Nr.: 0025057 Kaiserstraße 86/2/14-15, A-1070 Wien Wien, am 24.03.2010 Kurzfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Kultur- und Architekturgeschichte der Farbe im und am Bau, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Farbverwendung in der Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Fokus dieser Ausarbeitung steht die Fragestellung, wie im Verlauf der Menschheitsentwicklung und später der Architekturgeschichte in historisch überlieferten Zeiten bis unmittelbar in die Gegenwart hinein die farbliche Gestaltung von Gebäuden und Häusern ästhetisch wie psychisch und physisch auf den Menschen einwirkt. Bislang ist die Farbgestaltung von architektonischen Gebilden noch nicht intensiv erforscht worden; diese Studie soll einen Beitrag zur Schließung dieser Forschungslücke liefern. Farbeffekte entstehen oft aus dem Kontrast zwischen dem Monochromen und dem Polychromen; dies wird u. a. an Beispielen aus dem 20. Jahrhundert exemplifiziert, wobei auch immer der Zusammenhang zwischen Farbgebung, Formgestaltung und Design betont wird. Ebenso wird im historischen Teil beschrieben, wie diese unterschiedlichen Gegensätze miteinander interagieren. Es ist Ziel dieser Arbeit, die Wirkungsweise dieser Interaktion detailliert zu analysieren. Als Ergebnis der Studie ist zu konstatieren, dass dann Farbkontraste am ehesten positive Auswirkungen auf die Psyche des Menschen ausüben, wenn zwar unterschiedlich verfahren wird, aber die Farbkontraste nicht als ästhetischer Selbstzweck betrachtet und damit übertrieben werden. Zu starke Gegensätze verunsichern eher und verkehren die positiven Effekte der Farbgestaltung auf die menschliche Psyche in ihr Gegenteil. Letzteres wirft die Frage auf, ob es Mindeststandards bei der Farbverwendung in der Architektur geben sollte; auf diese Fragestellung wird im Schlussteil dieses Werks gesondert eingegangen. Im Anhang ist zudem meine empirische Studie über die Wirkungen von Farben in Innenräumen auf die menschliche Psyche nachzulesen, wobei zu diesem Zweck Resultate der Wahrnehmungspsychologie summarisch referiert werden. Abstract The current project is a study about the role of colour and painting in architecture and its influence on human species. This involves the usage of colour concerning the interior design and outside concerning the cladding of buildings, but the focus is on the “outside aspects”. For this reason, this project deals with the cultural and architectural history of colour and painting, especially considering the usage of colour in the architecture of the 20th century. The main interest of the study is about the question, how in the history of the human species and later in the architectural history up to now the colour design of buildings and houses affects aesthetical, psychological and physical impressions on the human mind. Unfortunately, the colour design of architectural entities is hardly explored yet; this project intends to close this “exploration gap”. Colour effects are often originated by the contrast between the monochrome and the polychrome; this is shown f. e. at exemplars of colour design in the architecture of the 20th century. In this context, the relations between colour design and styling are accented. In the historical part, the several contrasts and how they interact with each other are described. The aim of this project is to analyse the effects of these contrasts between several colours and the dialectics of polychrome/monochrome. For this reason, the subjective, the autonomous and the analytical way of colour design in architecture are mentioned and investigated. A result of this study is, that colour contrasts have the most positive impacts on the psyche of the people, if there are contrasts, but are not seen as an end in itself in the eyes of the architects and the artists; in the latter case, they have a tendency toward exaggerations. Too strong contrasts make the recipients insecure; the positive effects cant over into the opposite. This implies the question, whether there must be minimum standards for the colour design in architecture. This question will be answered in the last part of this study. In the appendix of this study, you can find my study concerning the effects of colours in interior rooms on the human psyche; for this, the main results of the perception psychology are reported sweepingly.     Immersion Into Noise Critical Climate Change Series Editors: Tom Cohen and Claire Colebrook The era of climate change involves the mutation of systems beyond 20th century anthropomorphic models and has stood, until recent- ly, outside representation or address. Understood in a broad and critical sense, climate change concerns material agencies that im- pact on biomass and energy, erased borders and microbial inven- tion, geological and nanographic time, and extinction events. The possibility of extinction has always been a latent figure in textual production and archives; but the current sense of depletion, decay, mutation and exhaustion calls for new modes of address, new styles of publishing and authoring, and new formats and speeds of distri- bution. Although he had no formal training in art or architecture, Rodia used concrete-covered steel embellished with intricate mosaics of tile, shell, and glass to create a series of elaborate sculptures, including three central towers that rise nearly one hundred feet in height. For over three decades Rodia’s creation received scant public recognition, and in 1954 Rodia left Los Angeles, never to return. The story of how a single individual worked alone to create such a monumental structure is awe-inspiring; however, the life the site took on after Rodia’s departure is equally remarkable. In the postwar period California’s perceived provinciality relegated it to the fringes of the New York-centered art world.

