3 EDITORIAL

Welcome to the Autumn 2019 edition of the Chrishall Parish Council Newsletter. It is the first edition to be edited by Jane and myself.

Many thanks go to the retiring editor Stephen Foote who has diligently and successfully edited the newsletter over the last seven years.

We have decided to print a full colour picture on the front cover which will change each quarter. The picture will be a scene from Chrishall or with Chrishall relevance and will have a seasonal theme to it. Please email your pictures or drawings in JPEG format for consideration.

Also it has been suggested that we might change the name of the newsletter, and would welcome ideas from parishioners. Email [email protected] with your suggestions please.

We welcome articles from villagers, which will be subject to editorial review. The next copy deadline for the Winter 2019 newsletter will be 14th November 2019. Email [email protected] .

Many thanks, as always, to all our contributors.

Jane and Philip Gravett

CHRISHALL COMMUNITY LIBRARY

After much thought and soul-searching we have had to make the very difficult decision to discontinue our section of non-fiction books. We have completely run out of shelf space, and because we want to maintain the excellent fiction section we feel we have no choice. This will give us much needed shelf space to accept more books for our lending section.

Consequently we are holding three book sales, which will take place on Saturdays from 2:00 to 4:00pm in the Brand Pavilion on the following dates:

14th September cookery and gardening books 12th October travel and art books 9th November biography and autobiography books

Other sales will no doubt follow depending on what books we have left. All proceeds (and we hope, DONATIONS), will go to ADDENBROOKE'S CHARITABLE TRUST in support of the hospital we all have need to use from time to time.

With grateful thanks and in anticipation, Barbara Smith.

5 GARDENING CLUB

A meeting was held in the Brand Pavilion, Chrishall on Thursday 1st August to gauge the level of interest in a monthly gardening club in the village.

Lots of ideas were put forward for activities, talks and visits that could be arranged.

It was decided that the club would take place on the fourth Tuesday of every month (excluding December and August) at 7:30pm.

The first meeting will be held in the Village Hall on Tuesday, 24th September when we will agree a plan for the coming months, taste some seasonal produce, and recommend recipes for surplus fruit and veg.

Everyone is welcome to come along, whether an experienced gardener or a beginner with a plot to tame.

GETTING HELP WITH DEMENTIA Through Uttlesford Frontline

Alzheimer's Society research shows that many people worry about "saying the wrong" thing to people living with dementia. And despite almost all of us knowing someone affected, two thirds of people living with dementia report feeling isolated and lonely.

That's why the primary aim of Dementia Action Week in May was to encourage everyone to take action - by starting a conversation with someone we know who's living with dementia. It could be a relative, a friend or a neighbour. But whoever it is, it's definitely time to start talking. Even a chat about the weather could make a difference.

Getting out and about is also beneficial: whether to a dementia cafe, special cinema screenings, a pub lunch or taking part in an exercise programme. But if you're involved with someone living with dementia just how can you track down what help is available in the community? Who can provide the right advice and information? And, importantly, who can you trust?

Help is at hand, thankfully, through a simple-to-use website developed by Uttlesford Citizens Advice - www.uttlesfordfrontline.org.uk. Just enter 'dementia' in the search box to browse through some 40 services available locally, descriptions of what they do and how to get in touch. You can also access a resource sheet compiled by Saffron Walden Dementia Action Alliance.

www.uttlesfordfrontline.org.uk enables one-stop access to more than 130 organisations in Uttlesford who can provide help, support and information - with full contact details. Information is listed under: Advice; Family; Older People; Mental Health; Transport; Disability; Addiction; Well-Being. Frontline is also available as an app for mobile devices.

'Frontline' is a project developed and operated by and/ or on behalf of Uttlesford Citizens Advice.

Open Door continues to be well supported which is excellent news. However, in view of the large attendance, we are now requesting those who know they will definitely be there, to contact Jenny Rodda the week before each session. This will give the caterers a rough idea of numbers while ensuring that there is always enough food for those who decide to come on the spur of the moment.

Many guests have lent a hand by putting out extra tables when needed, clearing tables or washing up, and this has been a great help to the caterers. Thank you to you all for sharing some of the chores.

Some good news: we were given a very good report from the health and safety team who inspected us in March.

The dates for the year are as follows: 2nd Sept, 7th Oct, 4th Nov, 2nd Dec, 6th Jan 2020, 3rd Feb, 2nd Mar, 6th Apr, 11th May and 1st June.

