The announcement for this lucrative deal was signed at a star-studded media conference jointly organized in London today. Vijender Singh, the 2008 Olympic Bronze Medallist, has signed a multi-year promotional agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports & Entertainment, that will see the talented middleweight fight a minimum of six times in the first year as he looks to herald in a new era for Asian boxing. Speaking on the landmark deal Mr. Neerav Tomar, MD & CEO of IOS Sports & Entertainment said “It's an historic moment for Indian boxing with Vijender turning Pro. He's a top fighter and is extremely motivated to train hard and perform. I have known Francis for over five years and we have been in discussions for a long time to bring the sport of Pro boxing to India and finally we will be introducing it soon in a big way with Vijender.” He further added “Indian boxers have huge potential to be world beaters and Vijender will be the flag bearer for a nation of over billion people. IOS Sports & Entertainment has a long standing history and has been a pioneer in promoting boxing talent and stars in India. Vijender’s early career was managed by IOS and in the last four years, IOS has successfully promoted and managed MC Mary Kom exclusively. Mary Kom is the classic story of a woman boxer beating all odds from the remote north eastern part of the country to the Olympic arena which was then followed by a 100 crore plus biopic and a best selling biography. Boxing and IOS go hand in hand and now IOS and Vijender Singh are back together with a historic moment to put India on the World boxing map. IOS also plans to set up professional boxing in India and will announce its plans shortly. A thrilled Vijender Singh said, “I'm excited to turn pro and looking forward to the new chapter of my life. I want to train hard and perform for my country at the global level. IOS will be managing my pro boxing career along with Queensbury Promotions with broadcaster BoxNation. Arguably one of India’s most successful amateur boxers ever, a sensational career has seen Vijender win Silver at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games; Bronze at the 2006 Asian Games, 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2009 World Amateur Championships and 2010 Commonwealth Games; Gold at the 2010 Asian Games, and rated as the world’s number one middleweight in 2009. His Bronze medal victory in Beijing was a landmark event in India’s rich sporting history as it was the nation’s first ever boxing medal in the Games and he is credited for the incredible surge in boxing’s popularity in his home country since. Whether we are talking about Bollywood superstars, Olympic medallists, or cricketing heroes, there are numerous examples of celebrities using their fame to advance a political agenda. From promoting democracy to advocating for a particular political party, or even running for election, celebrities are a mainstay in Indian elections. In Australia, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is probably more famous for marrying American popstar Nick Jonas than her Bollywood career. Back in India however, the former Miss World is one of Bollywood’s highest paid actresses. On social media she’s followed by 40 million people on Facebook, 35 million on Instagram, and 25 million on Twitter. Earlier this week Chopra Jonas proudly shared with the world a picture of the election ink on her index finger. Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma all shared similar photos encouraging their collective half a billion social media following to vote. Celebrities encouraging Indians to exercise their democratic right to vote is an important dimension of the 2019 general election. India is a country where 900 million people are eligible to vote, 130 million of them for the first time. But the use of influence on social media to mobilise voters is just one example of the way celebrities play an increasingly important role in Indian politics.

    India, a country with second largest population, has struggled to win medals at Olympics. India dominated the hockey field in which it has won eight gold medals so far. But after 1980 Moscow Olympics, the hockey team failed to snatch a single medal. India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete Norman Pritchard. The nation first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920, and has participated in every Summer Games since then. India has so far won 9 gold medals, 6 silver and 11 bronze medals, a total of 26 medals in 30 Olympics Games. In the 1900 Paris Olympics, Norman Pritchard won silver medals in the 200m and the 200m hurdles. Between 1928 and 1980, Indian hockey team won 8 gold medals (1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1980). These were the only medal for India during that period. In the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, besides the gold from Indian men's hockey team, Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav won a bronze in men's wrestling freestyle bantamweight category.     BOXING XIX COMMONWEALTH GAMES, NEW DELHI (OCTOBER 03-14, 2010) The Indian pugilists cashed greatly on the impetus provided by the bronze medal winning performance by Vijender Singh at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, by performing exceptionally in the international arena. Ever since the Beijing Olympics the performance of the Indian boxers has had an upward graph, which was clearly visible in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games which were held in Delhi. India won 101 medals in total, including 38 Gold medals, enabling it to finish the Games at second position behind Australia. An unprecedented haul of three gold and four bronze medals in boxing at the Games, was a significant contribution to Indian overall medal tally. Suranjoy Singh (52kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg) and Paramjeet Samota (+91kg) were the gold- medallists for India, while star attraction Vijender Singh (75kg), Amandeep Singh (49kg), Jai Bhagwan (60kg) and Dilbag Singh (69kg) had to be content with bronze medals after losing in the semi finals. This was India’s best-ever medal haul at the Games, two better than the previous edition in Melbourne where the country fetched just one gold.
