1 Culture Bhutan has a profound cultural diversity. With more than 80 percent of the country being Buddhists, the ways of the Buddhist practice has had a huge impact on the Bhutanese culture. The influence of Buddhism is very visible in the everyday life of the Bhutanese people. The country boasts of thousands of monasteries and the landscape is dotted with stupas, prayer wheels, prayer flags and many other insignias celebrating the Buddhist religion. Festivals Calendar 2020 & 2021 Bhutan Festival or Tshechu in the local language is a religious event celebrated every year in various monasteries, temples and fortresses across the Kingdom of Bhutan. The dates and duration of the festivals vary from one district to another but they are always held on or around the 10th day of the lunar calendar corresponding to the birthday of Guru Padmasambhava, an 8th century Buddhist scholar. During Tshechus, dances are performed by monks as well as laymen wearing ornate costumes and masks; each aspect of dance has a symbolic meaning. Some of these festivals are observed to purify one’s soul and ward off evil spirits. The Thimphu Tshechu, Paro Tshechu and Jambay akhang Drup are among the biggest in terms of participation and audience. Most Tshechus also feature the unfurling of a Thongdrel (or thangka) – an embroidered painting. Thongdrels are especially impressive examples of Buddhist art and are considered so sacred that simply seeing a Thongdrel is said to cleanse the viewer of sin. BHUTAN – AN ANCIENT SPIRITUAL PATH This comprehensive exploration of Bhutan from west to central east – Bumthang known as the “ sacred valleys of Bhutan “ traverses areas of incredible natural beauty, visiting isolated monasteries, villages and valleys, and high-mountain passes offering breath-taking scenery. **************************************************************** DAY ONE: 22 May 2017 As you fly into Bhutan, (if the weather is clear) you may see the massive peaks of the eastern Himalaya, including Kanchenchunga (the third highest mountain in the world) and Bhutan's holy mountain, Chomolhari. On arrival in Paro, proceed through customs and immigration where you will be met by your Lifestyle Journeys guide, Tshering Dorji. After taking a rest at the hotel and having lunch, we will visit Ta Dzong (dzong means ―fortress), a circular fortification that once protected the Paro Valley from Tibetan invasion. Dzongs originally served three purposes: fortress, administrative center of local government, and center for the monks' religious activity. The dzong commands sweeping views of the valley below, and is a short walk from Paro’s traditional center, Paro Rinpung Dzong. Evening welcome session and cocktail hour in the hotel. DAY TWO: 23 May 2017 PARO TO PUNAKHA/WANGDI This morning we will have a Buddhist blessing ceremony gifted to us for the safe passage of our group throughout the Kingdom. We will then partake in a Buddhist mindfulness meditation and introduction to Buddhism in the hotel’s meditation’s center by a learned Lama/Khenpo. After the blessing we will commence our journey to the golden Punakha Valley,Bhutan’s ancient capital. The drive to Punakha starts along the winding road following the Pa Chu (chu means ―river‖) downstream to its confluence with the Wang Chu, then up-valley to Thimphu, the current-day capital. -