The Christmas party is on 2nd December. It is for regular attenders and people need to inform Jenny Rodda if they intend to be there. We look forward to sharing many more lunches with you all.

9 SOCIETY www.hundredparishes.org.uk

Almost every parish within the Hundred Parishes has a church of great antiquity. Each one is different. The most notable external feature is often the tower, erected originally to house a bell or set of bells, raised high so their sound would travel above the surrounding rooftops to summon parishioners to prayer or for a special occasion. Almost all our church towers are square with just two being round: Bardfield Saling and Bartlow.

Some churches have a spire, usually extending upwards from the square tower base and tapering to a point. The combination of tower and spire may be called a steeple. The shapes of spires vary greatly; tall and thin styles are often referred to as ‘ spikes’ although they are not confined to Hertfordshire. The tallest local steeples are at Saffron Walden (193 feet) and Thaxted (181 feet).

A few churches have a bellcote, where one or two bells hang in a small frame above one end of the roof. Several of these were erected to replace a collapsed bell tower. Wimbish seems to be our only parish church with no tower, spire or bellcote, following the demolition of its tower in 1883.

High Roding Church with bellcote

10 A few churches have unusual towers or spires including Little Dunmow’s separate thin turret, Wareside’s octagonal bell tower and High Wych’s thin circular spire. The spires of two churches in adjacent parishes, Ickleton and Hinxton, each have a ‘sanctus’ bell, high up on the outside of the spire - an uncommon design feature.

Sawbridgeworth - Great St Mary's with Hertfordshire spike

Next time you are out and about, please keep an eye open for the rich variety of local church architecture. A picture of each parish church appears amongst the thousand photos in the Society’s book, The Hundred Parishes: An Introduction, available in tourist information centres and libraries.

CHRISHALL CRICKET CLUB

Having at last got a good solid team together it is disappointing that we have had 3 clubs cancel due to their lack of players and 1 fixture rained off. Hopefully next year more fixtures will be completed.

The last game of the year is THE PUB MATCH on 1st September, 3pm start. Barbecue and beer will be available with all donations going to the cricket club and school. All welcome. For player info please contact Lucas on 07545 233939 or 01763 837309.

11 CONFESSIONS OF A COMPOSER An audience with John Rutter

“I’ve known I wanted to be a musician ever since I could walk and talk!” Join us for this rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s greatest living composers, John Rutter, talk about his journey through music and to sample his body of work. John’s music has featured prominently in many British royal occasions, including the two most recent royal weddings. And with his professional chamber choir, The Cambridge Singers, he has made over fifty recordings, but the tally of albums performed by other choirs and orchestras, particularly in the United States, runs into the many hundreds.

John’s shorter pieces such as The Lord bless you and keep you and For the beauty of the earth, have become global standards. And his larger choral works - Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, The Gift of Life and Visions - are also widely performed around the world. But for many, he will forever be associated with his exquisite composition and arrangements of Christmas carols.

The audience is on Wednesday 16 October at Holy Trinity, Chrishall. Full details of how to obtain tickets are shown on the back page.

WILLIAM WALTER BRAND TRUST We Gave Away over £30,000

As a village we are very fortunate to have the Brand Trust which gave grants of over £31,000 this year to people in the parish of Chrishall.

The trust was set up in 1994 under the will of Mr William Walter Brand, a Chrishall farmer. The capital is invested and produces an income of about £23,000 pa.

We make grants for lots of different things such as:- the Heating Allowance, please apply on the form opposite, grants for educational purposes, including transport costs and a £200 grant for those starting

12 secondary school to help pay for uniform etc, help to pay for the Care Line, stair lifts, anything in the house to make life easier for those who need it. We are always looking for new ways to help people so please let me or any of the trustees know about your ideas.

It’s important that we include all the people who need the grants so if you know anybody that needs help or you need it for yourself, then please contact any of the trustees in complete confidence.

Some people are shy in coming forward and feel they are too proud as they see it as charity. We appreciate their sentiments but this money has been left for the specific purpose of supporting local people in need and it would be a great pity for someone to suffer hardship when a friendly helping hand is available.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Parish Council meetings for 2019: First Tuesday of the month in the Village Hall 3rd September, 1st October, 5th November.

