17 Life Without Meaning? Richard Norman The Alpha Course, a well‐known evangelical Christian programme, advertises itself with posters displaying the words THE MEANING OF LIFE IS_________, followed by the invitation ‘Fill in the blanks at alpha.org’. Followers of the course will discover that ‘Men and women were created to live in a relationship with God’, and that ‘without that relationship there will always be a hunger, an emptiness, a feeling that something is missing’.1 We all have that need because we are all sinners, we are told, and the truth which will fill the need is that Jesus Christ died to save us from our sins. Not all Christian or other religious views about the meaning of life are as simplistic as this, but they typically share the assumptions that the meaning of life is to be found in some belief whose truth we need to recognize, and that this is a belief about the purpose for which we exist. A further implication is that this purpose is the purpose intended by the God who created us, and that if we fail to identify and live in accordance with that purpose, our lives will lack meaning. The assumption is echoed in the question many humanists will have encountered: if you don’t believe in a God, what’s the point of it all? And many people who don’t share the answer still accept the legitimacy of the question – ‘What is the meaning of life?’ – and assume that what we need is a correct belief, religious or non‐religious, which will fill the blank in the sentence ‘The meaning of life is …’. -

The Establishment Clause, Secondary Religious Effects, and Humanistic Education The Supreme Court decisions proscribing prayer' and Bible reading2 in public schools provoked considerable public debate. That debate has con- tinued,3 fueled in part by fear that the removal of those religious practices from public schools would hinder the moral development of school chil- dren.4 A number of different, avowedly nonreligious, moral education pro- grams5 that purport to encourage and channel the moral development of the individual child have emerged in the wake of the prayer and Bible- reading decisions.6 Although diverse in method, all of these programs, un- like more traditional forms of moral training,7 reflect the influence of an educational philosophy known as Humanistic Education. The Humanistic Education movement, originally concerned primarily with counteracting the dehumanizing character of technocratic modern ed- ucation,' has evolved into a comprehensive social and moral philosophy' 1. Descartes' Influence in Shaping the Modern World-View
R ené Descartes (1596-1650) is generally regarded as the “father of modern philosophy.” He stands as one of the most important figures in Western intellectual history. His work in mathematics and his writings on science proved to be foundational for further development in these fields. Our understanding of “scientific method” can be traced back to the work of Francis Bacon and to Descartes’ Discourse on Method. His groundbreaking approach to philosophy in his Meditations on First Philosophy determine the course of subsequent philosophy. The very problems with which much of modern philosophy has been primarily concerned arise only as a consequence of Descartes’thought. Descartes’ philosophy must be understood in the context of his times. The Medieval world was in the process of disintegration. The authoritarianism that had dominated the Medieval period was called into question by the rise of the Protestant revolt and advances in the development of science. Martin Luther’s emphasis that salvation was a matter of “faith” and not “works” undermined papal authority in asserting that each individual has a channel to God. The Copernican revolution undermined the authority of the Catholic Church in directly contradicting the established church doctrine of a geocentric universe. The rise of the sciences directly challenged the Church and seemed to put science and religion in opposition. A mathematician and scientist as well as a devout Catholic, Descartes was concerned primarily with establishing certain foundations for science and philosophy, and yet also with bridging the gap between the “new science” and religion. Descartes’ Influence in Shaping the Modern World-View 1) Descartes’ disbelief in authoritarianism: Descartes’ belief that all individuals possess the “natural light of reason,” the belief that each individual has the capacity for the discovery of truth, undermined Roman Catholic authoritarianism. -

