spirit giving 100% effort each week, which resulted in a turn around for the second half of the season.

I wish to thank all the parents for their support throughout the season. To the boys, you should be very proud of your performances each week. I know that I am. I think that each and everyone of you have developed your skills, which in time, with further practice, will improve out of sight and lead to bigger and better things.

Thank you to Craig and Lisa Alewood, who jointly took on the role of Manager, for your great managerial skills, support and friendship. To the finest ground staff – B1 and B2 (Paul Walsh and Keith White) thank you. You made sure that our boys were playing the game in a safe environment each week, also to Paul for standing in as 2nd score- keeper. I would also like to thank my wife – Kylie for doing such a good job as official scorer for the team.

Good luck to all the boys next year, I hope you will all continue to play cricket and most of all enjoy playing it.

35

IAN MAHONEY: (Captain) Ian has performed very well this season. Ian has taken the most catches (5) contributing with 1 run out and has shown some fast accurate bowling on the pitch and is always aggressive, giving 100% effort every game (6 wickets for 79 runs off 33 overs). The role of Captain is not an easy one, but Ian has taken it in his stride and I feel he will only improve his skills in this role with more exposure in the years to come. Ian’s batting has improved throughout the season (139 runs) this is also an improvement from last years total run score. Well done, Ian – a great season

JEFFREY WALSH: (Vice Captain) Jeffrey has had a good season this year. A much better result in the run department and his fielding has improved out of sight. Not as many wickets this year (7 wickets for 132 runs off 29 overs), but the wickets he has got were important and at the right time. Jeff is always happy and enthusiastic to get on and play the game. As Vice Captain, he has done a great job, initiating plenty of talk throughout the matches and also a WIN while standing in as Captain. Good season Jeff, I’m very pleased with your result.

DANIEL ALEWOOD: (Wicket keeper) The role of wicket keeper is not a task everyone can undertake, but Daniel took it in his stride, giving 100% concentration and effort each week. This is confirmed by his improvement in the declining number of byes as the season progressed. Daniel has also shown marked improvement in his batting – scoring a total of 43 runs for the season and just missing out by one run of achieving 25 runs to retire in one innings. He surprised us all in the last match for the season when he was given the opportunity to bowl in the last overs of the match – he displayed some fine bowling with his final figures 0 for 8 off 3 overs one of which was a maiden. A fine season Daniel, keep up the good work.

JARED BROWN: Jared joined the team after 1½ games into the season but has proved to be an asset to the team displaying continued improvement as the season has progressed Jared has always tried hard whether it be batting or bowling. With a great pair of hands in the fielding department taking some terrific catches in close positions. Jared, I can see some good things coming your way in this sport. Keep playing the way you are and you will do nothing but improve. Batting – 70 runs for the season and bowling – 1 wicket for 57 runs off 19 overs and 4 memorable catches

ALEX SAMBUCO: Alex has had a good season with the bat this year, playing some good strong shots and protecting his wicket at all costs – 57 runs. You struggled a little with the bowling, but being a leg spin bowler is not easy. A lot of the time you are the one the other teams wait for but with more practice you can challenge that theory. Bowling stats – 2 wickets for 99 runs off 25 overs and contributed with 1 run out. All-in-all Alex, a good strong season.

ANDREW SEWELL: Andrew has also had a good season in all facets of the game. Andrew has shown that he can bat well in the top of the order in positions 1 to 4, batting well when we were in the higher grade at the start of the season – total of 63 runs for the year. Andrew’s bowling and fielding was quite good as well with 3 wickets taken for 121 runs off 31 overs plus a scorcher of a catch, not many would have been able to hang onto. Well done Andrew, you can only improve from here, keep up the good work.

KRISTIAN WHITE: Kristian’s season was very impressive. His bowling has improved out of sight, bagging a few wickets along the way (4 wickets for 93 runs off 22.6 overs). His batting has also improved in run total and on average he is starting to enjoy protecting his wicket a lot more which is good to see. Fielding is still a bit slow but it is getting there. You are starting to use your hands a bit more, which is good to see. Doing well Kristian – Don’t stop now.

CRAIG MIDDLEMISS: Craig has had an outstanding season this year, especially with the ball. One can’t believe he’s never played the sport before now….He’s a natural. Good medium pace out swingers did the job, taking a bag full of wickets – 10 for 64 runs off 34 overs of which 7 were maidens, making the best bowling average for the team at 6.4 and also taking the most wickets in an innings for the season with 4. Craig proved to be a foe for the opposition and a real asset to the team. His batting was not too bad either, getting a good amount of runs for his first season (30) but, what stood out was an enthusiastic behaviour in the field with a very good and useful “Jonty Rhodes” style diving underarm throw, which I know will be very affective in the years to come. He also contributed with a run out. You should be very pleased with this effort. I know I am. Well done, Craig.

36

MATTHEW HOFF: Matthew had a great season. His performance with the ball was second to none and most enjoyable to watch. Matthew was an asset to have in the team, especially when it came to his bowling, displaying accurate deliveries which resulted with figures of 8 wickets for 70 runs off 36 overs, 13 of which were maidens – some of the best bowling I have seen. His batting was good, achieving a total of 37 runs for the season. This will only improve as the years go on. In the field Matthew has a very good pair of hands when a catch comes h is way. He also has a remarkable ability to hit the stumps down from a throw out in the middle of the field. All together a very impressive season performed only to the best way he knows how. Well done, Matthew I am very pleased with the way you play the game in the right spirit…. keep it up.

LIAM PETRUCCO: They say …”Good things come in small packages”, no truer saying could be said for the pocket rocket – Liam, who wears his heart on his sleeve and shows a continuous energy and love for the game, putting in 100% effort every week. You could always count on Liam to throw himself around the field and quickly chase down the ball returning it to the stumps with pin- point accuracy to reduce the number of runs. He attained 2 run outs and one catch for the season. Liam’s bowling also proved to be quite good with 6 wickets for 106 runs off 29.1 overs. Although his approaches to the pitch to bat were apprehensive, Liam showed great determination to stay at the crease and protect his wicket and gradually feeling more confident the longer he stayed out there. Scored 17 runs for the season. A fine effort Liam – don’t give up.

This year was not a good year for the 14A’s. It started well with a win in round 1 and finished well even though we lost round 10, five of our boys achieved their highest scores. Six of the boys played up from the last year into the A’s this year, an experience they will remember.

DYLAN ANDREWS: This was Dylan’s second year in the 14’s. He took 7 catches in the field, scored 119 runs at an average of 11.9. He bowled 50 overs and took 14 wickets for an average of 9.57. His high score was 32, which he scored, in the last game, which helped avoid an outright.

BEN JAMIESON: This was Ben’s first year in the 14’s and he was our wicket keeper 95% of the time he took 15 catches to give him an average of 2.0. He scored 91 runs for an average of 9.1. He bowled 11 overs took 1 wicket for an average of 38. His high score was 50 not out, which was also scored, in our last game.

AARON MALL: Aaron came from the 12A’s last year. He took 2 catches, scored 89 runs at an average of 9.89, bowled 75 overs, took 14 wickets for an average of 12.21, with his high score being 34.

ADAM LOGAN: Adam advances to the 16’s next year. He was our strike bowler. He took 6 catches, scored 57 runs for an average of 8.14, bowled 89 overs, took 16 wickets for an average 14.25. His high score was 16, which was also scored in round ten.

CAMERON TURNER: Cameron was our Captain this year and his second year in the 14’s. He took 4 catches, scored 150 for an average of 15, bowled 61 overs, took 17 wickets to give him an average of 8.4. His high score was 67, which he achieved in the first Round which we one.

37

CHRIS REEVES: Chris came up from the 12B’s last year. He took 2 catches, scored 31 runs for an average of 3.4. He bowled 35 overs, took 6 wickets giving him an average of 13.67. His high score was 15.

MATTHEW SAMBUCO: Mathew jumped up from the 14E’s last year. He took 4 catches scored 95 runs for an average of 8.6. He bowled 69 overs taking 11 wickets with an average of 13.45. His high score was 30, which he scored in the first round resulting in our only win.

TOM HEATH: Tom was another one from the 14’s. He took 1 catch, scored 24 runs for an average of 3.4, bowled 42 overs, took 3 wickets for an average of 4.5. His high score was 5, which he achieved in our last game, to help avoid an outright.

