VLAC TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT AND ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT

VLAC Technology and Internet Equipment Internet Access and Technology Equipment Oakland Schools shall provide each student with the option of receiving Internet access at the student’s home, a , printer, and a (if not already built into the computer) to access the Virtual Learning Academy Consortium (“VLAC”) program curriculum and complete the student’s coursework under the VLAC program. Oakland Schools is the legal title owner of all technology equipment issued to a student participating in VLAC unless purchased by the parent/legal guardian. Parents/legal guardians may opt to have their student use their , printer, webcam, or Internet service (provided that such computer or printer meets certain technological requirements as determined by Oakland Schools). For purposes of this VLAC Technology and Internet Acceptable Use Agreement that will be referred to as Agreement throughout this , computer means an electronic device, including but not limited to, a desktop, laptop, notebook, or , issued to a student in connection with the VLAC program. The computer, printer, webcam and Internet service provided shall be determined at the sole discretion of Oakland Schools. After a student has completed one full year of the VLAC program, the computer and/or printer may be purchased. The sale price of VLAC and printers shall be calculated using a Straight Line Depreciation Method with a 10% of purchase price salvage value and a four year depreciation/useful life (Purchase Price – Salvage Value/Years of Estimated Life = Depreciation Value or Sale Price). Lost, Stolen or Damaged Computer, Printer or Webcam Students are responsible for the safeguarding of technology equipment issued by Oakland Schools. In the event a computer, printer or webcam is damaged, lost or stolen due to the gross negligence of the student or parent/legal guardian, the parent/legal guardian shall be responsible to pay to Oakland Schools the full cost of the replacement value of the computer, printer or webcam. For purposes of this Agreement, gross negligence shall be defined as engaging in conduct so reckless as to demonstrate a substantial lack of concern for whether damage is caused. If the computer, printer or webcam is lost or stolen, the parent/legal guardian shall immediately notify the Oakland Schools Technology Services Department at 248.209.2060 and file a police report. If the computer, printer or webcam is damaged, the parent/legal guardian shall immediately notify the Oakland Schools Technology Services Department at 248.209.2060. Internet and Computer Security Measures Oakland Schools is subject to the Children’s Internet Protection Act (“CIPA”), as amended, requiring Oakland Schools to implement Internet filters and other security measures for all computers and Internet services provided by Oakland Schools. The Internet filters and security measures are designed to prevent access to materials inappropriate for students on the Internet and to monitor online activities of students. Students and parents/legal guardians who use Internet services or computers provided by Oakland Schools must comply with the Oakland Schools Board of Policy 4520 – Children’s Internet Protection Policy.

Student Technology Code of Conduct and Rules for Technology Use

1. I (We) acknowledge my student has no expectation of privacy (i.e. , data on computer, Internet use, etc.). I understand that my student’s use of Oakland Schools’ technology can be monitored electronically by designated Oakland Schools’ staff at any time and without notice.

2. I (We) understand in order for Oakland Schools to ensure that the technology equipment is being used responsibly, Oakland Schools reserves the right to inspect any and all data, including data stored by my student on the Oakland Schools’ computer.

3. I (We) understand that communications on the Internet are public in nature and I (we) will be careful to maintain appropriate and responsible communications.

4. I (We) understand Oakland Schools cannot guarantee the privacy, security, or confidentiality of any information sent or received, either via the Internet, an email or otherwise.

5. I (We) agree my student will not store personal or private information on the computer.

6. I (We) agree my student will not attempt to log into the Calvert website using any login or password other than the login or password assigned to my student and my student will not share their password with any other individual or allow another individual to use their login or password.

7. I (We) agree my student will adhere to Board policies, administrative rules, and guidelines as well as all applicable laws and regulations governing copyright of software and Internet content.

8. I (We) agree my student will not use “pirated” or otherwise illegally obtained computer software for use on Oakland Schools’ technology, whether for instructional, administrative, or any other purpose.

9. I (We) agree my student will not modify the existing hardware setup of any Oakland Schools technology.

10. I (We) agree my student will not engage in cyberbullying or other unlawful or inappropriate activities using a computer.

11. I (We) agree that the primary purpose of the technology is for participation in VLAC.

Illustrative Examples of Inappropriate Use of Technology

The following are illustrative of, but not exhaustive of, inappropriate use of technology that violates Oakland Schools’ policy, administrative rules or this Agreement:

 Using technology to harass, intimidate, threaten, embarrass or cyberbully others.

 Sending, displaying, or downloading offensive messages or pictures or accessing pornographic material.

 Use of profanity or inappropriate language.

 Attempting to bypass the Internet filter to access websites that have been blocked.

 Violating copyright, trademark, trade secrets or licensing agreements.

 Use of any technology resource for political activity except in accordance with applicable law, soliciting or fund raising for personal causes not related to and approved by the Program Administrator, or engaging in a personal business or business activity.

 Illegal activities of any type.

Oakland Schools may at any time make determinations that particular uses of the technology and Internet services are or are not consistent with the goals of Oakland Schools.

Failure to abide by this Agreement could result in the immediate removal of Internet access and technology equipment provided by Oakland Schools. This could result in the student’s removal from the Program if the parent or legal guardian cannot provide a computer, printer, webcam and/or Internet access for continued use of the Calvert curriculum and related online resources. Technology and Internet Acceptable Use Policy Signature Page I (We), the undersigned parent/legal guardian of, ______, have read and thoroughly discussed with my (our) student the VLAC Technology and Internet Equipment and Acceptable Use Agreement, the terms and conditions of which are incorporated herein by reference, and agree to the terms and conditions as stated. By executing this Agreement, I (we) expressly agree to be responsible for my (our) student’s use of technology in conformance with the Technology Code of Ethics and Rules for Technology Use, and to assume all responsibility for any liability associated with his/her use of the technology. I (We) further understand and agree that Oakland Schools assumes no responsibility for the student’s or my (our) use of the technology. I understand that violating these rules may result in the loss of using the technology by my student and that disciplinary action may result which may lead to removal from VLAC.
