Review, Email Clients with Source Code Editing By Micheline Johnson Updated 2013-12-05 Why is source code editing desirable? It enables the addition of variable indenting and hanging indents, tables, images, charts, videos etc. the replacement of <p> tags with <div> tags, if para spacing is not required. Wikipedia lists most email clients. Of these, the free Windows or cross-platform GUI email clients are included in the Appendix. Of these, the current mainstream desktop GUI email clients include: 1. Outlook, overkill for most purposes, and is not free. 2. Outlook Express, not available for Windows 7 3. Windows Live Mail 4. Mozilla Thunderbird, does not natively support HTML editing or tables. 5. Eudora v7.1, runs on Microsoft Windows XP/2000 (http://www.eudora.com/download/). It has problems with Windows 7, see http://mcaf.ee/cxsw8 . It runs on Windows XP, and does not appear to support editing HTML source code, or tables. 6. Eureka Email. It is very difficult to uninstall, see http://mcaf.ee/1q0ka , so I did not test it. 7. Pegasus Mail. Pegasus v4.63 allows the insertion of a table and the editing of the number of rows or columns of that table; but it does not support editing of HTML source code. It supports hanging indents to increments of one tab spacing, which is very crude. 8. DreamMail 9. FoxMail 10. SeaMonkey. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/. Allows inserting of tables. Appears to allow insertion of HTML code, but does not allow viewing of the entire HTML source code. 11. Netscape Messenger used to have an HTML editor. On December 28, 2007, Netscape developers announced that AOL would discontinue support for Messenger along with the Navigator browser on February 1, 2008. AOL later extended support through March 1, 2008. Netscape Messenger included all the features of Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.9. 12. IncrediMail 13. Mulberry 14. Sylpheed 15. i.Scribe 16. Postbox Express 17. eM Client 18. Zimbra 19. Inky 20. Mailbird 21. The Bat! offers both an advanced plain text and a fully capable HTML editor, but costs $35 (Home Edition). Outlook Express Outlook Express is the best overall email client for Windows XP. It has tabs for WYSIWYG and Source Code. It allows the pasting of rich text (including indenting) and images into the New Msg window. It allows the editing of the HTML source code. However, it is not available for Windows 7. It does not support tables from the WYSIWYG window. Windows Live Mail Windows Live Mail does not support tables either. It allegedly supports HTML editing, but the code displayed when you press Ctrl+F2, though it is HTML, bears no relation to the text displayed in the WYSIWYG window. DreamMail and FoxMail are both from Chinese sources, and both support HTML editing and tables. FoxMail Installation of FoxMail is difficult because the installation program is in Chinese, and you are guessing which buttons to click on. It does not allow you to choose the location of the installation, and instead of installing in the Windows XP partition where the Setup file is located, it locates its files in the Windows 7 partition (if you have one). Fortunately, it makes a FoxMail shortcut on the desktop, which points to the location of the installation partition and folder. Once you have found the installation files, you can go to the Languages sub-folder and delete the Chinese language file chinese.lgb and thereafter the program runs in English. Creating a new message in FoxMail opens a rather simplified user interface. There is a "wand" icon on the toolbar, which if you click it, produces dropdown options: link table HTML editor The table option lets you specify the number of rows and columns initially, but not to change them later. There is no easy way to add variable indenting other than by hand in the HTML editor. DreamMail DreamMail, by contrast, is a more sophisticated and easy to use email client. The installation is in English, and it allows you to locate its files in the folder of your choice. Clicking the Compose button opens a new message with no background. Clicking the drop-down arrow allows you to select from a large number of attractive backgrounds for your msg. The HTML editor is available from the Edit menu: Edit | Edit HTML Source The Table dropdown menu lets you designate the number of rows and columns you want in your table, and when the table is selected, to add or subtract rows or columns. Variable indenting is not available other than by hand in the HTML editor, or by pasting in the indented text from a wordprocessor such as Word. There are large choices of emoticons that can be inserted in the text.