14B TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Rowan Scott BOWLER: Matthew Thompson MOST CONSISTENT: Chris McMahon TEAM PLAYER: Joshua Scott

THE TEAM: - Jaryd Duncan (capt), Glenn Caukill, Joshua Christison, Alex Jones, Ben McMahon, Chris McMahon, Jesse Owen, Chris Sands, Joshua Scott, Rowan Scott, Matthew Thompson.

I don’t mean to sound like a “whinging” coach, but I believe the team was over graded considering this was the first year for 9 of the 11 boys in the under 14’s competition. However, having said that, the game is all about a team effort and I would like to thank all the boys for their efforts throughout the year and for showing commitment as part of a team. If we could have won a few more games early in the season, listened closer to the coach, and had self-confidence, who knows what would have happened. Special thanks to our manager Errol McMahon for all his great help and assistance during the year, especially in writing and collecting the match reports and organising the boys on match days. Also a big thank you to our scorer Suanne McMahon for doing a magnificent job each Saturday. Thanks also to all the parents for their support and help with odd requests for assistance. The team has been a pleasure to coach and I look forward to the challenge again next year.

ALEX JONES: Alex should be pleased with his overall performances, especially with his bowling but would probably have liked to score a few more runs with the bat. A medium pace bowler who bowled good line and length and batted in the order from opener to tail ender. He scored 60 runs (average 3.75) and captured 12 wickets (average 12.42) and took 6 catches. Alex still has plenty of room for improvement in his batting and bowling techniques but with a bit extra effort his skills level will develop further. Congratulations and well done Alex.

BEN McMAHON: Ben performed very well throughout the season and should be very happy with his results and contribution to the team effort. He is a capable fieldsman, a good offy who gives the ball plenty of flight, a developing batsman and the No.1 “do up your shoe laces”. He scored 83 runs (average 7.55), captured 8 wickets (average 19.1) and took 7 catches. He is a capable cricketer in all facets of the game who will improve his skills level in the coming years. Well done Ben.

CHRIS McMAHON: Chris didn’t score as many runs or take as many wickets as he would have liked (and as his ability suggests), but was very consistent with the bat and ball throughout the year. Rarely did he bowl the ball off the wicket and always kept a good length. He is a hard-hitting batsman who wants to get on with it. He scored 153 runs (average 10.2) and captured 12 wickets (average 12.66) and took 5 catches. Chris gave his best each week and is a worthy winner of the Most Consistent Player Award. Well done Chris. 38

MATTHEW THOMPSON: Matthew is a very capable medium/fast pace bowler and lower order batsman. He was our opening bowler who has a nice outswinger and generally bowled good line and length consistently all year. He captured 14 wicket (average 11.86), scored 64 runs (average 4.57) and took 6 catches. Well done Matthew and congratulations on winning the Bowling Award.

ROWAN SCOTT: Rowan also was one of our most consistent players in all aspects of the game. He is a medium/fast bowler who usually batted at number 4 or 5. Rowan had a good overall season where he scored 202 runs (average 14.43), captured 6 wickets (average 21.5) and took 3 catches. As a batsman he displayed some handy hitting in many games and solid defence when needed. He is a very handy bowler and should have taken more wickets this year but often tended to bowl too short. Something for his coach to work on in the future. Well done Rowan and congratulations on winning the Batting Award.

JOSHUA CHRISTISON: Joshua was also one of our mainstays in the batting department, and although he didn’t score as many runs as he is capable of doing, he put in some good performances for the team effort. He scored 102 runs (average 7.85), captured 3 wickets (average 16) and took 4 catches. His medium pace bowling will improve with a little more concentration and self-confidence. Congratulations Joshua on an overall good season.

CHRIS SANDS: Chris had a reasonable year with the bat, ball and in the field, but his true ability was hampered early in the season when he sustained a broken hand. He scored 57 runs (average 5.18) and captured 5 wickets (average 26.6). A left-handed batsman who can thump the ball with the bat and a developing left-hand medium/fast bowler with nice drift and swing. Like others in the team, he needs to keep the ball up more and will improve with a little more concentration. Well done Chris.

JESS OWEN: Jess had a “mixed bag” year with both the bat and ball and has more ability than his figures show for the season. He scored 73 runs (average 6.63), captured 6 wickets (average 9.67) and took 4 catches. Who could forget the three catches he took in the last game after dropping two “sitters” beforehand. Congratulations and well done Jess.

JARYD DUNCAN: Jaryd is another player who had a “mixed bag” season when you consider his ability. Jaryd did a fine job as captain but he’ll have to learn to call the correct side of the coin. He scored 79 runs (average 5.64), captured 6 wickets (average 14.83) and took 3 catches. Jaryd was our mainstay spinner who bowled well consistently throughout the season and was unlucky not to have got more wickets. He also did a fair bit of keeping in the first half of the season. Well done Jaryd and congratulations on a good effort this year as “Captain”.

JOSHUA SCOTT: Joshua was our opening batsman who could never start a game with the same partner. Josh never thought twice about going in first and trying to obey the coach’s instructions. He was our mainstay keeper who did a marvellous job behind the stumps most weeks. He scored 29 runs (average 2.23), took 2 catches and captured 7 wickets (average 16) when not keeping. He is also a capable cricketer in all facets of the game who will improve his skills level in the coming years. Congratulations Joshua on your performance and winning the Team Player Award.

GLENN CAUKILL: Glenn’s bowling and fielding are his strengths even though he still went very well with the bat on the odd occasion. He scored 76 runs (average 6.33), captured 7 wickets (average 21) and took 3 catches. He is a medium/fast bowler who can swing the ball both ways but bowled a touch short this season. With a lot more concentration on bowling and batting techniques, his skill level and ability will improve even more in the future. Congratulations Glenn on your efforts throughout the year.

14E TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Omar Samad BOWLER: Thomas McNee MOST IMPROVED: Kurt Mitchell FIELDING AWARD: Dane Le Ray ALLROUNDER: Omar Samad ALLROUNDER: Ryan Woodley

PREMIERS

THE TEAM: - Peter Balmer, Corey Davis, Kevin Dwyer, Dean Fenner, Dane Le Ray, Michael Lowe, Thomas McNee, Kurt Mitchell, Omar Samad, Andrew Stuart, Ryan Woodley.

Congratulations to all of the team who were always enthusiastic and really deserved the successes that they worked so hard for during the season. It just goes to show that when players are prepared to listen and put in their best efforts the results will follow. Whatever this team may have lacked in experience they made up for in sheer determination and could rise to any occasion when they put their minds to it. My opinion is that every single player has improved their overall game.

I do not wish to single out any individuals for special mention because cricket is indeed a team game. Any single stroke, catch, delivery or throw can mean the difference between winning and losing. I am pleased to say that the 14E’s always played as a team, regardless of the result.

The proof of this was never more evident than in the final. Every member of team contributed directly to the result. After giving Caringbah Sports a seemingly easy target of 70, the boys put in a flawless effort in the field. They encouraged each other, backed each other and did all those things that the coach usually had to remind them about. Every catch that was offered was taken, including two of the three best I witnessed all season. Even the sundries were kept to six, the first time they had failed to reach double figures. In the end the opposition was dismissed for 52 in 25.2 overs. Though they must have been bitterly disappointed, it must be said that Caringbah were gracious in defeat.

To my diligent and hard working manager Roger I’d like to say a big thank you for your encouragement, assistance with the umpiring duties and help in organising the team, making my job so much easier.

Rob

My thanks must also go to: - • Our ever present scorer, Rob, for doing such a wonderful job of keeping track of the game each week. • Harry Robbins for assisting me at training each week. • Those parents, grandparents and friends who came along and gave the players, and us, their support.

Please read on and meet the team:

PETER BALMER: Even though this was his first year of cricket Peter worked hard throughout the season to improve his all round game. He plays a good straight bat and bowls an outswinger, which any medium pacer would kill for. Peter will continue to improve, time and patience willing.

COREY DAVIS: Corey is more than capable with both bat and ball, and only needs to back himself a bit more to get the best out his game. He can hit the ball hard and delivers a very useful inswinger that earned him a few wickets. Another good effort.

KEVIN DWYER: Kevin was one our most consistent bowlers this season, usually on the spot with his length. He picked up most of his wickets bowling outswingers that can only be described as ‘hugh’. Enthusiastic in the field, Kevin will have a go at anything in the air and was directly responsible for a couple of smart run outs.

