The following letter was received by me regarding last month's edition: Dear Editor, I am somewhat saddened to be the one to report this to you however, in reading the December edition of "The PADD" I was shocked to read your answers to the November USF Trivia contest. Two of your TOS trivia answers are actually incorrect: " What is the name of the USS Enterprise's first Captain?" You state it is Christopher Pike. However, you are mistaken. According to the "Star Trek Encyclopedia" (Written by Michael Okuda, Denise Okuda, and Debbie Mirek, Pocket books aka "The Bible") on page 90, the FIRST captain of the USS Enterprise was Captain Robert April in 2245. "What was the name of the USS Enterprise's second Captain who conducted a five year mission of space exploration?" The 2nd Captain was not James T. Kirk, but was Christopher Pike. Captain James T. Kirk did not Captain the USS Enterprise until 2264, 19 years after the Enterprise was launched from San Francisco Yards. Sincerly, LT(jg) Jacques St.Duiex ATAC/SEC USS Federation Dear Mr. St. Duiex, Thank you so much for your letter. After going back to the source you quoted, I am happily printing a retraction. Thank you very much for your input, and keep on Trekkin'!! Sincerely, Commander Tamara Zekad Editor in Chief USF Trivia. Don't forget about the USF Log Book Look! There! In the distance! What is that? As you approach the images, they form into three figures. What's this? Their pips indicate they are of high rank. In fact, two are Captains and one is a Commander. You come closer. You see their eyes. Bleary, red. Suddenly, they see you. One of them puts her hands up to her face to block you from seeing. One ducks down. The last simply slumps forward, banging her head. But it is too late. You have seen them. A voice speaks. "These are the editors of the USF Log Book. Their continuing mission... to provide you with steady entertainment packaged up into a single download. To boldly go where..." Suddenly, another USF officer runs on. "Wait a second, wait a second. Do you think that these 'editors' do all the work? What about us?" You turn your head to look. You see a whole supporting cast! All of them! (listed at the end of the Log Book). ~~Well!~~ you think. ~~All these people, taking up their time just to send the Log Book to little old me?~~ "What?!?" one of the editors suddenly says. "We're not sacrificing! We enjoy doing this for you! <<and of course, more admonitions that I simply can't write>>" You are confused until you realize that the speaker is telepathic, you nod, pretending agreement, but feeling small and grateful, but insignificant compared to the staff of... THE USF LOG BOOK! (Courtesy of LtSperol) That's right, you too can get in on another one of the USF's best kept secrets, the USF Log Book. We are here for you. Did you wonder where the Log Excerpts and stories went? Well they went to the USF LogBook, a publication solely dedicated to showing off the best in creativity of the USF. I always wanted to conquer a planet. (A Piece of the Action) 3. McCoy's blood pressure has dropped to 170/100. 2. It makes Spock's eyebrow twitch. And Kirk's Number One reason for violating the Prime Directive: 1. I noticed my hairline receding that day. (Nitpicker's Guide to Classic Trek) ¿¿STAR TECH?? By: Lt(jg) Doug Zax Please, PLEASE send me your technical and scientific questions. The only requirements are that they have to be related to Star Trek in some way. Send your questions to [email protected]. Add "STAR TECH" to the subject box. Here are two examples: Dear Doug: How does the comm system find people to transmit the message to them? Myself Dear Myself: Whenever you tap your comm badge, you say, for example, "Lt Doug to Lt Jere". This tells the computer who to search for. Then the computer looks for the person, in this case Lt Jere's, comm badge. Usually, the computer knows your general location, because the computer keeps tabs on where you go. If you leave a room, the computer keeps a note of it. This helps if you are looking for someone also, but it only works if the person is wearing a comm badge. If the computer cannot locate the person, it tells you by saying "Lt Jere in not onboard." Once the person is located, the computer transmits the message "Lt Doug to Lt Jere" to Jere. It then activates Jere's comm badge, so the two people can communicate. The comm badge acts as a microphone, and if the other person is on the ship, the onboard speakers on the ship replay the message to that person. If the person is in an area where there are no speakers, or on a planet or on another ship, then the commbadge doubles as a speaker, and the message is replayed through it (see diagram below).

  • Trekonderoga 2018
Special Guests Karl Urban Original Star Trek series fan and New Zealand-born actor Karl Urban actively pursued and won the role of Dr. Leonard McCoy on 2009’s motion picture named, appropriately enough, Star Trek. In his portrayal, Karl evoked many of the subtle mannerisms and vocalisms made famous by one DeForest Kelley of an earlier era – one could consider his performance as an ultimate fan tribute. Karl was interested in acting from a very early age, debuting at age 8 in the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman. Internationally he appeared in both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and its spin-off Xena: Warrior Princess, playing recurring roles in both American/New Zealand series. He eventually started working on Hollywood productions and in relatively no time was in big productions such as The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, and Doom. Hollywood press has speculated that he could have landed the role of “James Bond” had not previous film commitments gotten in the way (the role went to Daniel Craig). Other films he appeared in include Red, Dredd, The Loft, Pete’s Dragon, while Karl most recently appeared as “Skurge” in 2016’s Thor: Ragnarok. Karl is active on the convention circuit and makes his first bombshell appearance at this year’s edition of Trekonderoga! Be sure not to miss your opportunity to meet Karl onboard the original Enterprise – where else but in Sickbay, naturally – in a time-defying trip back to the original series sets with today’s Dr. McCoy! Appears Saturday & Sunday only Gates McFadden Not many Enterprise-D characters could call their Captain by his first name, but Doctor Beverly Crusher, memorably played by Gates McFadden, certainly could – and did.

