We have been competitive, from our 10Es through to our senior A1s, and on balance it cannot be said that we have had a bad year. The A3 senior team made the final and though not winning can at least claim the title of “Runners-up”. Of our junior teams the 16A, 14E and 10A made it through to the final and the first two achieved premiership status. To all teams, not only those I have mentioned but also to all others, I say “well done”. Cricket is not just a matter of winning there’s more to it than that. It is a team sport where success can be measured by effort, comradeship, sportsmanship, commitment and, fair play. It is far, far better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all. Old words but true. Although we slipped from first to fifth in the SSJCA Junior Championship we are one of the larger clubs and sometimes fortune does not always favour us in gradings. Those are the times when we need to try harder. The demands on those responsible for managing the affairs of all sporting clubs continue to increase. In the past few years we have seen our game go from a simple Saturday sport to one now governed more and more by the need to address a plethora of requirements. Increasing incidents of insurance claims and court cases arising out of perceived lack of duty of care have demanded a parallel increase in the demand for responsible management by club officials. This in part has lead to the essential introduction of coaching accreditation. It has lead to increased awareness on what we do and how we do it. Community concerns relating to pedophiles has seen the emergence of “Working with children” legislation. Recently attention has been focused on Privacy legislation. And so the demands and level of responsibility increase. I am proud to say that our club management team has responded to these challenges positively and effectively. Lead by Club Secretary, Ian Latham, the committee has addressed all these matters and we have systems in place that permit all our players especially our junior ones to participate in cricket with a degree of confidence in the efforts taken to safeguard their welfare. The well being of the club relies on all working together. This year we saw a disappointing response to the raffle and such was the interest shown in the Trivia night that we cancelled it. Through the loss of these two activities our income for the year has been reduced by something like two thousand dollars. Consequently we are becoming more and more reliant on sponsorship funding and this creates an imbalance in budget planning. For years our primary fiscal policy has been to keep fees at a minimum. Our secondary aim has been based on support for activities plus sponsorship. Together, these two items are the tools to provide not only supplementary funds to run a season but additional monies to allow for forward planning, development programs, equipment upgrades, and training facilities. So, the loss this year of two thousand dollars in income while not crippling in itself does impact on long term planning. Whilst I am not advocating an increase in fees I am urging greater support in our fund raising activities. We need greater involvement from all, not just a few. All too often the great majority mean well but forget to follow through. I ask that next year you give us the support we deserve. Nevertheless all is not gloom and doom. The acquisition of a bowling machine was achieved this year through the astuteness and business skill of our Secretary (Ian Latham) who managed to secure a federal grant for this purpose. Had it not been for his work this valuable piece of training equipment would still be a dream. This is my last report. I am retiring from all cricket activities. Since I first joined the Dragons in 1983 I have seen a lot of cricket. I am pleased to be able to say that in this period I have always played with a straight bat and expected others to do likewise. Apart from my long involvement with the Club, I have had the privilege of serving three years on the executive of the Sutherland Shire Cricket Umpires Association and five years on the executive of the Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association. In all I have had many enjoyable experiences. It has been a great 18 years but the time has come to say ”Enough!” It is time for a younger person to take over. As an Engadine Dragons Cricket Club Life Member, an honour of which I am quite proud, I will continue to be around and if I can assist gladly give my help. Cricket is a great sport. I believe passionately that for little kids it is a great character builder and it teaches values of teamwork, commitment, honesty, and sportsmanship. A great poet once wrote, “and it’s not for the sake of a ribboned coat, Or the selfish hope of a season’s fame, but the Captain’s hand on his shoulder smote – Play up! Play up! And play the game! “ Though those words were written some hundred years ago the spirit of the game lives on and still today we can give the game no greater effort than to play it honourably and hard. Devoid of language, sledging and selfishness, we can lift the Club to greater heights if we all, from the youngest under ten player to our oldest Senior A1 player, “Play up! Play up and play the game!” God Luck to all future generations of Engadine Dragon cricketers. Russ Waddell 4 SECRETARY’S REPORT The 2001/2002 season saw another drop in junior player numbers across the Association, the Dragons were also affected by the down turn, registering six fewer players. As a result many sides had bare numbers and our 10E team had to play one short the entire season. We again fielded eleven teams made up of 122 players. In the senior ranks our numbers stayed pretty consistent with 80 registrations, two fewer than last season. We again fielded five teams. On the field we had a mixed season in the juniors with a number of teams suffering from over grading. Our under twelve’s and fourteens were the most effected, and this was mainly due to these sides containing a large percentage of first year players in these respective age groups. The upbeat of this is that these same players will have gained a great deal of experience at this higher level and should be well placed to reap the benefits next season. Our senior sides were consistent across the board and their performances and placing on the point score table vindicate the gradings they received. Unfortunately a number of side’s results and standings were affected by the management of the competition, and not by their efforts on the field. We again figured strongly in the Final’s Series with three junior, and one senior side contesting the final. Congratulations go to our Premiers, the 16A (Minor Premiers) and 14E teams. Commiserations to our runners up, the A3 and 10A sides. Special mention must be made of the extraordinary season the 14E’s have had, losing their first four matches they went on to win the next seven straight to win the title. Well done to Rob Lowe and all the boys on their great achievement. After winning the Club Championship last season we came back down to earth with a bang finishing in fifth place.
