Land Molluscs from the Northern Mariana Islands, Micronesia Taiji Kurozumi Natural History Museum and Institute, Chiba 955-2 Aoba-cho, Chuo-ku, Chiba 260, Japan Abstract More than twenty-four species of land molluscs, belonging to 13 families and 20 genera were collected from the 9 islands of the northern Mariana Islands, and 22 species are recorded for the first time from the islands. Six introduced species were recognized, including Achatina fulica and its predators, Euglandina rosea and Gonaxis kibweziensis. Almost all of the genera are widely distributed on Micronesian islands. Only one species, Ptychalaea sp., may show dispersal from the northern area to the northern Marianas. Key words: Land molluscs, Ptychalaea, Achatina fulica, northern Mariana Islands. A shallow earthquake swarm on Anatahan in March-April 1990 and reports of possible new fuming on Agrigan in August 1990 had prompted the evacuation of all CNMI islands north of Saipan. None of the volcanoes in the chain erupted during our visit. Five uninhabited islands (Farallon de Pajaros, Maug, Asuncion, Guguan, and Sarigan) were inspected only from the air, while the other four were studied in more detail. The previously installed seismic stations on Anatahan, Alamagan, and South Pagan were upgraded. A new station was established at the southwestern base of the intermittently active Mount Pagan, on the northern end of Pagan Island. -

While NDIC sought to incorporate the latest available information, a time lag often exists between collection and publication of data, particularly demand-related data sets. C. 20560 Since the publication of our Vascular Flora of the Northern Mariana Islands (Fosberg et al., 1975) further collections have been made in these islands by members of the University of Guam Expedition of 1975. These included a number of new island records and what seems to be Achyranthes aspera var. fruticosa, which is new to Micronesia. These are mostly listed below with the islands, localities, names of collectors, and collection numbers. The specimens cited are all deposited in the U. S. National Herbarium, Washington, D. C. Duplicates of most of them are in the Yap Institute of Science and may eventually be deposited in the herbarium of the University of Guam. A few specimens are still under study and will be re ported on later. Fifty-four island records are listed below, representing 50 species and varieties. Of these, five are specimens supporting previous sight records, and one is to support a nomenclatural correction. The others are believed to be plants not previously found on the islands indicated. Pagan Island, CNMI Volcanic Eruption Emergency Action Plan for Biological Survey Workers I. Introduction The "Marianas Expedition Wildlife Surveys 2010" (MEWS) is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) project funded by the Department of Defense – U.S. Marine Corps to gather information on fish and wildlife resources in the Mariana Islands, especially those species that are designated federally threatened or endangered. Micronesian megapode, Mariana fruit bat, and opportunistic seabird colony surveys will be conducted on nine islands (Anatahan, Sarigan, Guguan, Alamagan, Pagan, Agrihan, Asuncion, Maug and Uracas). Surveys on Pagan Island in addition to megapode, fruit bat and seabird colonies include reptiles, tree snails, insects, vegetation, and the near shore habitat including corals and marine fish. To facilitate these survey projects, temporary encampments will be established on five of the islands for logistical support. The primary base camp will be on Pagan Island (Figure 1) since it is centrally located and has an airplane landing strip. The base camp will be established on Pagan in May and maintained until early August. Fieldwork and data collection on Pagan will be conducted between May and July 2010 with peak activity in June and early July. Pagan has a small village area with 1 to 2 semi-permanent residents and minimal infrastructure. The camp on Pagan will consist of personal tents, a large, walled Army tent for cooking, portable 500-gallon fiberglass cisterns for water storage, ridge-hulled inflatable boats (RHIB), and small, portable toilets. The camp on Pagan will be staffed with a camp manager, a staff member from the CNMI Emergency Management Office (EMO), a single DOI MOCC trained boat operator for each ridge-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) and technicians familiar with Pagan to assist biologists.