40

DEAN FENNER: Dean impressed me with his enthusiasm. He was one of the big improvers this season. When at bat he has a good solid defence and loves playing the pull shot against anything short of a length. He worked hard all season trying to get his ‘leggies’ just right, his efforts being justly rewarded with the occasional wicket.

DANE LERAY: The quiet achiever of the team. Dane is an exceptionally good fielder who doesn’t let much get through. He has a safe pair of hands and a strong throw that keeps the batsmen honest. He is also a good striker of the ball capable of lifting the run rate when required. His inning in the final gave us a lift at a vital time.

MICHAEL LOWE: Bowled well all season, keeping the ball up to the batsmen and giving away very few runs. He can only be described as unlucky not to have picked up more wickets when you consider he gave away less than two runs per over. Though not the quickest in the field he doesn’t let much get past him, especially when it’s in the air.

TOM McNEE: Right from the outset Tom showed he was keen and determined, always being involved in the game and being one of those who encouraged others with his enthusiasm. All his hard work was evident in the way his batting and bowling improved significantly over the season.

KURT MITCHELL: Another one of our new players who was easily our most improved. He always put in his best effort whether batting, bowling or in the field. Kurt’s ability grew with self confidence and became a very capable cricketer who will only get better with age. His catch in the final was an absolute gem.

OMAR SAMAD: Omar’s batting was consistently good resulting in some fine innings and high scores. His average was above 50. He was also devastatingly accurate with the ball, making life extremely difficult for anything resembling a set of stumps. Watch for this name in the higher grades next season.

ANDREW STUART: Andrew had a really good year. He was one of our regular openers and more times than not gave the team a good start. Extremely quick in the field and capable of extraordinary feats of athleticism given the chance. His wicket keeping in the final was as good as any I have seen in this age group.

RYAN WOODLEY: Ryan is another of our allrounders who should be more than pleased with his efforts this year. He notched up some fine innings as our other opener, kept the score down when bowling his leg spin. When not bowling he spent some time behind the stumps showing he was more than capable with the gloves as well.

41 16A TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Ryan Shepherd BOWLER: James Gardner MOST CONSISTENT: Chris Nelson MOST IMPROVED: Mitchell Durie ALLROUNDER: Brett Bullock ALLROUNDER: Jay Davis

PREMIERS & MINOR PREMIERS

THE TEAM: - Stuart Brandman (capt), Toby Nash (v/capt), Brett Bullock, Jay Davis, Mitchell Durie, James Gardner, Michael Lavallee, Chris Mahoney, Chris Moreland, Chris Nelson, Ryan Shepherd.

This team with seven Rep players proved far too strong for their opposition. Only narrowly losing one match over the season to Illawong in a reduced 30 over match before defeating Illawong in the final, clinching the clubs fourth 16A premiership.

The following figures show how superior the team was in comparison to their opponents.

In their 11 matches consisting of 14 innings the opposing teams in 60 overs matches never batted beyond 47 overs. Season’s innings lasted between 22 and 32 overs and 6 innings 37 to 47 overs. Season’s innings average of only 34.5 overs losing 104 wickets totaling 1338 runs at an average of 12.87 runs per wicket lost. When batting we lost 72 wickets scoring 2182 runs at an average of 30.30 runs per wicket lost.

The team was led by Stuie Brandman with Toby Nash his deputy and they carried out the match plans in excellent fashion. The boys were a happy group and encouraged each other to do well. With every boy wearing the clubs baggy cap, they looked like a cricket team and great credit goes to their parents for their efforts.

Another reason why we have such a successful team is that we have no problems with finding efficient scorers and umpires. Peter Lavallee, Paul Davis, Ron Shepherd and Geoff Gardner were always willing to help. Peter is the Manager every team envies, never complaining and enjoying the tasks he was involved with.

To the seven boys who leave boys cricket we wish them all the best for the future and thank them for their efforts whilst playing for our club.

Stuie & Harry

All figures shown include the final scores: -

STUIE BRANDMAN: (Captain) 136 runs Ave 13.6 6 wickets Ave 8.33 Rep Team – Watson Shield - Stuie now has the 100% record as a captain, he also captained the Premiership 14A Team in 1999/2000. Had problems with his batting early in the season with a broken finger but came good with a great 67 runs in round 7 and top scored in the final with 48 runs. His enthusiasm whilst fielding was of usual high standard.

TOBY NASH: (Vice Captain) 323 runs Ave 32.3 2 wickets Ave 20.0 Developed into an excellent opening batsman sharing in several large partnerships with Jay. They shared a 150 run partnership in their first match together. Toby was also an excellent fieldsman in any position.

CHRIS MAHONEY: 89 runs Ave11.13 8 wickets Ave 13.0 Rep Team - Watson Shield – Chris never received the opportunities with his handy offies, mainly due to the opposing teams being dismissed so cheaply, but still captured 8 wickets. His fielding was excellent making the difficult position of point his domain holding 8 catches.

42 RYAN SHEPHERD: 571 runs Ave 57.1 Catches 8 Rep Teams – Green & Watson Shield – A great attacking batsman scoring 2 centuries this season totaling 5 for the LAST 3 seasons in A grade cricket besides making 1781 runs at an average of 74.21. Brilliant fieldsman in any position taking 8 catches. Best of luck with your cricket for the grade club next season.

JAY DAVIS: 289 runs Ave 41.3 16 wickets Ave 10.5 Rep Teams – Green & Weblin Shield, C.H.S Sydney East – Jay has matured into a genuine young all rounder excelling as a steady opening bat and a promising leg spinner, also a top fieldsman. Next season in the 16A’s he will be one of the leading cricketers in the shire.

MICHAEL LAVALLEE: 280 runs Ave 56.00 Rep Team - Weblin Shield – Mick scored a great century and just missed out with a 97. A great attacking batsman who rose to the occasion when needed and at the Xmas break had an average of 130 runs. Big season next year Mick.

JAMES GARDNER: 36 runs Ave 7.20 19 wickets Ave 11.89 Rep Team – Weblin Shield – A talented fast L/Hand bowler, bowling first change winning his teams’ award for the 2 seasons he has played for our club. Capable fieldsman but must improve his batting next season if he still wants to become an opening batsman.

Chris MORELAND: 11 runs Ave 2.75. Great to see Chris back keeping again. His confidence grew over the season and he took some great catches in the last 4 matches. His figures of 8 catches for only 28 byes were excellent. See you next season mate.

BRETT BULLOCK: 203 runs Ave 22.6 16 wickets Ave 15.2 Rep Teams – Green & Watson Shield – Our opening bowler who loves terrorising opening batsmen snared Illawong’s top batsman for a duck in the final, which was the key to dismiss them so cheaply. A hard hitting batsman, and excellent fieldsman. Well done Brett.

MITCHELL DURIE: 42 runs Ave 14.00 15 wickets Ave 13.01 Mitch bowled first change with his consistent line and length he made scoring runs difficult. His pace increased during the season and with his mate “FRIDGE” will do well playing senior cricket next season.

Chris (FRIDGE) NELSON: 114 runs Ave 16.3 15 wickets Ave 12.86. Our opening bowler into the wind, he caused havoc to the Shire’s leading batsmen who could not handle his big curlers. A very intelligent bowler forever varying the pace of his deliveries. A big hitter of the ball when batting, and also had safe hands in slips.

Thanks also to : - Cameron Turner (14A) and Jonathon Ward (16B) for their support.

43 16B TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATTING AWARD: Chris Ward BOWLING AWARD: Stewart Lumsden TEAM PLAYER: Jonathon Ward MOST CONSISTENT: Stuart Dibb ALLROUNDER: Tim Russell

THE TEAM: - Sunil Patel (capt), Matthew Newman v/capt), Matthew Bryan, Stuart Dibb, Sam Dixon, Ben Judge, Stewart Lumsden, Ian Mitchell, Tim Russell, Mitchell Ryan, Chris Ward, Jonathon Ward.

When one looks at our final placing of 5th, in all honesty, it doesn’t truly reflect the achievements of this team. There was just six points between us and second place outlining not only the closeness of the competition but showing that we could’ve made the final if we hadn’t dropped games that we should’ve won. Every one of the players improved markedly not only as individuals but also as team players, one of the most pleasing aspects to come out of this season, especially from a coaches point of view. Leading by example was definitely our courageous captain Sunil Patel and the support from the players for Sunil and Matt Newman, both without captaincy experience before this year, was phenomenal.

