Canale is also author of the book The Boys of Spring (Sport Classic Books, 2005), a collaborative effort with photography legend Ozzie Sweet. He’s also author of Tuff Stuff’s Baseball Memorabilia Guide (Krause Publications, 2001) and Mickey Mantle: The Yankee Years (Tuff Stuff Books, 1998).     The Voice of the Hobby column by Jeff Clow February, 2019 ---------------------------------------------------------- It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the launch of the next great phase of Starting Lineups. When I was approached by Hank Reed, the founder of this new website, I felt a sense of dé·jà vu. It took me back to 1989 when the editor of Tuff Stuff magazine asked me to write a column about Starting Lineups. Back then, I was living in Cincinnati and had written him asking why he didn’t have any coverage of an emerging hobby - the collecting of the Starting Lineup brand of sports figurines. That request in 1989 came out of the blue. But the more I pondered it, the more I thought it felt like something worth doing. I had developed a passion for collecting SLU figures by that time, and in my professional career I knew that passion was an integral part of any venture. Fast forward to 2019 and once again the opportunity to help relight the fire of SLU collecting is offered to me. The same thought process once again crosses my mind. Is it worth the effort? Is it realistic? Is there a path to success? And then I had a long conversation with Hank Reed. And without putting words in his mouth, I can say unequivocally that I heard the same passion in his plan to launch SLU Authority and help usher in the rebirth of a dedicated place for SLU fans worldwide. The word that came to mind for me almost immediately was dormant.

These are considered to be some of the first cigarette cards.[2] Other tobacco companies such as Goodwin & Co. soon followed suit. They first emerged in the U.S., then the UK, then, eventually, in many other countries. In the UK, W.D. & H.O. Wills in 1887 were one of the first companies to include advertising cards with their cigarettes, but it was John Player & Sons in 1893 that produced one of the first general interest sets ‘Castles and Abbeys’. Thomas Ogden soon followed in 1894 and in 1895, Wills produced their first set ‘Ships and Sailors’, followed by ‘Cricketers' in 1896.     Hobby Odds and Ends Super-seniors, Card indices, Kut Outs, 1956 flat hats, and Cobb By George Vrechek Super-senior squads change Several readers sent me comments that my February 2013 SCD articles proposing a game played by super- senior former major leaguers brought back fond memories of the players and their cards. Unfortunately one of my stars, Stan Musial, and my young manager, Earl Weaver, died shortly after the article was written. Since the article was published, the Wikipedia listing of the 100 oldest former major leaguers has continued to change. Other players I mentioned who also passed away were Virgil Trucks, Cot Deal, Joe Astroth, Grady Hatton, and Moon Mullen. At least six new players will be eligible for selection to the next version of the super-senior fantasy All-Star baseball team. “Youngsters” now appearing at the bottom of the list of living former major leaguers include pitcher Hal Brown, third baseman Bobby Brown, and outfielders Bill Renna, Irv Noren, Bob Usher, and George Shuba. Bobby Brown was 28 when he quit baseball in 1954 to become a doctor. Cardiologist Brown will be a valuable addition to the American League squad. All of the “rookies” are now 88 years-old and have plenty of baseball cards providing an opportunity to update the concept in a future article. Unfortunately I lost my oldest-living-man to throw out the first pitch. Jiroemon Kimura of Japan looked like he could still toss a pitch, but he died recently at age 116. I also lost some of the boys on my squad of the oldest former NFL players (SCD May and June 2013) with the deaths of Jack Butler (85) and Bill Austin (84).

    David Kathman, enthusiastic collector of hobby history By George Vrechek It is an understatement to say that collector David Kathman is enthusiastic, or that he gets into the details, or that he has a good memory. While he is like many of us who retained our childhood collections and got back into the hobby as adults, Kathman is now an avid collector of not only cards but hobby history. He enjoys obtaining and reading articles, ads and letters about the hobby origins and how collectors shared information and obtained cards. David Kathman with his copy of Burdick’s first catalog, The United States Card Collectors Bulletin from 1939 Pulp by the pound Kathman started picking up old hobby publications 25 years ago and has kept at it, piling up hobby pulp by the pound. In doing so he has often linked his collection to hobby pioneers (Burdick, Barker, Carter and Wagner) and a following generation of long-time hobbyists (Lipset, Medeiros, Lerner and Even). He has written about “the long and winding road” describing how the hobby grew. For example, he went through publications and traced how the short-prints in the 1948-9 Leaf baseball set were gradually discovered between 1959 and 1968. Shakespeare Scholar This enthusiasm and attention to detail is not hard to understand, given Kathman’s other interests. He works as a senior mutual fund analyst at Morningstar in Chicago, analyzing and reporting on fund performances. He has a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Chicago, speaks four languages and has expertise in Shakespearean theatre.
