Tripp1,2,4 ABSTRACT.—Despite a dearth of biological study in the area, the Purgatory Watershed concentrated in southeastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico is home to a number of unique land formations and endemic organisms. At onetime nonarable land where Dust Bowl storms of the 1930s originated, the Purgatory Watershed is presently home to the Comanche National Grasslands, the Picketwire Canyonlands, and the expansive Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site. -
Porter's Sagebrush Is Endemic to the Wind River and Powder River Basins in Central Wyoming
Status of Porter’s Sagebrush (Artemisia porteri) in Wyoming Prepared for the Bureau of Land Management Wyoming State Office And Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, University of Wyoming By Walter Fertig Botanical Consultant 1117 West Grand Canyon Dr. Kanab, UT 84741 25 September 2002 Agreement # K910-A4-0011 Task Order No. TO-09 ABSTRACT Porter's sagebrush is endemic to the Wind River and Powder River basins in central Wyoming. It is found primarily in sparsely vegetated Artemisia pedatifida, A. longifolia, or A. porteri communities on barren clay or ashy badlands, flats, or gullies derived from the Wind River, Wagon Bed, or Frontier formations. This species is currently known from 11 extant occurrences consisting of at least 60 subpopulations covering less than 1250 acres. Individual colonies typically number from 100-1000 individuals and occupy areas of 1-50 acres. Based on surveys in 1999, the current population of Porter's sagebrush is conservatively estimated at 50,000-75,000 plants. Porter's sagebrush is primarily threatened by mineral development (oil, natural gas and uranium) within its limited range and specialized habitat. This species was designated as Sensitive by the BLM in 2001 and occurs primarily on BLM lands in the Buffalo, Casper, and Lander field offices. No populations currently receive formal protection, although the population in the Lysite Badlands is managed under special use regulations in the BLM Lander Resource Area Resource Management Plan. Porter's sagebrush is now known to be more widespread and abundant in Wyoming than previously suspected. The projects, both conducted by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, are two distinct projects that are highly integrated with respect to methodology and fieldwork. Both projects utilized the same Natural Heritage methodology that is used throughout the globe, and both searched for and assessed the plants, animals, and plant communities on the Colorado Natural Heritage Program’s list of rare and imperiled elements of biodiversity. Each report prioritizes potential conservation areas based on the relative significance of the biodiversity they support and the urgency for protection of the site. All information explaining Natural Heritage methodology and ranks is repeated in each report, so that each report can stand alone and be used independently of the other. This report, Survey of Critical Biological Resources of Pueblo County, presents all potential conservation areas identified in Pueblo County that support rare and imperiled plants, animals, and significant plant communities, including wetland and riparian areas. -

Anderson. i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) performed field surveys and rare plant mapping for five select sensitive plant species at Fort Carson: dwarf milkweed (Asclepias uncialis ssp. uncialis), round-leaf four-o'clock (Mirabilis rotundifolia), Arkansas Valley evening primrose (Oenothera harringtonii), Pueblo goldenweed (Oonopsis puebloensis), and Arkansas River feverfew (Parthenium tetraneuris). The species selected are among the Colorado Species of Special Concern identified by Fort Carson and some are on the list of Species at Risk on Department of Defense (DoD) installations. -

Abstract This checklist has 785 species and 801 taxa (for taxa, the varieties and subspecies are included in the count) in 90 plant families. The most common plant families are the grasses (Poaceae) and the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Of this total, 513 taxa are definitely known to occur on the Comanche National Grassland. The remaining 288 taxa occur in nearby areas of southeastern Colorado and may be discovered on the Comanche National Grassland. The Author Dr. Donald L. Hazlett has worked as an ecologist, botanist, ethnobotanist, and teacher in Latin America and in Colorado. He has specialized in the flora of the eastern plains since 1985. His many years in Latin America prompted him to include Spanish common names in this report, names that are seldom reported in floristic pub- lications. He is also compiling plant folklore stories for Great Plains plants. Since Don is a native of Otero county, this project was of special interest. The Flora of Harding County: a Century of Botany in Northwestern South Dakota, Usa

Introduced species have increased from five percent of the flora to 13% over the last century. Relatively small changes have occurred in plant species duration, species habit or major groups over 100 years. Mean coefficients of conservatism varied from 4.3 to 6.2 in eight areas across the county, with the lowest values in riparian areas and highest values in pine-dominated buttes. Keywords floristics, grassland, Northern Great Plains, South Dakota, vegetation INTRODUCTION This report documents vascular plant species from Harding County, South Dakota, from historical and recent plant collections. Literature describing the flora of Harding County is lacking. The most notable publication is by Visher (1914) who completed a species list for the county. Visher’s publication was based upon collections made by him in 1910-1912, and collections made by Rowley in 1909, Fromme in 1910, and Over in 1911. Heidel and Dueholm (1995) reported on “sensitive” species in Custer National Forest in Carter County, Montana, and Harding County.