This season had several highlights that I definitely won’t forget and not many of the players will either. Events such as Stuart Dibb’s and Mitch Ryan’s half-centuries in the very first round; rolling competition winners Illawong for just 87; Matt Bryan’s effort at the SCG; Sanjay giving the scorers out; the wells that were dug in Boystown against Gymea; and being told to “go back to the reactor” by our good mates from Sylvania, just to name a few.

Both coaches and all the players would like to thank our scorers, mainly Mahesh Patel for another year of spotless scoring, Peter Ward for his support in dealing with association rules and sympathizing with me in particular about “curious” umpiring, the parents for supporting the team and getting the guys up to the grounds early on Saturday mornings, Matthew “Warney” Carroll for his help with our leg- spinners at training, and finally the players themselves. Without the willingness to be taught and the desire to improve their games, it would’ve been a difficult year. But the manner in which the guys played their cricket was marvellous and made our first official year as coaches much easier. It was a great team to coach and we are proud to say that we coached the 16B’s from the Engadine Dragons in 2001/2002.

Mark

SUNIL “THE MAESTRO, TEXTBOOK” PATEL (CAPTAIN): 63 runs @ 6.30 Highest Score: 20 4 wickets @ 17 Best: 2 for 15 3 catches Sunil Patel is simply a pleasure to watch. Anywhere he bats, whether it be at training or in the game, his stroke making is simply elegant and straight from the coaches manual. Unfortunately, this natural talent wasn’t on show as long as it should’ve been this season. The occasions Sunil didn’t manage to get himself out , hit wicket or run out, he was great to watch every time. However, Sunil’s captaincy was without a doubt his greatest achievement this year. Without any prior experience, Sunil did the most fantastic job as skipper of the team, and was highly thought of by his fellow players. Sunil’s greatest strength as a captain was his optimism and his unrelenting encouragement and support for his team. Always willing to discuss tactics at training and in breaks; it was great working with Sunil. Without the burden of captaincy next year in his first year of mens, Sunny’s natural talent will definitely reap the rewards it deserves, with both bat and ball and it would be worth anyone turning up and watching “The Maestro” in full-flight.

MATTHEW “FROGGY” NEWMAN (VICE-CAPTAIN): 78 runs @ 9.75 Highest Score: 24 3 dismissals This season was definitely a turning point in Matt’s career. From here, with a little work, Matt will go onto to score many runs and take many dismissals. Matt is blessed with an incredible eye and it showed on several occasions this year including in round three when he guided us to victory against Illawong and when he gave our score some respectability in our last game to pose his career-best score and resisting the temptation to react to the oppositions “talking” to post his career best score. Along with his batting, Matt’s work behind the stumps, when given the chance, was truly excellent. His glove work was superb and should have the gloves on a more regular basis next year. Matt’s support for Sunny as vice-captain was fantastic and also has unearthed more captaincy talent in the Engadine ranks. Congratulations on your year Matt and, believe me that 50 is not too far away. 44

MATTHEW “MILO, MB” BRYAN: 29 runs @ 7.25 Highest Score: 11 4 wickets @ 25.25 Best: 1 for 0 4 catches What a year for Matt! At the start of the season, Matt had little confidence in himself. But by the end of the year he was a potent strike bowler creating awkward angles to the batsmen and was particularly lethal with the new ball. From this experience, Matt should take the new ball on a regular basis next year, and he should know that he can do it. Matt’s batting also improved beyond sight this year, and provided much-needed resistance down the order after one of our collapses. Matt is a very passionate cricketer, yelling and cheering for his team at any occasion. A great sense of humour and well respected by his players, this season will definitely lead “Milo” onto much greater things next year, with both bat and ball.

STUART “DUBB” DIBB: 166 runs @ 18.44 Highest Score: 53 9 dismissals Without a doubt our most consistent batsman, “Dubb” should be very pleased with his season from opener. Stuart is a very strong opening batsman, with excellent stroke-making abilities and almost every time seeing off the opening bowling and going on to post a respectable score. Stuart’s ‘keeping was superb this year, with near-flawless glove work, edges were always taken when they went to our ‘keeper. The team also had the pleasure of watching Dubb post his career best score in the first round of 53, an absolutely masterful display of skillful batting. A marvellous year for Stuart with both bat and gloves, Stuart should always concentrate on playing his natural game of grinding out an innings instead of being tempted to have a slog. Congratulations on the Most Consistent player award.

SAM “DICO” DIXON: 25 runs @ 6.25 Highest Score: 11* 14 wickets @ 18.71 Best: 3 for 21 6 catches Sam had a fantastic year sharing the new ball with Jono. “Dico” not only bowled with tremendous pace but he also bowled very tightly, and ended up bowling the most maidens in the team throughout the year. Sam’s fielding is also worth mentioning as it was always a safe catch with “Dico” under it and also saved many runs with sliding and diving saves in the infield and outfield. Sam’s batting this year was always interesting to watch and I hold on to the hope that he will one day bat like he does at training: without fear. Sam was as nervous as any top order batsman (which was great to see) and if he did manage to last a few balls, Sam could be counted on to give the tail a bit of a wag. One of the best trainers in the team, it was great to see Sam’s bowling go from strength to strength this year. Congratulations on a year to be proud of.

BEN “WINSTON” JUDGE: 158 runs @ 15.8 Highest Score: 42 7 wickets @ 33.71 Best: 3 for 13 5 catches A marvellous all-round year for Ben in his first year for the Dragons. After a slow start to the year, Ben found his form quickly and ended up being the 3rd top run-scorer in the team, with crisp, powerful hitting. “Winston” always put everything he had into his bowling, with that trademark grunt. When he controlled his pace, Ben destroyed any batting line up. If he can do that every time he bowls, Ben will be a strike force in any team he plays in. A great fielder and great “talker” in the field, Ben should be very proud of this season’s effort and will spur him onto bigger things next year as a senior member of the team.

STEWART “HARBHAJAN” LUMSDEN: 82 runs @ 13.67 Highest Score: 13.67 20 wickets @ 15.60 Best: 4 for 36 1 catch Stewart is a very talented bowler, possessing a lethal wrong-un. His bowling rarely was punished and could be brought on at any stage in the innings to break a partnership. His 20 wickets is a just reward for a superb year with the ball. The only thing Stew lacks is the ability to bowl a stock-ball in which batsman can never score off, but this is the only thing missing in Stew’s bowling arsenal. “Harbhajan” also showed talent with the willow on several occasions in the year and has the potential to become a consistent bowling all-rounder. In the lower order, Stew’s flawless defence and his ability to wait for the loose ball enabled him to post several respectable scores throughout the year. A great character in the team, Stewart is a well-deserved recipient of the bowling award. Congratulations Stew!

IAN “EEEN” MITCHELL: 130 runs @ 14.44 Highest Score: 41 11 wickets @ 16.18 Best: 4 for 51 4 catches Another player who should be very pleased with his all-round performance this year. On his day, Ian can totally destroy any team with both bat and ball. Ian is blessed with not only the ability to hit the cover off the ball but also play delicate strokes. His bowling has enormous natural turn and can bamboozle any batsman. His best bowling came bowling in tandem with Stew Lumsden where he and Stew took 8 wickets between them in the first innings, a great display of leg-spin bowling from both ends. However, Ian is way to hard on himself, which affected his game on some occasions. If Ian can learn to be more philosophical, his natural talent will reap even greater statistics than these. Adding to 45 this, Ian is an absolutely brilliant fielder. He didn’t take as many catches because it was of greater value to the team having him in the outfield. His sliding and diving sides were great to watch and honestly could’ve saved 10 to 20 runs every time he took the field. The catches Ian did take were typically rippers and not many others would’ve come close to taking them. Ian had a year to be proud of and should be the basis of some even better seasons to come in mens.

