Dr. Malatesta and Pasquale's nephew, Ernesto, think they have come up with the perfect con to get Pasquale to marry Ernesto's lover. In his scene you will see Dr. Malatesta trying to convince Pasquale that he has found the perfect woman for him. -- Heather Sanders Sunset Boulevard (Lyrics by Don Black & Christopher Hampton) In 1949 Hollywood, Joe Gillis must write for an aging actress, Norma Desmond, who still believes she’s a star. Joe tries to work with her but she proves to be extremely delusional. Joe leaves to go to a New Year’s Eve party and after a suicide attempt from Norma, Joe reluctantly goes back to her estate to continue to work on the script. – Jacob Cota No One Knows Who I Am (Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse) In the dressing room of the Red Rat, a popular red light district attraction in Camden Town, London, Lucy Harris has arrived late for her performance. Her boss known as Spider expects her to attract many clients tonight, and she must obey if she is to stay within his “good graces.” As she gets ready, she contemplates her position in life, wondering if anyone truly knows her. -- Amanda Duke Giants in the Sky (Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) Jack has just climbed down the beanstalk. In this song, Jack tells the town’s baker the story of what he saw. -- Natalie Love Ach, ich fühl’s (Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder) Pamina tries to speak with her love Tamino, but due to his vow of silence, he cannot respond. HUGH WOOLDRIDGE Director and Lighting Designer; Visiting Professor Hugh Wooldridge has produced, directed and devised theatre and television productions all over the world. He has taught and given master-classes in the UK, Europe, the US, South Africa and Australia. He trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and made his West End debut as an actor in The Dame of Sark with Dame Celia Johnson. Subsequently he performed with the London Festival Ballet / English National Ballet in the world premiere production of Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Rudolph Nureyev. At the age of 22, he directed The World of Giselle for Dame Ninette de Valois and the Royal Ballet. Since this time, he has designed lighting for new choreography with dance companies around the world including The Royal Ballet, Dance Theatre London, Rambert Dance Company, the National Youth Ballet and the English National Ballet Company. He directed the world premieres of the Graham Collier / Malcolm Lowry Jazz Suite Under A Volcano and The Undisput’d Monarch of the English Stage with Gary Bond portraying David Garrick; the Charles Strouse opera, Nightingale with Sarah Brightman at the Buxton Opera Festival; Francis Wyndham’s Abel and Cain (Haymarket, Leicester) with Peter Eyre and Sean Baker. He directed and lit the original award-winning Jeeves Takes Charge at the Lyric Hammersmith; the first productions of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and T. S. Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro- ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa- bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba- sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the- ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Orpheus: Cinematic (and Operatic) Evocations A number of cinematic productions have featured ancient pagan concepts of death and the afterlife, e.g. The Mummy (1932); Gladiator (2000). Within this sub-corpus, those involving Orpheus have a particular signature that began developing in the Renaissance. Poliziano’s Fabula di Orfeo (c. 1480) synthesized the Vergilian and Ovidian accounts into a pastoral drama. (Segal, 1989) Two early seventeenth century operas, the Rinuccini/Peri Euridice (1600) and the Striggio/Monteverdi L’Orfeo (1607), accommodated Baroque court patronage by refitting the tragic story with a deus ex machina-engendered happy ending. In a political denouement, the Parisian Buti/Rossi Orfeo (1647) pleased the French court by comparing Orpheus’ lyre to the royal fleur-de-lis. Considered together with the popular Halévy/Offenbach operetta, Orphée aux enfers (1858), which features an unhappily married Orpheus and Eurydice, the cumulative effect of such high-profile dramatized adaptations of the Orpheus myth was to transform its original tragic outcome and expand its dramaturgical potential with updated artistic, philosophical, and political themes. The early decades of the twentieth century contributed a dense cluster of equally innovative Orpheus operatic productions leading to Jean Cocteau‘s one-act tragédie, Orphée (1926), revised in 1950 as the first film featuring Orpheus. In his 1973 essay Du Cinématographe, Cocteau revealed his artistic reason for selecting Orpheus as his protagonist: (Cocteau, 1992) Nobody can believe in a famous poet whose name has been invented by a writer. Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.
