George Strait is one of the leading proponents of a traditional country music that is styled with Texas swing, delivering his music with a rich, no frills voice and a straight-ahead delivery. PURE COUNTRY is the soundtrack to Strait's film debut, offering a variety of swinging shuffles, traditional honky tonk, weepy ballads and country rockers. He wears his influences proudly, and having been doing it so well for so long, he has, in turn, become a major influence on the next generation of new traditionalists. One can clearly hear Merle Haggard, Bob Wills and George Jones in his music; but give a listen to new guys like Clay Walker, and you'll hear a distinctive George Strait influence. Riding a flat-bed of fiddle, pedal steel and genuinely heartfelt vocals, Strait takes the listener on a tour of the country singer's world. On the uptempo "Heartland," George explains that to "sing a song about the heartland" is to "sing a song about my life." The album's hit, "I Cross My Heart," is a strong love ballad co-written by one of Nashville's best current songwriters, Eric Kaz. A gentle fiddle leads the listener into the cry-in- your-beer classic "When Did You Stop Loving Me," and before long the fiddle is weeping alongside George. Strait cuts loose on several songs, but its the trademark hard country tracks like Mel Tillis' "Thoughts Of A Fool" that work best. Jim Lauderdale provides the strongest and most traditional sounding material (particularly "King Of Broken Hearts"), yet both of his songs have clever, modern musical twists.     2011 Induction Class Steve Wariner Steve Wariner was born on December 25, 1954, in Noblesville, Indiana. At a young age, he was influenced by George Jones and Chet Atkins. He began performing with father, Roy Wariner, on local radio and television programs. He later performed in local clubs, and by 17, he was hired as a bass guitarist for Dottie West. He also spent some time working with Glen Campbell who was another big influence. Next he toured with Bob Luman as the bass player. In 1976, while touring with Luman, he was signed to RCA records by Chet Atkins His self-titled debut album spurred his first top 40 hits including “Your Memory,” “By Now” and “All Roads Lead To You,” which reached #1 in 1981. Wariner released two more albums before signing with MCA Records in 1984.His first single for the new label, “What I Didn’t Do”, made the country Top Five and in early 1985, setting off a string of 18 consecutive Top Ten hits that included the chart-toppers “Some Fools Never Learn”, “You Can Dream of Me”, “Life’s Highway”, “Lynda”, and “The Weekend”. Wariner recorded three more albums for MCA, when in 1991 Wariner signed with Artista Records and released I Am Ready, which was the first to be Certified Gold. His first three singles, “Leave Him Out of This”, “The Tips of My Fingers”, and “A Woman Loves” were all top ten hits. Though these songs are written two decades apart, both country tunes showcase the identity concepts of pain and family through the symbol of “storms.” The country genre is one of the most notorious for discussing pain as well as family ties. These two concepts are also key identity topics discussed in Steph Lawler’s book Identity: Sociological Perspectives, a reference that will be used throughout this analysis. As Webb Pierce stated, in country music “you sing about the things that people think about most, but don’t talk about” (Fox 56). Carrie Underwood’s emotional tune is about a daughter and an abusive, alcoholic father, while Brooks discusses the pain of a wife and cheating husband, but both are expressing the pain caused and the family, or lack of, ties that go with that feeling of loss.