MITCHELL “MJ, ROCKY” RYAN: 148 runs @ 13.45 Highest Score: 58 2 wickets @ 51.50 Best: 1 for 11 7 catches Mitch is yet another player in the team blessed with natural talent. “MJ” has the ability to play strokes on both sides of the wicket and consistently took apart bowling attacks. Mitch had the honour of scoring the highest score this year in the first round with a marvellous 58, even then it is debatable whether he was out. Mitch had a terrible run this year with the umpires, and he really took it well. When given the chance, Mitch always scored heavily and quickly but always seemed to get out when he had just got himself in. In the slips, “Rocky” was flawless with arguably the safest hands in the team, taking as many catches as the ‘keeper this year. His bowling didn’t take the rewards it deserved, but he always bowled tight, having the second best runs per over at the end of the season. Mitch should be proud of his year in all aspects, and should be looking forward to scoring heaps of runs again next year.

TIM “HAL” RUSSELL: 152 runs @ 15.20 Highest Score: 43 17 wickets @ 12.71 Best: 4 for 7 5 catches A deserving winner of the all-rounder award. In almost every game, Tim took wickets or hit runs or both. Bowling first-change suited Tim better as it allowed him to utilize his natural swing and take many wickets either bowled or leg-before, and had the honour of taking our best bowling figures this year with 4 for 7 off 6 overs. Tim’s batting also outlines his status as a genuine all-rounder, cementing a spot this season in the top order. Tim, once he saw off his first couple of overs, very regularly notched up respectable scores, climaxing with a career-best 43 in round 5. Blessed with natural talent and an excellent cricketing brain, Tim should be extremely proud with his results this year and expect of himself to better them again next year. Maybe the only bit of advice for Tim is not to worry as much about what the umpires are doing and what the other team is doing. If he can concentrate on his own game when in the middle, much more success will come Tim’s way. Congratulations on the all-rounder award Tim!

CHRIS “WARDY” WARD: 185 runs @ 16.82 Highest Score: 42 3 catches Our most prolific run-scorer this year, few people can hit the ball harder than Wardy. The great thing about Chris’ batting is that he is genuine batsman and not a “slogger”. He combines hard hitting and stroke making beautifully and he was rewarded with the most runs in the team this year. From a coach’s point of year, Chris is great to work with. Always cooperative at training, and willing to do whatever was asked of him, Chris willingly put up his hand and took on the task of opening with much success, and it was greatly appreciated by everyone. His style is suited down the order about number four or five, but Chris is that good, he can score runs anywhere. Arguably Wardy’s only downfall is that he is too hard on himself when he plays and misses. If can forget little things like that (which everyone does) and concentrate on each ball as it comes, Chris will score even more runs. Also a fine fielder in any position, all congratulations should go to Wardy for the batting award.

JONATHON “JONO” WARD: 102 runs @ 12.75 Highest Score: 34 18 wickets @ 12.17 Best: 4 for 17 5 catches A true professional in all respects of the word (except without the money), Jono was always a pleasure to coach and a pleasure to watch him grace the cricket field with his talent. His bowling is much in the mould of Glenn McGrath, taking wickets not necessarily with shear pace but by not giving the batsman an inch. Very rarely did he bowl a loose ball and this is outlined not only by his average, but by his runs per over statistic of just 2.41, the lowest in the team. Jon’s presence was sorely missed due to a back injury midseason and who knows how many wickets he would’ve ended up with had he played the full season. Jono is also a promising middle to lower order batsman, occasionally hitting some good scores. If he can restrain himself a little more and not be tempted to smash every ball, Jon, in no time, will be classed as an all-rounder to be feared. He probably would’ve scored more runs if he had fixed that damn grip of his, which seemed to annoy me, more than him. Another excellent fielder with safe hands, it has been a great pleasure coaching Jon, as was the entire team, and we wish him the best of luck in the A’s next year.

46 16D TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Daniel Boyle BOWLER: Chris Jackson MOST IMPROVED: Dane Browne FIELDING AWARD: Dean Griffith ALLROUNDER: Daniel Boyle ALLROUNDER: Chris Jackson

THE TEAM: - Chris Jackson (capt), Daniel Boyle, Dane Brown, Tim Greenway, Dean Griffith, Andrew Hyde, David Ince, Sean Jones, Tim Jones, Rhys Mowlam, Cameron Stuart, Blake Woodley.

The U16D’s fielded a very strong side this year with nearly all the boys having played before. Unfortunately the boys didn’t make it to the finals this year but this was largely due to the fact that most of the other teams were second year U16’s and we still have another year in the juniors.

We started off the season superbly with a win and an outright win against two strong teams. The last two games of the season were exactly the same but whatever happened in the middle was a blur and we will only mention the highs. The boys produced plenty of highlights during the season and will give the competition a definite shake-up next season.

Robbie.

DEAN GRIFFITH: Deano has improved in all areas of the game this year scoring over 100 runs, taking 13 wickets and 8 catches to show his all-round value to the team. Even better than this, Dean went the whole season without any injuries. You must have learnt how to ride that thing mate. Dean is going to be a big asset to any team he plays for in the future and this year claims the fielding award for his safe hands in the field.

RHYS MOWLAM: Rhys had a good season with the gloves this year and improved every time he put them on. If he has the bat in his hands he is swinging at any opportunity and was often making people on the side- line jump for cover. We also had the advantage of Rhys behind the stumps sportingly encouraging the other teams batsmen when they looked a bit worried. Good season Rhys!

TIM GREENWAY: The Sandshoe Crusher is back. Unfortunately it was my sandshoe that got crushed whilst umpiring at square leg, as the boys know I am a fairly speedy character, but, when that ball was absolutely hammered in my direction, I couldn’t do much about it. Tim was returning from a few years out of cricket and he came back in style scoring over 120 runs, taking 7 catches and claiming a few wickets too. Well done, Crusher!

ANDREW HYDE: This was Hydies first season playing cricket and couldn’t have had a much better introduction to cricket than this season. He showed that he could bowl, bat and field very well without even breaking a sweat. Andrew claimed 10 wickets this year at an average of 7.8, which is awesome for a debut season. See you next year Hydie!

TIM JONES: Tim had another solid season this year and never stopped putting in 110% in everything he did. One example of this confidence was a windy morning down at Kingswood oval and the opposition batsman clocked one straight up in the air, it was up there for about twenty five minutes while Tim hovered under the ball. We won’t go on with details but he had to be rushed to the doctors with blood pouring out of mouth. Sorry Tim, I had to. Good season!

DANE BROWNE: Dane had a good season as we tried to wipe whatever Bosco he had left in him out. He was always there to lend a hand with the bat or the ball and featured strongly in our win against the competition favourites. His all round performance has claimed Dane the Most Improved award for season 2001/02. Good season Dane!

BLAKE WOODLEY: Blake had another good season with the bat and ball, but especially in the field. Opposition players are starting to learn not to run on Blake’s accurate rocket arm. Blake claimed 10 wickets this year as well, which cements his all round capabilities. Top season Blake, hope to see you next year.

47 DAVID INCE: David also put in 100% with anything that came to him. He was very unfortunate this year with a lot of the opening bowlers being twenty times better than they were last year. His fielding again was impeccable this season with not many balls getting past his stonewall defence. Top effort Dave!

CAMERON STUART: Cameron “monkey” Stuart was another valuable member of this years’ team with strong batting, bowling and fielding throughout the year. He had a very consistent season and we always knew that he’d be good for some runs. One individual performance was his maiden over against the number one team when they only needed three runs off 2 overs. Good season sideburns!

DANIEL BOYLE: Daniel belted out another unbelievable season with a top all-round performance, smashing records along the way. His safe batting got him 205 runs at an average of 18.64 and his cheeky swing bowling claimed him 21 wickets at an average of 10.57. Top this all off with awesome fielding and you had one of the best players in the competition. Top season Daniel, hope to see you next year!

CHRIS JACKSON: Chris was the captain for season 2001/02 and he led from the front with fantastic figures with the bat and ball. He scored 152 runs at 12.67 and took 20 wickets at 10.55 giving him a top all round performance this year. His captaincy was very well handled and all of the boys respected his leadership of the team. I know we’ll see Chris next year, good luck!

I would like to thank the parents for all of the time and effort that they have put into the team this year. Special thanks go to Ray Griffith (manager/umpire), Lyn Griffith (manager/scorer), Clint Boyle (umpire), the Jackson’s (chauffers) and last, but not least, the cheer squad. We would also like to see a return of the Trivia Night as we have been practicing for months.

