losing the path of stairs which ran from the ninth-level bus-stop along the south side ofthe university was a risk-management situation. That's the official C word. Students and staff alike used this path to access the eighth and seventh-levels. In addition to being a time-saving bee-line, the path provided an efficient route for trans porting works of art which, for a variety of reasons, were difficult to maneuver up the main staircase. "The reason why the path was removed now and not before is there have been more incidents surrounding the path—people falling and getting hurt, so we had to rectify the existing liability to the university and remove the path," commented Brian Sullivan, associate director of the physical plant. Until now, the path provided an access route to the Art and English departments on eighth-level, as well as to the seventh-level music department. "Art students at the University of Lethbridge, unfortunately, do not have proper access to the department. The entire area was improperly designed in the first place. It was based more on aesthetics instead of practicality. We are one of the only art depart ments without proper loading and unloading facilities," commented Carl Granzow. associate dean of Fine Arts. A possible solution to the problem is the creation of a proper loading dock with the arrival of the new library. "They have to think of something for when the new library is built. Trying to get in here will be even more difficult," said Granzow. At present, there are no plans to replace the path; however, arrangements are being made to use the freight elevator from fourth-level to transport large pieces of art and materials. For more information, please contact Carl Granzow in the Art department.

X-Man William B. Davis gives university lecture By Rob Brown

illiam B. Davis, a.k.a. Cigarette Smoking Man, a.k.a. Caneer Man, a.k.a. Blaek Lunged Sonofabitch, took to the stage Mareh 3rd and provided thc eager crowd with a 90 minute W speech that was part tonguc-in-chcek, and part down-to-earth seriousness. Davis was a philosophy major at the University of Toronto, and he was involved with thc Theatre School of Canada before moving onto producing radio plays and establishing thc William B. Davis Center of Acting. He played thc part of thc University of Lethbridge's Showcase Speaker well, with a speech containing three points of interest. Moving from narrow points to broad references, Davis was amazingly affable as he began thc 1999 Showcase Speech with a comparison between his character, CSM, and special agent Fox Mulder. "What do these two characters want?" was the question posed by Davis. "Panic arises from Fox Mulder getting what he wants, and he wants the truth. If CSM gets what he wants, then nothing shall happen." It was clear from this first example by Davis just where he was going in the first section of his discussion. Davis gave examples strengthening his "pro-CSM" argument. Davis explained that Mulder has not sacri ficed enough by simply doing what he wants as head ofthe X-Files. CSM has sacrificed both his wife and son. CSM is clearly a better character than special agent Fox Mulder. Heading number three was titled "Love." Once again, the winner is clear, for Mulder simply saves Scully, and that is his job. They're part ners. CSM saves Mr. Mulder and "in turn, risks his job with thc syndicate" stated Davis. "Who would you choose as a leader?" asked Davis. "Mulder is young and impetuous," and prone to "fly[ingl off the handle," and he is always "drawing his gun." Photo by Piotr Filpnk "CSM is calm, collected and thoughtful" added Davis. "He delegates work." This is the case for CSM over Fox Mulder. Without a doubt, it is tongue-in-cheek, and perhaps a bit over the top, but Davis makes a good point. "What is paranormal?" Davis later asked. "Loch Ness is not paranormal, even if believable," he answered. "Aliens are not out of the range of possible. But they're not paranormal" Davis added. "When you get into things like PSl Factor, then you're into the paranormal" said Davis. Davis then took his talk into more of a cerebral setting. He talked of Philip Klaas, who tracks down all sightings. It is through Klaas that Davis let his own thoughts on the subject come out: "aliens are not among us." Davis made the point that the X-Files questions if things exist, thus generating the question, "is there reality at all? Have we been living in the illusion of that what we see is simply there?" Through this, Davis came to the inevitable question: "Why is X-Files so popular?" It resonates with audience and viewers. Davis left this quickly and moved back to the scientific. "Human beings are an accident" he stated. "Humans are terrible animals, we're slow" said Davis. "Only our brains evolved." Davis then took to the past, and offered up a brief explanation about why Shakespeare was pop ular: "He was on the cusp of change; the illiterate were trying to become literate. As we become literate we become separate. We gain the ability to manipulate." 1* place $3000 "The truth is out there, but how do you get at it?" he asked. "The X-Files simply asks, what if? 2nd place $2000 It doesn't tell us anything. It tells us about ourselves-what we were, what we are, and where we 3rd place $1000 will be." With this, the talk of William B. Davis ended, and the audience questions came. A VHS video commercial Davis plans to do feature films, Canadian based projects, and direct theater and stage work up to 60 seconds about triGRock beer when the X-Files has its final run. The 1999 Showcase Speaker held-up the standard set by the likes of Suzuki, Goodall and Deadline for Entries is 5pm April 9, 1999 Bondar. William B. Davis brought a little bit of everything to his talk on March 3rd. Those who QUioljtL eonU&to uUel atui- c*U*y fov^A- available ttf> missed this boat missed a big boat. "Radhe, Radhe." The track ha.s an excellent, catchy beat and is the best song on the album. The STAR TREK - INSURRECTION (PG) 102 min. 1:20; song shows Bob E/rin's (Pink Floyd, Kiss, Lou Reed) influence. 4:05; 6:55; 9:30 The 9th and perhaps BEST Star Trek movie to "108 Battles" has the band continuing strong, at least musically; however, the lyrics in this song date. lack in comparison to the last song's lyrics. "108 Battles" is an example ofa band that grinds THE FACULTY (14A) 101 min. 9:40 Co.rM Languaga and Gory through sparse material. "Sound of Drums" is a brief interlude of Doors-like material and good gui violence Science Fiction thriller. "Thrills, Chills & Non-Stop Entertainment." SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE (PG) 94 min. 1:30; 4:15; tar work, as it favorably accentuates the centerpiece ofthe album: "Timeworm". 6:45; 9:45 Sarah Michelle Gellar & Sean Patnck Flanery star in this "Timeworm" has the band mixing Eastern and Western music well, and although I do not think it contemporary love story. is the best song of the album, il is the most adventurous track. I believe that "Shower Your Love" IN DREAMS (14A) 98 min. 1:25; 4:10; 7:00; 9:35 has the legs to be good single, while the album (and perhaps the band) shall be remembered for vioianca & Gruesome Scenes Annette Bening, Aidan Quinn & Robert Downey "Timeworm". Jr. star in this psychological thriller. "Last Farewell" allows Jay Darlington to show off some great organ work, with Crispian Mills playing off well and responding with his guilar playing. Paul Winlerhart's drumming sets the tone for ihe song. "Last Farewell" has the band playing with balance, and it works well. "Golden Avatar" is as close as the band gets to letting loose. It's a rollicking, sliding rocker. I simply have one character to say about 12th track, "Namami-Nanda-Nandana," and that is: ?. It's Call 381-MILL 1710-MAYOR MAGRATH DRIVE SOUTH a mysterious, puzzling track that leaves me thinking about a number ol things, but none of them has http://www.moviemill.com to i\o with the song. page 14 - The Meliorist, thursday march 11, 1999
