The first reported back that the situation was hopeless as no one wore shoes. The other returned excited with the message that the opportunities for them were enormous because the locals did not yet have any shoes. So is the question today: what opportunities does Africa offer? A profound change has taken hold in Africa, with a fast emerging middle class. According to the World Bank, 600m people in Africa earn an income of US$3,000 a year. This number is estimated to reach 100m in 2015 (the Economist December 3rd 2011). In June 2010, the McKinsey Institute published a report, entitled, “Lions on the Move: The progress and potential of African economies”, in which it asserts that long–term growth in Africa will be the outcomes of social and demographic trends, particularly the growing labour force, urbanization and the rise of the middle class consumers.