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Greg Goodman BOWLER: Blake Cousemacker

THE TEAM: - Brett Johnson (Capt), Greg Goodman (V/Capt), Paul Cameron, Glen Cleary, Blake Cousemacker, Jason Crimlisk, Michael Friend, Greg Heffernan, Glenn Hickey, Greg Knowles, Drew Lake, Mark Lavender, Craig Parsons, Chris Pendergast, Michael Price, Ross Stuart.

We started the year full of optimism as we attempted to make it three premierships on the trot. Unfortunately, it was not to be. At seasons end it was clear that although we were good enough we did not as a team have the overall desire and commitment needed to reach our goal. We have the talent, all we have to do is regain the spirit to again challenge for the title. Our cause was not helped by the injury to two of our star players. Paul Cameron, opening bat, offspin bowler & the Shire’s best fieldsman (a self proclaimed title) only played the last couple of games. Craig Parsons, opening bowler, middle order bat and brilliant fieldsman, broke his arm whilst batting in the first round, we hope to see him back next season. We also lost our off-season recruit Glen Cleary after round one. He would have filled in nicely for Craig as an opening bowler. As a navy boy he was called to duty in the Middle East. I wonder if he got close enough to the action to give them a gob full?

As a result we were scrambling for players and with the A3’s in a similar position we had to recall Mick Price, Mark Lavender & Michael Friend out of retirement. We continued to struggle to field a side, as players were unavailable for a number of reasons. We then called on Chris Pendergast & Brett Bullock to ensure we had eleven on the paddock. Our thanks go out to these five players who really helped us out and they equipped themselves quite well despite their limited preparation. I’m sure the club would welcome you all as permanent fixtures next season. Outside factors also took their toll. Particularly following a mid season disagreement with the management committee. It certainly took its toll on myself, the team and was clearly a contributing factor in player’s attitudes and on field performances. Our council also saw fit to dig up the pitch mid game when we were poised for victory. The men’s association deemed the situation as unfortunate & awarded us 2 points for the draw. We then had a change of date for our Sun fixture, to a day when we had 8 players unavailable because of pre arranged 48 commitments or injury. 3 points out of a possible 12 did nothing to help our cause. On a positive note however they did allow us to do duty round one when we short of players.

Even allowing for the injuries, player unavailability and the outside factors referred to above we still could have scrambled into the final. We dropped a couple of games that we should have won in a canter. Not good enough from the defending premiers.

With greater resolve next season it is unlikely this will happen again.

Individually the following players had solid seasons: -

Batting Bowling Greg Goodman 286 runs @ 41 Blake Cousemacker 20 wickets @ 15 Brett Johnson 241 runs @ 27 Jason Crimlisk 17 wickets @ 12 Greg Heffernan 234 runs @ 21 Glen Hickey 17 wickets @ 18 Ross Stuart 232 runs @ 21 Ross Stuart 14 wickets @ 21

My sincere thanks go to Blake Cousemaker who put his hand up to help organise a team each week, not an easy job at the best of times. And to Greg Knowles who along with wicket keeping, bowling, sledging, & pinch hitting he filled the role of social & club liaison officer. His only blemish was not bringing his video player to the end of season trip away.

A final word of thanks to all the players who continue to support me both on and off the field. One of the best things about cricket is the opportunity it presents to build life long friendships. I reckon we have already achieved this!

Last season may have been a shocker in many ways but it was still bloody good to get out there and play cricket with your mates. I hope to see you all back next year and provided we can register 14 regular players we would do very well. What is certain however is that we will enjoy our cricket and a cold beer afterwards!

A3 TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Jay Davis BOWLER: Peter Johnson

RUNNERS UP

THE TEAM: - Stuart Slack (capt), Colin Berry (v/capt), Peter Coman, Adam Davis, Jay Davis, Peter Johnson, Beau Knowles, Chris Linley, Adam Phillips, Jason Radford, Troy Selvage.

Well we started this season with a full team but a quarter of the way through we only had nine players due to unforeseeable circumstances. We then had Jay Davis and Ryan Shepherd from the 16A’s to fill in when possible for the remainder of the season which was greatly appreciated given their heavy load as it was, also a special thanks to Michael Lavallee, James Gardner and Brett Bullock who also filled in throughout the season.

In total we went through 21 players with others filling in here and there. We made the final, which was a huge effort considering we hardly had the same team on the field two games in a row.

Jason Radford played his first season in senior cricket and did extremely well. He was the second highest wicket taker with 18 so he certainly didn’t let anyone down. Our bowling was certainly our strong point along with our fielding which was also very good. Our batting struggled throughout the season but we always managed a competitive score. The great thing about this team is we never gave up. There were matches we probably shouldn’t have won but to our credit we fought back and mainly the great bowling and fielding, when it mattered, we pulled through.

We played Gymea in the final who were heavy favourites. We batted first and scored 153, which was very defendable. At drinks on the second day we had them 5 for 69. The drinks break was where it all changed. Gymea’s opening batman played a tremendous innings of 76 not out to win them the match in the second last over. They got the target 6 wickets down. 49

Boys, things didn’t go our way during the season with supposedly drawn matches and ground changes, which cost us two victories, and to make the final was nothing short of OUTSTANDING!! Great effort boys!

STUART SLACK (CAPTAIN): Stuart just completed his 4th year of captaincy and making 3 finals with 1 win which is a very good effort at his young age. This season was disappointing in terms of batting for Stuart only scoring 136 runs still the equal highest run getter out of the team. Bowling wise he delivered, as he has done for the last few years taking 15 wickets at 15 and getting wickets at vital times was the key to his bowling this season. Stuart tries his best to make sure everyone in the team enjoys their cricket in one way or another. At the end of the day the team made the finals, which was a great effort in the A3’s. Look out A1’s. Well done Stu!

COLIN BERRY (VICE CAPTAIN): Colin (Darren) Berry had a terrific season as wicketkeeper taking 11 catches and 7 stumpings. His skill to stand up to the seamers was very impressive showing good hands and mobility. Colin was good support to Stuart through the season with some good suggestions and Stuart showing faith in the freaky gloveman. Cols batting was solid topping the averages with a few not outs. Well done Colin.

BEAU KNOWLES: This season along with last, Beau has been our strike bowler but only this year, I think Beau has really felt comfortable with that label as last year was his first in A grade and it took some time to find his feet. This was Beaus’ best season with the ball in quite a few years, his pace was in the Jeff Thompson category at times and his bounce would’ve shaken up the worlds’ best batsmen. His enthusiasm was also a huge boost for the team. Beau averaged 18 with the ball, which was a great effort, but his average could have been a lot better if luck was on his side, which it hasn’t been for the last 2 years. Well done big fella!!

PETER JOHNSON: Johno was a legend among team mates simply because of 1, the hattrick and 2, that great stutter as he comes in to bowl. This season Johno took 24 wickets at 10, which was remarkable for a spinner. Always on the spot, and always making the batsmen play, which this season Johno did consistently better than anyone. His hattrick was a great thrill simply because he had bowled crap all day in his 1st spell. His 2nd spell he came out and took 3 wickets in 3 balls, if anyone deserves a hattrick it’s Johno. Batting wise, the alcohol the night before took its toll on most occasions, though he did manage some good scores. His innings in the final was a great one in difficult conditions. Well done Johno.

CHRIS LINLEY: This season would be one that Jolly would rather forget after such a great year last year. The thing with Chris is he might not have been in the best of form but that didn’t affect his personality. Although he did manage some scores of 49 and a 33 which was very important towards the teams’ performance. He’s a top bloke to be around and always good for a laugh.

PETER COMAN: Peter was promoted to no. 4 early in the year due to some good performances previously and didn’t let anyone down. Peter scored 119 runs at average of 19. His fielding was a standout with some terrific saves and good catches under pressure. He was known for one particular comment (ticka) you’ll have to ask him about that. Well done Pete!

JASON RADFORD: This was Jason’s first season in men’s cricket and a good year it turned out to be. Jason was Beau’s opening partner with the new ball and really exceeded expectations taking 18 wickets at 15.6. Jason was solid in the field and a handy lower order batsman. He won’t like me saying that about his batting. Well done Jason.

TROY SELVAGE: Troy had a solid season with the bat although the best balls he faced probably came at training in the nets where he was hit a few times. Troy’s great strength was that he didn’t let a bowler get on top of him he was always looking to play his shots no matter what the circumstances were. Troy’s fielding was impressive and had a very strong throw from the outfield. Well done Troy.

