Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, August 22, 2020 * The Boston Globe In Red Sox season-high third straight win, stars join forces on offense Alex Speier On a night when the Red Sox started a selloff of their pitchers as a point of departure in their moves to strengthen themselves for future seasons, the team’s lineup offered a reminder of what still remains. A pair of World Series ring holders, closer Brandon Workman and middle innings reliever Heath Hembree, were dealt to the Phillies — along with cash and either a player to be named or cash consideration — on Friday night. In exchange, the Sox received a pair of righthanders — Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold — with a chance to contribute as starters. The decision to deal away current contributors for a pair of pitchers who will report to Pawtucket gave a clear window into where the Red Sox are in their pursuit of a championship. Yet the backdrop against which the trade occurred offered its own form of evidence about the state of the team’s competitive ambitions. The Red Sox lineup once again shelled Orioles pitchers, opening up an 8-0 lead before withstanding a late- innings rally for an 8-5 win in Baltimore that gave the Sox their season-high third straight victory. The team’s three top hitters — Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, and J.D. Martinez — joined forces in a way rarely seen this year, but one that offered a reminder of an offense that still has tremendous potential. For Bogaerts, his homer off lefty John Means represented his second homer in as many games.

We are carrying on a charitable tradition that began decades ago when Hall of Famer Ted Williams began visiting Jimmy Fund patients, often before arriving at the ballpark just up the street. That philanthropic legacy has continued through the generations; picked up by Yaz and Andrews, Lynn and Evans, Tek and Wake. We are proud of the work accomplished in 2016, and the many contributions of our players to continue the legacy of giving, especially as we bid farewell to a player whose presence in the community was as powerful as his home runs.
