    Roorkee Diary Anil K Rajvanshi Phaltan, Maharashtra, India [email protected] 1. I was invited in March to IIT Roorkee to be the chief guest at the inaugural session of Cognizance 2014. This is billed by them as the largest techfest in India. Last year I had been invited to give a guest lecture at Techkriti – the premier tech festival at IIT Kanpur. They had also billed it as the largest techfest in India. So all the IITs have to get together to decide whose techfest is really the largest! 2. The fastest way to reach Roorkee is to fly into Jolly Grant (JG) airport in Dehradun and then drive to Roorkee. The JG airport is a small airport recently refurbished and the distance of 66 Km to Roorkee is covered in 2 hours! This is because the roads are absolutely horrible with huge potholes and being single lane with heavy truck and bus traffic. 3. This was my third visit to Roorkee – the first was in 1973 when as a student of IIT Kanpur I had presented a paper on solar energy at the national solar energy conference in Roorkee University (it became IIT only recently). My remembrance of that visit was that Roorkee was a small place and we could go any place in town on a cycle rickshaw. Now it is a growing town with city buses and other modes of motorized transport. The second visit, just for a day, was in the 1990s to attend an MNES workshop. 4. IIT Roorkee campus is small, compact and a nice one.

Students enjoy the learning experience best when they are challenged. I have often interacted with students, asking them what they thought was the best or worst in a class that they had just attended. And I have often been stumped by their replying that they thought they had “learnt nothing”. Why? I asked them. They said that they did not find the teaching challenging enough. This should leave no one in doubt that we should take another look at the teaching and learning process. Students themselves can be a part of this relook. I have often advocated for student-teachers, often letting them take my own class. The result has been phenomenal, making students involved learners. Only greater involvement on the part of students can ensure their learning. This does not have to happen inside the class always. Sports, extra-curricular activities provide their own challenges. I encourage students to take up these challenges. As these entries show, many of them have indeed taken them up, and realized their enormous potential and talent. Tap your hidden talents and energies. Take up challenges, get involved and enjoy the learning experience Every student is an achiever in his or her own right. The EoI submission deadline is June 8, 2018. The project will be developed on a build, own, operate, and transfer model under RESCO model. IIT Kharagpur will provide the requisite land, rooftop, and parking shed for the deployment of solar PV systems. Bidders who have a minimum of five-year experience in the field of design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning and operation of a 4.4 MW solar PV project, two 3.3 MW projects, or three 2.2 MW solar PV projects or similar can participate. With this move, IIT Kharagpur joins other educational institutions who are making the move to generate their own clean power. Recently, Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Uttarakhand’s Pantnagar town tendered a 5 MW grid-connected rooftop solar PV project. In June 2017, Jamia Millia Islamia, a reputed government college, tendered a 2.25 MW (AC) solar PV project to be developed under a RESCO model at Jamia Millia Islamia University premises in Delhi. In the same month, Mercom also reported that Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited (REIL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan, tendered 950 kW of grid-connected rooftop solar to be developed on top of buildings owned by Rajasthan University in Jaipur.