As they were doing this, a second ‘distractor’ cursor partially matched their movements. Both humans and monkeys were asked to identify which computer cursor was being moved by them and responding to their intentions. This crisis involves a growing sense of malaise that leads to large-scale questions about whether life in the modern world can be seen as meaningful and good. I claim that confronting this problem is a central concern throughout Nietzsche’s philosophical career, but that his understanding of this problem and its solution shifts throughout different phases of his thinking. Part of what is unique to Nietzsche’s treatment of this problem is his understanding that attempts to imbue existence with meaning are self-undermining, becoming pathological and only further entrenching the problem. Nietzsche’s solution to this problem ultimately resides in treating meaning as a spiritual need that can only be fulfilled through a creative interpretive process. 11 Truth and Transcendence Turning the Tables on the Liar Paradox GILA SHER 11.1. AMethodological Turnaround Confrontingthe liar paradox is commonly viewed as a prerequisite for developing a theory of truth. As soon as the truth theorist accepts one of the most minimal principles of truth, the equivalence principle, which in one of its forms is often formulated(schematically) by (E) <P> is true iff(if and only if) P, where "P" stands for any sentence and" <P>" stands for a name of that sentence, the liar paradox arises. And it is only after the truth theorist incorporates some device Oike a Tarskian hierarchy or a K.ripkeangrounding process) forblocking the paradox that he is entitled to continue developing his theory. In this chapter I would like to turn the tables on this traditional conception of the relation between the liar paradox and the theory of truth. I would like to show that the theorist of truth need not worry about the liar paradox in developing her theory, that if she focuses deeply enough on the "material" adequacy of her theory (i.e., whether it adequately accounts for the nature of truth) as distinct from its "formal" adequacy (i.e., whether it is a consistent theory), the liar challenge is unlikely to arise for her theory at all. 1 In approaching the liar challenge in this way, we are treating the theory of truth like most other theories. Consider a physical, psychological, geometrical, or moral theory. Normally, the theorist in any of these fields is aware that his theory must sati�fy certain norms of formal adequacy. -

TRISTRAM ENGELHARDT (Rice Universtiy / USA) ABSTRACT Given intractable secular moral pluralism, the force and significance of the four principles (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice) of Tom Beauchamp and James Childress must be critically re-considered. This essay examines the history of the articulation of these four principles of bioethics, showing why initially there was an illusion of a common morality that led many to hold that the principles could give guidance across cultures. But there is no one sense of the content or the theoretical justification of these principles. In addition, a wide range of secular moral and bioethical choices has been demoralized into lifestyle choices; the force of the secular moral point of view has also been deflated, thus compounding moral pluralism. It is the political generation of the principles that provides a common morality in the sense of an established morality. The principles are best understood as embedded not in a common morality, sensu stricto, but in that morality that is established at law and public policy in a particular polity. Although moral pluralism is substantive and intractable at the level of moral content, in a particular polity a particular morality and a particular bioethics can be established, regarding which health care ethics consultants can be experts. For M.A;Semester-3 Contemporary Western Philosophy By Dr. Vijeta Singh Assistant Professor University Department of Philosophy(P.U) Soren Kierkegaard Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), considered to be the first existentialist philosopher, was of Danish nationality. He was also a theologian, poet, social critic and religious author. Accordingly, his work crosses the boundaries of philosophy, theology, psychology, literary criticism, devotional literature and fiction. He made many original conceptual contributions to each of the disciplines he employed. He was a great supporter of freedom and values of human individual. The main philosophical themes and principal conceptions of Kierkegaard’s philosophy are truth, freedom, choice, and God. For him, human beings stand out as responsible individuals who must make free choices. Kierkegaard was born on May 5, 1813 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied Theology and Philosophy from Copenhagen University . Kierkegaard lived the majority of his life alone. He left his native Copenhagen only three or four times, each time to visit Berlin , and never married, though he was engaged for a short time. Kierkegaard is known for his critiques of Hegel, for his fervent analysis of the Christian faith, and for being an early precursor to the existentialists. He is known as the “father of existentialism”. Kierkegaard is generally considered to have been the first existentialist philosopher, though he did not use the term existentialism. He proposed that each individual , not society or religion, is solely responsible for giving meaning to life and living it passionately and sincerely, or authentically. Kierkegaard is said to have inaugurated modern existentialism in the early 19th century, while Jean-Paul Sartre is said to have been the last great existentialist thinker in the 20th century. -
