It also marks the second-straight season that Richmond has scored a defensive touchdown in a season opener as former Spider Dale Matthews Jr. scored one against Virginia last season. Freshman Debut . Freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler had a debut to remember in his first collegiate game of his career ... Wheeler led all Spiders with 12 tackles in the victory, ranking third in the Colonial Athletic Association in week one of action ... The 12 tackles are the most since Daniel Jones recorded 14 tackles last season against Elon ... It is also the most tackles in a season opener since Reggie Burnette and Aaron Roane each recorded 12 tackles against Virginia in 2012. Dual Threat Quarterback . Redshirt junior quarterback Joe Mancuso won the starting job during preseason camp and acquitted himself well in the season-opening win over Jacksonville ... Mancuso accounted for 208 yards of total offense against the Dolphins ... He connected on 14-of-19 through the air for 131 yards while rushing for a career-high 77 yards and two touchdowns ... His two touchdowns were also a career-high and became the field Spider quarterback with two rushing touchdowns in a game since former Spider and current Philadelphia Eagle Kyle Lauletta ran for two scores December 5, 2015 against William & Mary in the FCS Playoffs. Jim Reid is the current defensive ends coach for the Eagles and was the Richmond Spiders’ head coach for nine season from 1995-2003, recording a 48-53-1 record at the helm ...
