She was dubbed the "Poor Little Rich Girl," first when she was given a lavish and expensive debutante ball in 1930, amid the Great Depression, and later due to a notoriously troubled private life. Heiress to the retail tycoon Frank Winfield Woolworth, Hutton was one of the wealthiest women in the world. Sports Car Paradise: Racing in Los Angeles1 On the weekend of September 21-22, 1957, the California Sports Car Club held the first running of the International Road Races at Riverside International Motor Raceway. Almost 200 drivers, predominantly from towns and cities across Southern California, competed against each over the course of thirteen races in European and American sports cars in front of 27,000 spectators. Sports columnist Bob Hunter of the Los Angeles Examiner lauded Riverside as the “newest spoke” in the region’s “major league wheel” that included football, boxing, golf, and tennis. Southern California sports car racers finally had a “home” that was “worthy of their skills” so they would not have to venture out to “foreign” tracks to win trophies and thrill crowds.2 The U.S. Grand Prix for Sports Cars at Riverside the following year in October 1958 drew in 72,000 fans, an impressive number for a sport that was barely ten years old. That same year witnessed 100,000 in attendance at the Los Angeles Rams-Chicago Bears football game, a major league baseball record crowd of 78,000 at the Dodger’s opening day, and 61,000 horse racing fans at Santa Anita on Derby Day. The popularity of sports car racing supported the Los Angeles Times’ claim that Southern California was the “sports capital of the world.”3 Beginning in the late 1940s, a community of motoring enthusiasts centered in Los Angeles embraced the amateur racing of two-seat European and American performance cars. -

December 29, 2014 AONE PIZZA AND A MOVIE: The Golden Age of Auto Racing Revisited Part II—1960 through 1966 ©* By Phillip Bostwick On January 17, 2015, at promptly 4:00 p.m. the lights at Josiah Smith Tavern in Weston, MA will go down and AONE Webmaster and movie projectionist extraordinaire Dave Pratt will start a High Definition Blu-Ray DVD of the 1966 film Grand Prix. The two hour and 56 minute film has an intermission period during which pizza and salad will be served. Following the second half of the movie two special features will be shown for those who wish to stay. The first, Pushing the Limit: the Making of Grand Prix, is a 30 minute special in which the film’s director, John Frankenheimer, explains how the movie was made. The second, Flat Out: Formula One in the Sixties, is a 16 minute special featuring interviews with Formula One drivers of the period including Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Dan Gurney and Phil Hill. Motorsports journalists recall Jim Clark and other drivers. The film stars James Garner as the American Formula One driver, Yves Montand as the aging French champion driving for Ferrari near the end of his career, Antonio Sabato as the rookie Italian driver for Ferrari, Brian Bedford as the Scot driving for a “British Racing Organisation,” and Toshiro Mifune as the head of the Japanese Racing Team called “Yamura.” The love interests are played by Eva Marie Saint, Jessica Walter and Francoise Hardy. James Garner himself said, “…[T]he story is pure soap opera.”1 Bosley Crowther, the movie critic for the New York Times, wrote, “[T]he big trouble with this picture …is that the characters and their romantic problems are stereotypes and clichés….” But he also said that the film was “a smashing and thundering compilation of racing footage shot superbly at the scenes of the big meets around the circuits….”2 Indeed, the film was awarded for its innovation and technical achievement in terms of cinematography. -
