Catholic Boy Punches Back to Win Pennine Ridge SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 2018 HAWKISH >MILES= THE BEST AT PENN CATHOLIC BOY PUNCHES Having been cross-entered for a potential clash with fellow BACK TO WIN PENNINE RIDGE >TDN Rising Star= Analyze It (Point of Entry) in Saturday=s GII Pennine Ridge S., Hawkish (Artie Schiller) shipped into Central Pennsylvania for the GII Penn Mile S. and arguably walked away with the mantle of the top sophomore turf male following a convincing three-length victory. Ultimately sent off the 7-5 chalk after battling GII American Turf hero Maraud (Blame) in a pari-mutuel sense, the athletic gelding was in the mix and headstrong through the opening exchanges, but Manny Franco was ultimately able to get the gelding to settle better and he raced in about sixth as California raider Encumbered (Violence) set the pace inside of Maraud for the opening half-mile. Steered out into the four path and facing the breeze down the back, Hawkish leapt into the bridle leaving the three-eighths pole and began picking off rivals one by one while covering extra real estate. Cont. p4 (click here) Catholic Boy (left) fights back | Joe Labozzetta photo >TDN Rising Star= Analyze It (Point of Entry) was nearly IN TDN EUROPE TODAY everyone=s banker to take his unbeaten streak to four in Saturday=s GII Pennine Ridge S., but Catholic Boy (More Than MASAR CONQUERS IN THE BLUE RIBAND Ready) had different ideas and, despite having to overcome Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) becomes a first Epsom Derby winner in the Godolphin blue. trouble in a couple of spots when push was coming to shove, Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. stuck to his guns and found the wire best. Having never been closer than fifth at the opening call of any of his six previous trips to the post, Catholic Boy was given an enterprising ride by Javier Castellano and while many thought it would be the chalk who would make the running, the 4-1 second choice set a solid early tempo. Analyze It was content to lay second into the backstretch run, until Untamed Domain (Animal Kingdom) made a mid-race bid three wide on the track, forcing Jose Ortiz to go for Analyze It a bit earlier than he had wanted in order to maintain his position. Untamed Domain called it a day and began to retreat three furlongs out, and everything looked to be going swimmingly for Analyze It, who loomed boldly outside Catholic Boy at the quarter pole. The two looked to exchange bumps in upper stretch and Analyze It came in on his foe in a more pronounced way at the eighth pole, causing Castellano to check and lose momentum atop Catholic Boy. The race appeared in safe keeping for the favorite as late as the sixteenth pole, but Catholic Boy refused to go away and was along in the waning strides. • Ave Papa Ave Papabile the Sacchetti Family, Their Art Patronage and Political Aspirations
FROM THE CENTRE FOR REFORMATION AND RENAISSANCE STUDIES Ave Papa Ave Papabile The Sacchetti Family, Their Art Patronage and Political Aspirations LILIAN H. ZIRPOLO In 1624 Pope Urban VIII appointed Marcello Sacchetti as depositary general and secret treasurer of the Apostolic Cham- ber, and Marcello’s brother, Giulio, bishop of Gravina. Urban later gave Marcello the lease on the alum mines of Tolfa and raised Giulio to the cardinalate. To assert their new power, the Sacchetti began commissioning works of art. Marcello discov- ered and promoted leading Baroque masters, such as Pietro da Cortona and Nicolas Poussin, while Giulio purchased works from previous generations. In the eighteenth century, Pope Benedict XIV bought the collection and housed it in Rome’s Capitoline Museum, where it is now a substantial portion of the museum’s collection. By focusing on the relationship between the artists in ser- vice and the Sacchetti, this study expands our knowledge of the artists and the complexity of the processes of agency in the fulfillment of commissions. In so doing, it underlines how the Sacchetti used art to proclaim a certain public image and to announce Cardinal Giulio’s candidacy to the papal throne. ______ copy(ies) Ave Papa Ave Papabile Payable by cheque (to Victoria University - CRRS) ISBN 978-0-7727-2028-2 or by Visa/Mastercard $24.50 Name as on card ___________________________________ (Outside Canada, please pay in US $.) • Gregory the Great
GREGORY THE GREAT Gregory’s life culminated in his holding the office of pope (590–604). He is generally regarded as one of the outstanding figures in the long line of popes, and by the late ninth century had come to be known as ‘the Great’. He played a critical role in the history of his time, and is regarded as one of the four great fathers of the Western Church, alongside Ambrose, Jerome and Augustine. This volume provides an introduction to Gregory the Great’s life and works and to the most fascinating areas of his thinking. It includes English translations of his influential writings on such topics as the interpretation of the Bible and human personality types. These works show Gregory communicating what seem to be abstruse ideas to ordinary people, and they remain highly current today. John Moorhead teaches late antiquity and medieval history at the University of Queensland, Australia, where he is McCaughey Professor of History. His publications include Theoderic in Italy (1992), Ambrose of Milan (1999) and The Roman Empire Divided (2001). THE EARLY CHURCH FATHERS Edited by Carol Harrison University of Durham The Greek and Latin Fathers of the Church are central to the creation of Christian doctrine, yet often unapproachable because of the sheer volume of their writings and the relative paucity of accessible trans- lations.