Parish Council vacancy: Councillors Foote, Kay, Pitfield and Rackham resigned in June. The Parish Council thanks them all for their contributions across the years and wishes them well for the future.

We now have four vacancies. If you believe that you have skills which will benefit the community, please contact the Clerk for an application form.

Dog waste: Dog waste continues to be a problem so please do pick it up.

Defibrillator: The defibrillator is in a cabinet on the outside of the Village Hall.

Bonfires: Please do consider your neighbours and restrict lighting bonfires to early evening. A better option is to use the green bin scheme provided by Uttlesford District Council which will take all green garden waste.

Health & Welfare: The PC has the opportunity to host a mental health training event. If you would like to attend please contact the Clerk.

14 Swap and Share, Give and Take: If you have surplus produce, please take it to the bus shelter in Palmers Lane near the school entrance to swap and share with other villagers.

The Pavilion: The Pavilion User Group (PUGS) are going from strength to strength and the PC wishes to thank all members for their hard work and commitment to make this small space work as an inclusive area for the provision of small groups working to alleviate isolation and reduce loneliness. The members are working to achieve grant funding and have also provided donations towards utility costs. Many of the groups are small numerically, and cannot afford to rent bigger facilities.

Village Meeting: This will be arranged for a date in October. Organisations will be asked to provide an update on their activities, and speakers have been invited.

If you have a question you wish to ask the PC, please do put it in writing for a considered response two weeks in advance of the meeting.

Keeping in touch with your Parish Council

As well as the traditional noticeboards located around the village and this quarterly newsletter, the PC is investing time in new ways to share information about village initiatives, events and meetings. The Parish Council website has now been updated and includes forthcoming events as well as a range of other useful information. You can find us at www.chrishallpc.org.uk. A Facebook page has been launched at 'Chrishall Parish Council' and we welcome contributions via all and any of these channels.

YOUR VILLAGE HALL – latest news

You will probably have noticed by now the solar panels which were fitted to the roof of the south hall at the beginning of August. These are linked to a battery to store any surplus electricity generated and they should result in significant savings in our running costs.

The Committee is most grateful to the Charles S French Charitable Trust and to Uttlesford District Council’s Community Project Grant scheme for their grant funding support. However, the installation has been made possible by an anonymous donation from a pair of local donors, to whom particular thanks are due.

The annual boiler service in May resulted in the sad news that the boiler was on its last legs, so the Committee arranged tenders for its replacement and a new one was installed in August by local business Phoenix Partnership Ltd.

It is now over five years since the village took possession of the former Methodist chapel and hall. Unsurprisingly, the premises needed a lick of

17 paint and redecoration is due to take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The Committee would like to thank villager David Burrows for his efforts and we hope that users will appreciate the refreshed appearance of the halls.

The replacement boiler and the redecoration were funded in part by 100 Club contributions and we are grateful to the Club members for their continuing support, without which we would have struggled to complete these improvements, as we have severely depleted our reserves.

To book the Village Hall for your party or other event, visit www.chrishallvillagehall.co.uk, select the Current Bookings page and check that the hall you require is available. If it is, click on the ‘+’ sign for the event day and follow the online instructions.

Richard Keeling–[email protected]. Secretary to Chrishall Village Hall Committee. Charity no. 301281

Both the south hall and chapel hall of the Village Hall are available to all for a modest fee and they are popular with our local community. Chrishall Parish Council purchased the Village Hall premises from the Methodists in June 2014 using a Government loan, which is being repaid by parishioners over 35 years through the parish precept, a small part of the council tax bill.

The loan was purely for the purchase, while maintenance of the premises is funded entirely separately. In broad terms, the Village Hall Committee looks after the interior and the day to day running costs, while the Parish Council is responsible for the exterior and the grounds. Major items of expenditure depend on grant awards while other payments are made from funds available to the Committee, which have been seriously depleted recently, particularly for the boiler replacement.

The “100” Club was set up to boost the reserves so that we can pay all our bills while keeping hire fees affordable. Although initially well supported, the current membership has fallen to under 50 paid-up members. The draw entrance fee is £36 annually and roughly half the fee is returned through prize money. In the last four years the Club has paid out £3,680 in prizes. We would urge those who can afford it to join the Club and help to support your Village Hall.

The winners for the August draw were: 1st Prize Stephen Ryan 2nd Prize Richard Keeling 3rd Prize Emmah Duffus