ADAM PHILLIPS: Pixi was great company throughout the season and was always happy and excited despite the form slump he was enduring. Pixies best 2 innings of the season came at very important stages. He hit 22 runs against the S.U.S club, which took us to victory, and the all important 16 in the final. It may not seem many to some but it was worth around 40 to 50 considering the conditions, and again in this game pixi came in at a crucial time. His fielding was brilliant at times and he was always encouraging his team mates. Pixi can hold his head high there was a lot to come out of this season for him.

50 JAY DAVIS: Jay was brought into the side because of the short numbers at the start of the year. He was a blessing in disguise. His batting was that of a master, he certainly showed us all how it’s done. He opened the batting for us and did it well with some good scores. His leg spinners bamboozled the opposition, which created plenty of opportunities for wickets. He averaged 8.6 with the ball and 32 with the bat. Thanks Jay!

RYAN SHEPHERD: Shep played 5 games for us, again because we had short numbers. Shep showed signs of what he’s capable of. Ryan and Jay both played 16A’s in the morning so in the afternoon they were pretty tired. Ryan’s fielding was top class pulling off a brilliant runout at Woronora Heights and one that I will never forget as long as I live.

CAPTAIN – STUART SLACK

B3 TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Will Wooster BOWLER: Paul Waddell ALLROUNDER: Will Wooster

THE TEAM: - Will Wooster (capt), Paul Waddell (v/capt), Kevin Bryan, Bryce Cochrane, Lance Cochrane, Damien Collins, Michael Daly, Michael Green, Neil Kemmis, Allan Lofthouse, Darren Price, Graham Price, Daniel Slade, Matthew Whitney, William Ziegler.

With 4 first innings wins, 1 draw, 1 captains meeting, 2 duty rounds and 7 first innings losses, the B3’s finished the season on 51 points and finished in 5th place. However, had we won the last round we could have finished 3rd, if St. George Leagues lost, as it was we lost, so, it made no difference.

The teams played some good cricket at times, but were too inconsistent to maintain any pressure in the games we lost, therefore we were never really going to threaten the top teams and possibly reach the final.

We allowed the opposition to score more runs (2130) to (1698) took less wickets (130) to (93) then them, making the task that much more tougher. We did manage to defeat Illawong twice, Miranda Magpies once and eventual finalists Gymea Bay once. The other games were beyond our ability in this grade, which must be said, was about 3 grades too high for us. With the top 4 teams from the B5’s in 2000/01 promoted with us, where we finished 5th, the Association grading committee certainly got it wrong this season.

The batting, bowling and fielding at times were brilliant, where skipper Will Wooster, with 325 runs @ 29.54, 24 wickets @ 17.916 and 6 catches led by example, topping all 3 categories. He was backed up by Damien Collins with 255 @ 23.18, the only batsman to achieve over 200 runs and by Paul Waddell with 26 wickets @ 11.962, the only other bowler to surpass 20 wickets. If only the others could have been a bit more consistent, a couple of the losses may have been turned around.

Will’s 116 no in round 7 against Gymea Bay was the highlight of the season and Wally’s 6 for 19 in round 5 against Illawong, a close second.

Many thanks go to our trusty scorer Judy Lofthouse and also to Bob Price, who ably filled in as scorer when Judy was unavailable through work commitments. The team fully appreciates their efforts in this difficult task, especially this season with new rules coming in, but they coped admirably and got it right every time, Great work!!

If this team can stay together and be graded where they should be, then maybe 2002/03 can be a lot more successful. Roll on the winter so we can get back into a new season.

51 B6 TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Brett Adams BOWLER: Matthew Carroll

THE TEAM: - Brett Adams (capt), Mark Mitchell (v/capt), Greg Betts, Matthew Carroll, John Clark, Ben Cutler, Ashley Gurd, Sean Hall, David Howard, Dean Jones, Dane Logan, Ryan McLauchlan, Sanjay Patel, Matthew Russell, Ryan Simons.

It was another one of those seasons where we could’ve beaten the Australian team on one day and then lose to last-spot Illawong the next. Our final placing of 4th in the competition was respectable, but we promised to achieve much better than this. Regardless, it was a marvellous year with many memories that will stay with us all for a long time yet.

There were many positives to come out of this year. The most obvious is the dramatic improvement in Hubba’s tossing, winning half the tosses this year (compared to 3 last season). Adding to this, Matt Carroll’s destruction of batting line-ups consistently throughout the year, Matt Russell’s career-best season including a knock against the Seagulls that few who were there will forget, John and Pecks’ fielding competitions (in which Pecks won in the end), a ton, setting 320 in the very first round, Hub walking after his knick wasn’t heard because he was too tired (after that, we lost our last 6 wickets for 20 runs), Pecks’ idea for marketing the “fluffy box” and some umpiring by us against our own team that can only be classed as dubious.

Everyone should be very proud of their achievements not only as individuals but also as a team. This season has definitely paved the way for a much more successful year, if we can get a full 11 on the field at the game and at training, and definitely a couple more strike bowlers. I think I speak on behalf of everyone in the team in saying it was a pleasure to play cricket with this team and was one of the most enjoyable seasons yet.

Mark

BRETT “HUB” ADAMS: (captain) 202 runs @ 22 12 wickets @ 23.41 3 catches As mentioned earlier, Hub’s tossing was tremendous and when the toss usually decided the game for us (due to our inability to score over 100 runs batting second), his tossing form was definitely a major aspect to our wins this year. Adding to this, Hub’s batting was superb this year, climaxing with a career-best 88 against St. Pats in round 3. Hubba’s tremendous pace didn’t reap the rewards it deserves this year, but it can always be said that Hub kept the openers guessing as to whether a ball would pitch at square-leg or right on middle stump. Someone who can only be described as an inspirational leader (especially with the one-finger salute to the “pavilion” after getting the runs to give him the batting award), Hub has had a season to be proud of and a worthy winner of the batting award. It is always a pleasure and a lot of fun playing under Hubba and we look forward to doing it again next season.

Greg (Graham) “Pecks, Fluffy Box” Betts: 39 runs @ 4.8 0 wickets 3 catches Yet again, Pecks was unable to claim his first wicket of his career, but came ever so close (a coat of varnish in some cases). But his batting showed much improvement and looked like posting a few good scores this year but bore the full force of some dodgy umpiring (especially from our own guys) and some good balls. This year will no doubt lead Greg onto a tonne of runs. Pecks’ fielding was rather erratic this year, ranging from Ricky Ponting standard to Phil Tufnell standard, but did have the “honour” of claiming victory over John in their fielding competition. His idea for marketing the “fluffy box” was just brilliant but only Peck’s can really explain what it actually is…

MATTHEW “WARNEY, STRAWBERRY KISSES” CARROLL: 18 runs @ 3.6 27 wickets @ 14 3 catches What a year for Warney where became not just a hero, but a superhero of the B6 competition. His 27 wickets tell the story of how dominant Matt was over every team in the competition and was without a doubt a most lethal strike bowler this year. There are some people who would believe his poo is pure white and has no smell whatsoever and I would believe it. This year saw Warney develop an excellent wrong un’ and the “pigeon” which had most batsman in tangles. On the flip side, Matt’s batting was a touch less impressive but, to give him a fair go, Simmo didn’t help out much. But, with a bit more time in the middle, there is no reason why Warney won’t score a heap of runs to go with his heap of wickets. One of the highlights was seeing Warney bat with Pecks’. It was the uncanny thing…you could’ve 52 sworn they were father and son. A truly marvellous year and a pleasure to have in your team, all accolades for his bowling are thoroughly deserved.

JOHN “SHAFT MCGRATH, JC” CLARK: 21 runs @ 5.25 5 wickets @ 20 2 catches A quiet season for John but he always provided many laughs on and off the field. His bowling, on his day, caught many batsmen by surprise. Not exactly by shear pace but almost by a lack of it with a bit of swing to go with it. John could’ve achieved so much more this year but he never seemed to be comfortable out in the middle, but his natural ability with the bat will no doubt see “JC” score more runs next year, if the commitment is there too.

