Employer Toolkit 84 Inclusivity and Accessibility at the Core www.ictc-ctic.ca 7 Abstract The digital economy has and continues to play a key role in Alberta’s economic success and will be a central pillar to its recovery and rebound from COVID-19. Despite a struggling overall economy, employment in Alberta’s digital economy at the end of 2020 was above pre-pandemic levels. Not only has Alberta’s digital economy proven resilient to these large-scale economic shocks, but it has also created high quality employment for Albertans throughout one of the most challenging economic periods in modern history. Employers in this rapidly growing digital tech space continue to assert that the demand for talent far outstrips available supply. They are also becoming increasingly aware of the reality that leveraging all talent streams is essential, including Albertans with disabilities. People with disabilities represent an untapped pool of skilled workers. Many possess advanced education in STEM disciplines, business, social sciences, and legal studies. Yet, according to employers, engaging and hiring people with disabilities remains a challenge, with many not knowing where to begin. Using mixed methods—key informant interviews, literature review, an employer survey, workshops, and an advisory committee—this report looks at the barriers that people with disabilities face in accessing meaningful employment in Alberta’s digital economy. It also discusses the barriers, challenges, and overall uncertainty that persist among employers with respect to recruiting and retaining people with disabilities. These include a lack of knowledge of employer legal obligations and a lack of awareness of where to obtain reliable information and resources to shape better policies and practices. These and other factors combine to create employer resistance to hire people with disabilities. However, there are also some opportunities and a pathway forward. We wanted to make sure that every child was given the tools needed to communicate, express and invent whatever it was that came to their imagination! We wanted to do the thing that would give children the most opportunities possible to build their world. And we knew it was going to be by bringing code into Canadian elementary schools and their surrounding communities. We wanted to show young girls that code was a powerful means of expression and to show boys that girls were just as capable to code. We wanted to convince teachers that they could not only learn to code and learn to teach it, but learn to love it. We knew we wouldn’t be able to do it alone. So we reached out to governments, private sponsors, the educational system and national and international non-profits to take this crazy idea of making sure every child had the opportunity to learn to code, reality. As we enter our fifth year we have so much to celebrate! In 2017 I attended two important events. Basic learning objectives include locating, creating, evaluating and sharing information; the impact of technology on society and ethical issues surrounding the use and application of varying technologies. Jr. High Schools In Jr. High schools (Intermediate), 4% of overall classroom instructional time is allotted for technology education. Each grade level in junior high focus on different technology modules. Grade 7’s will complete the communications technology model, the grade 8’s will complete the control technology and production technology modules and grade 9’s will complete the energy and power technology module. High Schools High School graduation requirements require students to obtain 4 credits from the ‘other required credits’ program area, which includes foreign languages, business studies, religious studies and technology education. Currently, these high school technology education courses expose students to coding: Skilled Trades 1201 Integrated Systems 1205 Design and Fabrication 2202 Robotics Systems Technology 3205 Page 3 of 11 Post-Secondary Post-Secondary institutions in Newfoundland and Labrador offer numerous options for those looking to pursue a career in information technology. Post-secondary information technology programs inclusive of coding are as follows: Program Institution Computer Science Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador The Computer Science curriculum teaches students an array skills for whichever direction they choose in the IT field (Networking, Programming, Cloud Computing).
