The Million carrying her first foal to be offered at public auction for has been won by foreign- more than 50 years, which puts Dancing Rain=s sale Little Mike takes 2012 Million into clear perspective. She is a gorgeous mare, she is a Four-Footed Fotos trained runners in three of the last five years, and dual Classic winner and she is in foal to the best British-based Grandeur (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) leads a six- racehorse most of us will ever see. The Yvonne Jacques colorbearer took a pair of Grade IIs in California last year. Glen Hill Farm=s Marketing Mix (Medaglia d=Oro) figures to be the shortest price in Arlington=s Saturday Grade Is as she looks to avenge a head defeat in last year=s Beverly D. S. The dark bay has scored twice at the highest level since then, and most recently bested the boys in Betfair Hollywood Park=s July 14 GIII Sunset H. Arlington morning-line maker Joe Kristufek has installed Marketing Mix, who will break from post six in a field of nine, as the 2-1 chalk. The Arlington Million is a AWin and You=re In@ event for the GI Breeders= Cup Turf, while the Beverly D. offers an automatic berth to the GI Breeders= Cup F/M Turf. The GI Secretariat S. is likely the most wide-open of the card=s three prestigious races, featuring a field of 13 sophomores with little to separate them. • Development of a Welfare Index for Thoroughbred Racehorses
DEVELOPMENT OF A WELFARE INDEX FOR THOROUGHBRED RACEHORSES Alison Glen Mactaggart M. Qual. Psychology A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Veterinary Science Abstract A uniform method capable of measuring animal welfare within the Thoroughbred Racing Industry (TBRI) does not exist. The aims of this study were to first investigate the importance of different welfare issues for Thoroughbred Racehorses (TBR) in Australia and then to incorporate them into a TBR welfare index (TRWI) that could be utilised in the industry. The second aim was assisted by the first, which utilised the expert opinion of stakeholders with in the TRWI, highlighting those aspects of husbandry requiring most improvement, and validated with behavioural measures. National and State Associations linked to racing were invited to send two delegates (experts) to a stakeholder meeting to determine key welfare issues, which they considered may have negative equine welfare implications. Following this a survey was created which posed vignettes of different combinations of welfare issues, which was subsequently presented to stakeholders around Australia. Fourteen key welfare issues were identified, each with two to four levels that were related to common husbandry practices. The 224 respondents identified the following welfare issues in declining order of importance: horsemanship > health and disease > education of the horse > track design and surface > ventilation > stabling > weaning > transport > nutrition > wastage > heat and humidity > whips > environment > gear. Further analysis of data tested the statistical significance of demographic factors, which determined that the respondents were relatively uniform in their answers. The TRWI which emerged from the responses could potentially be used to identify and improve welfare in training establishments.

  • Enable Electric in King George Cont
SUNDAY, 30 JULY, 2017 The King George took on an entirely different shape as the ENABLE ELECTRIC heavy rain fell on already-deadened ground. Despite the Epsom Oaks being staged in a thunderstorm, the latest Juddmonte IN KING GEORGE sensation had it slick there as she readily turned back Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) on June 2 and it was even quicker as she completed the double in the Irish equivalent two weeks prior to this. Tactics were certain to play a significant part here, with her potentially tricky draw in seven leaving her vulnerable to early scrimmaging, but Frankie was happy to let her bounce out and put her head in front until Maverick Wave crossed over to provide the lead. With Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for company as they ignored the pacemaker, Enable settled perfectly and had stablemate Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling) behind along with Idaho as Ulysses travelled with his customary ease and Jim Crowley tracked their every move. Before the turn for home Highland Reel was the first to struggle, and as he laboured and Ulysses nipped up his inner Enable dominates a rain-soaked King George | Racing Post Idaho lost vital momentum, but Enable moved forward with Jack Hobbs and for a brief period a Gosden one-two was likely.