BEN “THE BAKER” CUTLER: 127 runs @ 31.5 0 wickets 0 catches Ben only played a handful of games this year but his aggregate of 127 runs at an average of 31.5 showed everyone that he can be a consistent run-scorer. With a superb half-century in the 5th round, Ben had a year to be proud of. But he could’ve been so much more if he had have been available. His bowling, as usual, was based on pure anger towards the poor bloke at the other end holding the willow. If he can manage to control his pace, Ben has the potential to destroy any batting line-up.

ASH (ADAM) “DRUG” GURD: 69 runs @ 10 0 wickets 2 catches On so many occasions this year, Ash looked liked posting some big scores this year but always managed to get himself out just as he had got himself in. His results this year don’t reflect Ash’s natural talent and, with a bit of luck and without injuries, Ash will score plenty of runs next year. Ash didn’t get the opportunities his bowling talent deserved this season, but when he did get the chance, the batsman were literally packing it. A fine fielder with safe hands and a pleasure to have in your team.

SEAN “SKIP” HALL: 166 runs @ 16.6 7 wickets @ 32 4 catches The most devastating batsman you will ever see. If Sean gets his eye in, the leather was dispatched to all parts of the ground. However, Sean would somehow always find a way to get himself out just he had got a start. Just a touch of patience is all Sean needs to post big scores frequently. Due a shin-splint injury, Sean’s bowling wasn’t as potent as it usually is, but, on occasions, Sean’s bowling did show glimpses of what his natural ability can do. Without a doubt our safest hands, especially in the outfield, Skip’s statistics this year are only a fraction of what he is capable of. An injury-free 2002/2003 for Sean will spell trouble for any opposition.

DEAN “DJ, DEANO” JONES: 95 runs @ 15 11 wickets @ 17 6 catches Much like Sean, Deano is one of the most naturally gifted sportsmen you will ever come across. When he bats, Deano can combine stroke making with swashbuckling hitting to an art form. His part-time bowling is always spot-on and the return of 11 wickets @ 17 is justice to his all-round ability. However, as it has been with a few of us this year, Dean seemed to be walking back to the pavilion just after getting a start. With a little luck and maybe some patience, Dean can win a game with either bat or ball. A superb fielder in any position and great bloke to have in your team.

DANE “HUB JUNIOR” LOGAN: 70 runs @ 7.7 0 wickets 2 catches Yet another one of our players not achieving the results that truly reflect his talent. Dane is very graceful top order batsman having a full arsenal of hard hitting shots as well as beautiful drives and cuts. But just when he got a start, we would get dismissed. Like many of our other batsman, a little luck and patience will see Dane return to scoring a pile of runs. When given the chance with the ball, Dane always troubled batsman with his mixture of pace and turn but was unable to capture any scalps this year. A safe pair of hands and an excellent ground fielder, Dane should be looking forward to having a much more successful season next year.

RYAN “BIG MAC” MACLAUCHLAN: 9 runs @ 4.5 0 wickets 2 catches Had a shocking run with injuries this year, and was only able to play three games this year. Even then, he was severely hampered and his batting wasn’t as fluent as it usually is. His keeping, was near flawless and was able to snare 2 dismissals. Fingers crossed for Macca that his knee will hold up and that we can return to consistently scoring runs for the team. A great scorer and a great bloke, it is always a pleasure to have “the two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun” in your team.

53 SANJAY “STINGE, PANTHER, LAZIEST 16 YEAR OLD EVER” PATEL: 198 runs @ 19.8 7 wickets @ 39.42 3 catches Another top year for Sanjay who has put 3 back-to-back years together of high scoring. Like his brother, Sanjay’s game is based on pure elegance and just great to watch from the other end. Few will forget his innings at Oyster Bay this year where he was so angry that he took it all out on the bowlers and ended up scoring 33 not out of the teams total of 53. I also had the pleasure of sharing a 99-run opening partnership with him against St.Pats (why couldn’t you just stay in for one more run??!!). His bowling this year was a tad wayward as he had trouble controlling the huge swing he was generating. With he swing under control, Stinge would be that extra strike bowler we need. Another marvellous fielder with a safe pair of hands and superb arm, “Panther” should be proud of his results this season and I look forward to opening the innings again next season with Stinge.

MATT “THE MUSCLE, RUSS” RUSSELL: 171 runs @ 29 7 wickets @ 20.2 4 catches This season was without a doubt a huge turning point in Matt’s cricketing career. This was his best ever year and it was great to watch him succeed to such an extent this season. His batting, brought on by a new mental toughness (maybe from refereeing?), was superb and his gritty innings against the Seagulls (and their sledging) will not be forgotten any time soon. The fact that the Seagulls resorted to sledging a 16-year-old in his first year of Men’s cricket is a fine example of his determination and batting talent. He also managed to score an unbeaten 48 this year, his career best score. Along with batting, his bowling and fielding was magnificent this season. “Russ” was usually brought on to break up partnerships and he did that time and time again. One of our best talkers in the field and a great person to have in your team. Congratulations on a season to be proud of Matt, that first half-century is not too far down the track.

RYAN “SIMMO” SIMONS: 40 runs @ 5 2 wickets @ 19 5 catches Also in his first year of Men’s, Simmo also had a year to be pleased with. His bowling (while only given limited opportunities) reaped some rewards and should be a lethal part of any team’s attack next season. His unique batting style was always great to watch, especially his trademark one-legged shot over mid-on. His running between wickets always kept everyone on edge, especially Warney. His many efforts with Warney down the order this year were always a comedy of errors and provided many laughs for us this season. His 40 runs do show he can stay in there and provide some resistance to give the tail a bit of a wag. Ryan is blessed with some incredibly safe hands, taking some absolute beauties in the in and outfield. And when Simmo did manage to say something in the field, it was always top- notch. Simmo also a very bright future as an umpire, just ask Pecks!

MARK “BIG RED” MITCHELL (VICE-CAPTAIN): 198 runs @ 22 2 wickets @ 24 14 dismissals I hit a ton, took a few dismissals, and kept my record of claiming a wicket every time I bowl in tact. Apologies for my lack of consistency and for my lack of self-control when it came to umpires. I will try and fix them next year, I promise.

See you next year, that premiership isn’t too far away.

54 C1 TEAM REPORT

AWARD WINNERS - BATSMAN: Peter O’Rielly BOWLER: Ron Shepherd ALL ROUNDER: Peter O’Rielly ALL ROUNDER: Ron Shepherd

THE TEAM: - Ed Bullock (capt), Nathan Baggeler, Clive Beardow, Greg Faul, Jeff Fiess, Matthew Healey, Robbie Knight, Jackson Mall, Jason O’Rielly, Peter O’Rielly, Gavin Scott, Ron Shepherd, Tod Skevington, Ross Small, Brendan Smith.

After a horror start to the season, stripped of 22 points and then losing the next 4 matches, the team came back remarkably well, to be in contention for the final in our last game. At no stage in the competition did any of these gentlemen ever give up, which made captaining this side very pleasurable.

One of the best things in this competition was the improvement of two young blokes, Brendan Smith and Matt Healy. Brendan, whose fielding was 500% on last comps and caught a couple of screamers in the outfield, and Matt, who couldn’t get a ball on the pitch his first year, came out and got 10 wickets, nearly all bowled with 4 in one innings. Well done, fellas.

Also Robbie Knight, who helped organise things behind the scenes. I know Robbie will come back better than ever after having a tough year by his standards.

BOWLING awards went right down to the 2nd innings of the last match with Jeff (Cyclops) Fiess 18, Gavvy (was that a wrong’un) Scott 20, Pete (Mr. Sheffield) O’Rielly 21 and our winner Rotten Ronnie Shepherd with 24 wickets @ 12. Well done, Ronnie Rotten.

BATTING was again our failure in the close matches with the exception of Gavvy 174, Rotten Ronnie 275, Jason (Jackass) O’Rielly 300 and old Mr. Sheffield taking it out with 345 runs @ 31. Also a very good 109 in there, great stuff Pete.

To the rest of the team, Greg (big gronka) Faul, Jackson (I’ll have a red) Mall, Hot Toddy Skevington and Clive (hope gronks brought the esky) Beardow, I thank youse all for a very enjoyable season and want you blokes back to get the jacket that I know we can win with a bit more luck than this years farce.

On behalf of the team I also would like to thank Engadine Dragons C.C. Committee, who put a hell of a lot of personal time in to run this great club from six’s to sixty’s just so we can throw our balls about a bit.

Six Ducks.
