MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

The 11th edition of the Toronto Global Forum will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most successful events that the International Economic Forum of the Americas has ever hosted. More than 170 speakers and more than 3,000 participants shared key insights about the global economy and engaged in high-level networking over three days. During that time, the Toronto Global Forum brought together senior business executives, government representatives, academics and members of the civil society from more than 65 countries.

I would like to thank our speakers, who came from near and far, for accepting our invitation to share their invaluable insights on the current and future challenges facing the global economy in these rapidly changing times.

This success would not have been possible without the unconditional support of our partners and sponsors, in particular, our Presenting Partner, Cogeco Peer 1 and our Strategic Partners, BNP Paribas, DBRS, Aecon and Cummins. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Ontario Government for its remarkable partnership in creating the Ontario 150 Canadian Expat Program, a novel initiative that leveraged the global experience of Canada’s diaspora and shared it with Ontario SMEs, young entrepreneurs, and students. Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge the long standing support of the City of Toronto that, it should be noted, first encouraged us 11 years ago to bring the Forum to Toronto.

As 2018 draws near, we look forward to welcoming you to the next editions of our annual events: the 8th edition of the in Miami, on April 16 - 17, 2018; the 24th edition of the Conference of , on June 10 - 14, 2018; the 2nd edition of the Conference of Paris in autumn of 2018; and the Toronto Global Forum, which will be held on December 10 - 12, 2018.

On behalf of all of us at the International Economic Forum of the Americas, thank you for your participation and support.

Nicholas Rémillard President and Chief Executive Officer, International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA)

THE INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM OF THE AMERICAS AND THE TORONTO GLOBAL FORUM

The International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA) is dedicated to promoting dialogue on challenges and opportunities arising from the current state of the global economy. Founded in 1994, at a time when globalization was an emerging phenomenon in international relations, and when the (WTO) was created in response to the new challenges faced by states and economic leaders, IEFA was also created against a backdrop of increased economic integration worldwide. European countries were laying the foundations John Tory, Mayor, City of Toronto of an economic union, while North America was setting up a free-trade zone under NAFTA. The first , organized in 1995, brought together members of civil society, international organizations, academics, business leaders, and decision makers to discuss these new challenges. John Tory, Mayor of the City of Toronto At a time when global economic leaders face lingering uncertainty and shifting realities, IEFA creates opportunities to promote dialogue and build networks. IEFA conferences enable participants to share perspectives on economic issues and provide a platform for constructive interaction. In pursuing its mission, IEFA fosters business development both in Canada and around the world, while also helping its participants gain a better understanding of the major challenges facing public and private sector organizations.

IEFA brings together heads of state, central bank governors, ministers and international business leaders to its four annual summits, held in Montreal, Toronto, Miami and Paris. The Forum

Ian Bremmer, President and Founder, Eurasia Group; also offers exclusive opportunities for business meetings intended and Editor-at-Large, TIME Magazine, in conversation to promote dialogue and partnership. with , Managing Director, International Monetary Fund (IMF)

SATELLITE EVENTS In addition to the public program, satellite sessions are organized in the margins of the Forum. In the form of working breakfasts, boardroom conversations and private gatherings with keynote speakers. In 2017, the 11th edition of the Toronto Global Forum included the following private sessions:

Expat Program

From October 30 to November 1, 2017, the International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA) hosted a special edition of the Toronto Global Forum (TGF) to mark the 150th anniversaries of Canada and Ontario. In conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of International Trade and the Ontario 150 Secretariat, the IEFA held the inaugural Canadian Expat Program.

This historic initiative brought over 40 expats together from across the globe, offering Ontario SMEs and students the unique opportunity to hear these world leaders share their expertise and experiences from their industries. Seventeen sessions, with an average of 40 attendees per session, were held over the course of the three days, covering such areas as finance, innovation, clean tech, artificial intelligence, e-commerce, real estate, and fashion. The expat speakers answered individual questions and offered advice and contacts, thus helping the SMEs and students to learn and develop their international networks.

By exchanging in discussions with the audience, expat speakers were also able to take some of the perspectives they retained from the SMEs and students back to their own networks and companies. Many remarked on the quality of the questions and the level of insight among their audiences. Well over a third of the expats ̶ including world leaders such as Dominic Barton, Moya Greene, Mark D. Wiseman and Deborah Gillis ̶ had speaking roles in the regular Toronto Global Forum program, which enabled expats to be both extensively involved in the Forum and play a substantial role. It is also significant to note that the IEFA successfully secured a number of bilateral meetings for the expats over the course of the three-day event.