  • The History of Star Trek
The History of Star Trek The original Star Trek was the brainchild of Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991), a US TV producer and scriptwriter. His idea was to make a TV series that combined the futuristic possibilities of science fiction with the drama and excitement of TV westerns (his original title for the series was ‘Wagon Train to the Stars’). Star Trek was first aired on American TV in 1966, and ran for three series. Each episode was a self-contained adventure/mystery, but they were all linked together by the premise of a gigantic spaceship, crewed by a diverse range of people, travelling about the galaxy on a five-year mission ‘to explore new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no man has gone before’. Although not especially successful it attracted a loyal fan-base, partly male fans that liked the technological and special effects elements of the show. But the show also attracted a large number of female fans, many of whom were drawn to the complex interaction and dynamic between the three main characters, the charismatic but impetuous Captain Kirk (William Shatner), the crotchety old doctor McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and the coldly logical Vulcan science officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy). After the show was cancelled in 1969 the fans conducted a lengthy and ultimately successful campaign to resurrect the franchise. Roddenberry enjoyed success with several motion pictures, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979); action-thriller Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982); Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and the more comic Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).

  • 25. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS Overture 16-38
DISC ONE: FILM SCORE 1. Main Title The first six STAR TREK films, despite their varied tones, feature bold and declarative main title cues—energetic anthems that promise high adventure amongst the stars. GENERATIONS takes a more reflective and subdued approach, opening with a splash of shimmering, synth-enhanced textures and a mysterioso four-note device (a variant of what will become the film's threat motive). As a lone champagne bottle arcs through the vacuum of space, clustered tones swell majestically under the title, and a quasi-religious chorus wordlessly voices McCarthy’s theme for the paradisiacal Nexus. The threat motive variant resurfaces briefly, before swirling harp and keyboard usher in an ennobling melody for trumpet. This is the first of McCarthy’s “captain’s themes,” used to represent Starfleet and its lofty ideals. Ascending figures culminate in joyous French horn exclamations of Alexander Courage’s classic STAR TREK fanfare from the original television series, as the bottle shatters against the hull of the USS Enterprise-B. 2. Past Glory Mark tree and harp glissandi maintain the dreamlike atmosphere as Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) and Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) step onto the bridge of the new Enterprise, where Captain John Harriman (Alan Ruck) greets them as honored guests. The Courage fanfare plays softly as Kirk takes in the scene, moving into a statement of the Starfleet theme as Chekov introduces Demora Sulu (Jacqueline Kim), the daughter of Kirk’s former helmsman. The cue finishes with a gentle horn line as Kirk contemplates the rapid passage of years.

  • Major Kira of Star Trek: Ds9: Woman of the Future, Creation of the 90S
MAJOR KIRA OF STAR TREK: DS9: WOMAN OF THE FUTURE, CREATION OF THE 90S Judith Clemens-Smucker A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2020 Committee: Becca Cragin, Advisor Jeffrey Brown Kristen Rudisill © 2020 Judith Clemens-Smucker All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Becca Cragin, Advisor The 1990s were a time of resistance and change for women in the Western world. During this time popular culture offered consumers a few women of strength and power, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Major Kira Nerys, a character encompassing a complex personality of non-traditional feminine identities. As the first continuing character in the Star Trek franchise to serve as a female second-in-command, Major Kira spoke to women of the 90s through her anger, passion, independence, and willingness to show compassion and love when merited. In this thesis I look at the building blocks of Major Kira to discover how it was possible to create a character in whom viewers could see the future as well as the current and relatable decade of the 90s. By laying out feminisms which surround 90s television and using original interviews with Nana Visitor, who played Major Kira, and Marvin Rush, the Director of Photography on DS9, I examine the creation of Major Kira from her conception to her realization. I finish by using historical and cognitive poetics to analyze both the pilot episode “Emissary” and the season one episode “Duet,” which introduce Major Kira and display character growth.

  • Popular Imagination and Identity Politics: Reading the Future in Star Trek: Next Generation
Western Journal of Communication, 65(4) (Fall 20011, 392-415 Popular Imagination and Identity Politics: Reading the Future in Star Trek: The Next Generation Brian L. Ott and Eric Aoki Through an analysis of the popular syndicated television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, this essay begins to theorize the relationship between collective visions of the future and the identity politics of the present. Focusing on the tension between the show's utopian rhetoric of the future and its representational practices with regard to race, gender, and sexuality, it is argued that The Next Generation invites audiences to participate in a shared sense of the future that constrains human agency and (re)pro duces the current cultural hegemony with regard to identity politics. The closing section calls for critics to continue politicizing mediated images that appeal to popular imagi nation and to develop and implement a pedagogical practice of counter-imagination. TAR TREK-by which we mean the four dramatic television series, S the animated cartoon, the nine full-length motion pictures, the hundreds of novels and comics, the multi-million-dollar-a-year mer chandizing industry of toys, games, recordings, and clothing, the un precedented exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum in Wash ington D.C., the science modules developed for teaching elementary school children about physics and medicine (Mestel, 1994; Anthony, 1994), the special topics courses at colleges and universities (Nagler, 1994), and the three distinctive fan co-cultures of Trekkers, Trekkies, and slash novelists each with their own annual conventions (Tulloch & Jenkins, 1995; Bacon-Smith, 1992; Penley, 1997)-has been entertain ing audiences, young and old, for forty years now.