    LANDSCAPES OF REVELATION: AN INQUIRY INTO SURREALISM IN THE LANDSCAPE by MICAH S. LIPSCOMB (Under the Direction of Judith Wasserman) ABSTRACT This thesis explores landscapes in which visitors can become emotionally and perceptually disoriented and imagine they are in a dream-like space. The surreal landscapes discussed range from an Italian Renaissance garden, to contemporary landscapes designed by professionals, to environments created by visionary artists. These diverse landscapes share elements of the art and literary movement of surrealism, especially their goal of eliciting revelations. The purpose of this thesis is three-fold: first, to analyze the techniques and forms that help create a surreal landscape; second, to elucidate the relationship between surrealism and landscape architecture; and third, to demonstrate the relevance of some of the ideas of surrealism to contemporary landscape architecture. Our fingers are typing this letter to invite you to contribute a text within the Art Work(ers) research project. We are thinking about how closing factories and the use of industrial ruins have affected our ways of working in the arts, and of the promises of creative economies. What narratives have been created to tell stories of art and industrial production as well as of deindustrialisation. Besides looking at historical examples such as EAT, Artist Placement Group, Equipo 57 & Grupo Y, Solidarnos & Ryszand Wasko, or Agricola Cornelia, whose work emerges in between art and (industrial) production modes, we are thinking of perruques (homers) and strategies to “reinterpret” the Taylorist use of machines with Situationist strategies. The question that we have in mind is less “why X has happened” but rather “why the alternatives Y did not take place”. Two sites have become particularly important during the research: Chippis (site of the former Aluminium factory, today Constellium) and Ivrea (site of the type- writing machine factory Olivetti).     DAVID PATRICK KELLY Outsider Architecture and Historic Preservation (Under the Direction of MARK EDWARD REINBERGER) Outsider architecture is a type of architecture that features unique designs made by builders with no formal training. Outsider architecture also functions as the physical/architectural manifestation of the ideology of its builder, which is more often than not “eccentric” by conventional standards. What constitutes outsider architecture is of issue in this thesis, as is the history of outsider architecture and the historic preservation movement that accompanies it. This thesis also suggests ways to improve the outsider architecture preservation situation, and to use outsider architecture as a tool in improving both social welfare and the built environment. The sketch, sandwiched between Salvador Dalí’s Mae West Lips Sofa (1938) (commissioned by James for Monkton House) and Leonora Carrington’s Sketches of the Sphinx (1966), firmly locates Artichoke House within the Surrealist idiom that was James’s life. My project started life as an idea for a mould of an object that never existed, taking inspiration from James’s original design for ‘Artichoke House’ and from the mould-making technique of ‘shuttering’ (wooden planks or strips used as a temporary structure to contain setting concrete) that James employed in the construction of his monumental concrete forms in Xilitla, Mexico. I developed a series of drawings playing on the idea that James’s design for ‘Artichoke House’ was the mould by which Xilitla was cast. As well as highlighting the role of Edward James as a significant contributor to the history of surrealist architecture, Artichoke House aims to explore how the pavilion in its many modes of existence—as idea, image and object—encourages us to see anew.

Là encore, j'ai travaillé huit années d'un dur labeur, j'ai eu le bonheur d'avoir la santé pour achever à l'âge de 86 ans le “Tombeau du Silence et du Repos sans fin” ». Ferdinand Cheval . Reconnaissance Au début des années 1930, Ferdinand Cheval reçoit le soutien moral de plusieurs artistes tels que Pablo Picasso et André Breton . Max Ernst qui séjourne en Ardèche durant l'occupation est fasciné par l'œuvre et lui dédie un de ses tableaux ( « Le Facteur Cheval »). André Malraux appuie la procédure de classement au titre des monuments historiques avant son départ du gouvernement ; il déclare pour sa part qu'il considère le Palais idéal comme « le seul représentant en architecture de l'art naïf (…) Il serait enfantin de ne pas classer quand c'est nous, Français, qui avons la chance de posséder la seule architecture naïve du monde et attendre qu'elle se détruise … » .

Since Dubuffet’s codification of Art Brut around 1945, the Outsider has been identified by cultural isolation, mental distance and a requisite discovery by some cultural insider, paternal or exploitative.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis explores Anaïs Nin’s idea of a synthesis of the arts in writing and its extension to different media through an analysis of her interdisciplinary collaborations with artists and composers in the United States of the 1950s and 1960s. I discuss these collaborations within the context of Nin’s unconventional understanding of the unconscious as multidimensional space and her interest in the sensory effects of different art forms, which are at the centre of Nin’s art theory. I look at the sources she drew on to formulate her ideas in Paris of the 1930s, including Symbolism, D.H. Lawrence’s writing, French Surrealism and various psychoanalytical models, and discuss how they relate to cultural and socio-political developments in America at mid-century. This includes a strong focus on Nin’s ambiguous negotiation of female identity and female creativity in her writing and the frictions it causes when it is translated into other media by her male collaborators. While Nin’s interest in different art forms and her attempt at imitating their sensuous effects in writing has been explored from a literary perspective, Nin’s extra-literary collaborations remain largely unexplored.