Monica Gunaratnam, Senior Business Program Advisor, Ontario Ministry of International Trade, hosted site tours at four Toronto area industry hot spots, such as the MaRS Discovery District and the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI). These tours had many attendees including expats and Ontario Government representatives, who noted that they found the tours highly informative and useful for networking. Additional special events, the Ontario 150th Anniversary Breakfast and Expat Gala/Toronto Symphony Orchestra Performance at Roy Thomson Hall were both very successful and well attended. It was a great way to honour our expats who came from across the world to attend and participate in the program.

Through working with various Ontario municipalities and government agencies, such as the Toronto Fashion Incubator, the Canadian Expat Program was able to identify and contact professionals in new industries and

7 | P a g e

markets, including film and fashion. These partnerships will continue, in order to ensure that the expat network grows in the most effective manner.

The creation of the Canadian Expat Program has enabled the IEFA to lay the groundwork of what has unofficially been dubbed, an External Canadian Chamber of Commerce. This first group of over 40 expats represented over 20 industries, over 10 countries, and 5 continents. It was without a doubt an international gathering of some of Canada’s best and brightest.

Ontario’s 150th Anniversary Welcoming Breakfast Presented by the Government of Ontario and moderated by Cameron Sinclair, Assistant Deputy Minister, International Trade Programs, Ontario, the Breakfast welcomed over 150 participants who gathered to hear remarks by Michael Chan, Minister of International Trade, Ontario, and special-guest expats Deborah Gillis, President and Chief Executive Officer, Catalyst and Samir Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, SunCulture.

Private Breakfast: Guiding your Global Success Presented by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) the Private Breakfast was designed to highlight International investment and business prospects, and the benefits of doing business via the related Sharjah platform for corporates, SMEs, and institutions across multiple sectors. The Breakfast was held in the presence of His Excellency Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, Chief Executive Officer, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority. His Excellency Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority at the Private Breakfast presented Working Breakfast: Forecasting Our Energy Future by Shurooq Presented in collaboration with the Energy Council of Canada (ECC), the breakfast explored the future paths and scenarios that will lead the transformation to a clean, low-carbon economy and the technologies that will enable these different opportunities to succeed. Moderated by Graham Campbell, President, Energy Council of Canada (ECC), the session counted on the participation of speakers Colin Andersen, Chair, Energy Council of Canada (ECC); Christoph Frei, Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer, World Energy Council (WEC); Anthony Haines, President and Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Hydro Corporation; and Peter Gregg, President and Chief Executive Officer, Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)

City of Toronto Breakfast: Fostering Business Opportunities in Latin America Approximately 150 Ontario-based, Latin-American business and organization leaders gathered for this third session presented by City of Toronto and hosted by Michael Thompson, Councillor, under the title Pacific Alliance and Mercosur: Bridges to Bilateral Trade. The breakfast presented a conversation with Martin Vidal, Ambassador, Embassy of Uruguay to Canada; Bill Macheras, Trade Commissioner and InfoCentre Manager, Global Affairs Canada; Rodrigo Contreras, Trade and Investment Commissioner of Mexico in Toronto, ProMexico; and Veronica Richards, Vice-President, WW CALLS Canada.

BILATERAL MEETINGS On top of attending conferences, round tables, and private events, VIP guests have the opportunity to connect through the IEFA’s Bilateral Meetings Service.

The Bilateral Meetings Service enables stakeholders to maximize their participation at the Toronto Global Forum by giving them the opportunity to share their expertise and create new business partnerships. This service distinguishes the Forum’s conferences from other similar events.

One month ahead of the event, the Bilateral Meetings Coordinator begins to send out emails promoting the service among our speakers and partner. Requests usually start pouring in in the two weeks leading up to the Forum. The Coordinator is responsible for setting up and managing meetings on behalf of the requestors.

The second step in this process involves creating as many matches as possible, based on the requests received by the participants, in addition to taking a proactive approach and suggesting meetings with speakers that could be of interest to sponsors.

During the 2017 edition of the Toronto Global Forum 99 bilateral meetings took place over the three-day event in five meeting rooms set aside for this purpose. On top of these meetings entirely coordinated by the Forum, a great number of encounters also occurred spontaneously in the VIP lounge or were privately planned in advance.

MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS The objectives of the Marketing and Communications team is to promote an event that is unique, retain participants from previous years and enhance customer relationships by supporting and engaging IEFA partners. The Toronto Global Forum is supported by a communications plan that is focused on increasing the visibility of the event and enhancing partner relations.

