Teachers’ Notes Researched and Compiled by Michele Chigwidden Teacher’s Notes Adelaide Festival Centre has contributed to the development and publication of these teachers’ notes through its education program, CentrED. Brink Productions’ by Molière A new adaptation by Paul Galloway Directed by Chris Drummond INTRODUCTION Le Malade imaginaire or The Hypochondriac by French playwright Molière, was written in 1673. Today Molière is considered one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature and his work influences comedians and dramatists the world over1. This play is set in the home of Argan, a wealthy hypochondriac, who is as obsessed with his bowel movements as he is with his mounting medical bills. Argan arranges for Angélique, his daughter, to marry his doctor’s nephew to get free medical care. The problem is that Angélique has fallen in love with someone else. Meanwhile Argan’s wife Béline (Angélique’s step mother) is after Argan’s money, while their maid Toinette is playing havoc with everyone’s plans in an effort to make it all right. Molière’s timeless satirical comedy lampoons the foibles of people who will do anything to escape their fear of mortality; the hysterical leaps of faith and self-delusion that, ironically, make us so susceptible to the quackery that remains apparent today. Brink’s adaptation, by Paul Galloway, makes Molière’s comedy even more accessible, and together with Chris Drummond’s direction, the brilliant ensemble cast and design team, creates a playful immediacy for contemporary audiences. These teachers’ notes will provide information on Brink Productions along with background notes on the creative team, cast and a synopsis of The Hypochondriac. -

Andrews is making a highly anticipated return to Belvoir to direct his own play, Every Breath, for its world premiere. Andrews has created dozens of thrilling productions in an internationally successful career. He has been the recipient of numerous Best Director awards, both in Sydney and Europe. As well as Every Breath, Andrews‟ The Marriage of Figaro for Opera Australia is now playing at the Sydney Opera House, Gross und Klein (Sydney Theatre Company) is set to tour Europe, and his production of Caligula opens in May at the English National Opera. Despite such an international focus, Andrews relishes the opportunity to return to Belvoir. „I always enjoy returning to Belvoir,‟ he says. „I love the theatre‟s special intimacy… I‟m very pleased that Every Breath will come into the world there…‟ Every Breath features a stellar cast. Popular screen actor John Howard returns to the Sydney stage for the first time in over a decade, alongside Angie Milliken, who also returns to the Sydney theatre scene for the first time in nearly as long. Shelly Lauman (As You Like It) treads the Belvoir boards once again and is joined by Eloise Mignon (The Wild Duck) and Dylan Young (The Seagull). -

We are constantly inspired by stories of endurance and determination – stories that tell of stamina, fearlessness and survival which are set against a backdrop of natural disasters, war and terrorism; often in the face of adversity, in the likelihood of self-endangerment and despite the odds. An interview on Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope with Gill Hicks, a survivor of the 7 July 2005 London bombings is one such story; a story that struck a particular chord with Brink Productions’ Artistic Director, Chris Drummond, and started a wonderful collaboration that went internationally to involve English writer, Bryony Lavery and a co-production between Brink Productions and English Touring Theatre. Thursday goes beyond a simple tale of survival and deeper than the confronting reality of television news footage. To create such a story and then realise it on the stage is an achievement that the team of Chris Drummond (AU director/dramaturg), Bryony Lavery (UK writer), Dan Potra (AU set designer), Colin Grenfell (UK lighting designer), Kay Jamieson (AU Producer) and Jane Claire (UK Producer) have accomplished as a result of a theatrical process that began in 2009. The team has worked closely through the stages of writing, creative development and workshops, to the final draft/rehearsal script by May 2012. The staging of this play, with its compelling story, music and design, combine to give its audience an awe inspiring experience. Thursday, takes reference from the remarkable story of Gill Hicks’ survival and begins by taking us on the journey of nine characters as they start their working day, no different from any other day, unaware of how in a wink of the eye, a click of fingers or a flash of light, their lives are irrevocably changed. -

His productions have been presented by most major theatre companies in Australia. Credits include Memorial, Ancient Rain, Long Tan, Tartuffe, The Aspirations of Daise Morrow, Thursday, Land & Sea, Skip Miller’s Hit Songs, Harbinger, The Hypochondriac, When the Rain Stops Falling, Beetle Graduation, The Clockwork Forest, This Uncharted Hour and Drums in the Night. Chris’ production of When the Rain Stops Falling won multiple awards including 2010 ACT Green Room Award – Production; 2009 Sydney Theatre Awards: Best New Australian Work; 2009 Victorian Green Room Awards (Production, Set Design, Lighting Design, New Writing for Stage); and 2008 Ruby Award (Best Work). Chris was Associate Director at the State Theatre Company of South Australia between 2000 and 2004 and his credits include Babyteeth, Art, The Dying Gaul, The Merchant of Venice, drowning in my ocean of You and Night Letters. Other directing credits include The Flying Dutchman for the State Opera Company of South Australia (Helpmann Award nomination for best direction) and a devised work entitled The Dissolving Self for NIDA in association with Brink and Carriageworks. Rosemary Myers, Artistic Director, Windmill Theatre Under Rose’s leadership as Artistic Director, Windmill creates and presents work inspired by the vibrancy, sophistication and inventiveness of young people and the exhilarating challenges they pose to creating theatre of relevance in this modern time. Rose is a multi-Helpmann Award nominated director, her productions regularly visit leading stages and festivals around Australia and the world, including the Sydney Opera House, Hong Kong’s Arts and Leisure Centre and New York’s New Victory Theatre.