Promotion The Toronto Global Forum team creates many promotional tools with a focus on the event’s themes, speakers and partners. Please refer to the Marketing Initiatives Advertising Calendar ̶ Appendix II for a complete listing of the different communications published.

New developments this year included the addition of a large horizontal screen in the main plenary room and additional screens outside the VIP Lounge. Due to the positive response to last year’s placement, we kept the interview booth and digital signage panel outside the main plenary room.

These different communication initiatives have proved very effective in communicating content, increasing the visibility of the event, and enhancing partner relations.

Global Public Affairs provided media monitoring during and immediately following the 11th edition of the Toronto Global Forum. The majority of the coverage came from online sources, including numerous posts on Twitter by high profile speakers and participants. As social media has increased its reach in comparison to traditional media over the years, we now have a dedicated person managing our social media accounts, and Twitter walls all around the conference site.

As a courtesy to our media guests, the Toronto Global Forum provided a media lounge where accredited journalists could work, equipped with a backdrop, appropriate flags, a stage, lighting, microphones, and two chairs, to facilitate on-site interviews.

Every story broadcast about the Forum included quotes by event speakers. All online articles, videos, and blog posts referred specifically to the IEFA and/or the Toronto Global Forum. Social media coverage was largely driven by event participants, many of whom tweeted photos of sessions and quotes from the speakers. There were many high-profile Twitter accounts that engaged in the conversation and the full list of posts can be viewed on the event’s Twitter account at @AmericasForum. The overall tone of the coverage was extremely positive and highlighted many topics discussed during the event.

Appendix VII: Canadian Expat Program

SUMMARY

From October 30 to November 1, 2017, The International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA) hosted a special edition of the Toronto Global Forum (TGF) to mark the 150th anniversaries of Canada and Ontario. In conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of International Trade and the Ontario 150 Secretariat, the IEFA held the inaugural Canadian Expat Program.

This historic initiative brought over 40 expats together from across the globe, offering Ontario SMEs and students the unique opportunity to hear these world leaders share their expertise and experiences from their industries. 17 sessions, with an average of 40 attendees per session, covering areas such as finance, innovation, clean tech, artificial intelligence, e-commerce, real estate, and fashion were held over the course of 3 days. The SMEs and students had the opportunity to ask questions both during the sessions as well as afterwards, giving them privileged and unprecedented access to notable expats. All of the expat speakers stayed in the room over their allotted times to individually answer questions and offer advice and contacts, helping the SMEs and students to considerably grow and develop their international networks.

Through the engagement of the audience and the exchange of information, expat speakers were also able to take some of the perspectives they retained from the SMEs and students back to their own networks companies. Many noted that they were fascinated by the quality of the questions and the level of insight amongst their audiences.

Well over a third of the expats had speaking roles in the regular Toronto Global Forum program, which allowed for their comprehensive integration into all of its aspects. World leaders such as Dominic Barton, Moya Greene, Mark Wiseman and Deborah Gillis, who were special requests from the Ontario Government, participated in various ways, rendering expat participation in the Toronto Global Forum highly substantial in nature. It is also significant to note that the IEFA successfully secured a number of bilateral meetings for the expats over the course of the 3 days.

The site tours hosted by Monica Gunaratnam at 4 Toronto area industry hot spots, such as the MaRS Discovery District and the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI), had a number of attendees including expats and Ontario Government representatives, who noted that they found the tours highly informative and useful for networking.

The Ontario 150th Anniversary Breakfast and Expat Gala/Toronto Symphony Orchestra Performance at Roy Thomson Hall were both very successful and well attended. It was the best way we could have honored our expats who came from across the world to attend and participate in the program.

Through working with various Ontario municipalities and government agencies, such as the Toronto Fashion Incubator, the Canadian Expat Program was able to identify and contact professionals in new industries and markets, including film and fashion. These partnerships will continue, in order to ensure that the expat network grows in the most effective manner.

The creation of the Canadian Expat Program has allowed for the laying of the groundwork of what has unofficially been dubbed, an External Canadian Chamber of Commerce. This first group of over 40 expats represented over 20 industries, over 10 countries, and 5 continents. It was without a doubt an international gathering of some of Canada’s best and brightest.

OBJECTIVES

The following objectives were reached: Position Ontario as a place of economic growth and prosperity for future generations. Provide tangible economic legacies, including: learning and showcase opportunities for participating students/young entrepreneurs; and new investment and trade opportunities for Ontario SMEs Enhance the Toronto Global Forum’s reputation as North America’s pre-eminent conference.
