  • 1 Visitors' Memories of Wildlife Tourism
Visitors’ memories of wildlife tourism: Implications for the design of powerful interpretive experiences Tourism Management (2011), 32, 4, 770-779. Roy Ballantynea, Jan Packera and Lucy A. Sutherlanda1 The University of Queensland, School of Tourism University of Queensland, 4072 Australia Abstract One of the aims of wildlife tourism is to educate visitors about the threats facing wildlife in general, and the actions needed to protect the environment and maintain biodiversity. To identify effective strategies to achieve this aim, this paper examines participants’ memories of their wildlife tourism experiences and explores processes through which such experiences can lead to long-term changes in conservation behaviour. Findings are based on 240 visitors’ extended open-ended responses to a follow-up web survey administered approximately four months after a visit to one of four marine- based wildlife tourism venues in South-East Queensland. Qualitative analysis revealed four levels of visitor response to the experience, implying a process involving what visitors actually saw and heard (Sensory Impressions), what they felt (Emotional Affinity), thought (Reflective Response), and finally what they did about it (Behavioural Response). Recommendations are provided for ways tourism managers and wildlife interpreters can maintain and strengthen these dimensions of memorable experiences in order to enhance visitor satisfaction and encourage visitors’ long-term adoption of environmentally sustainable practices. 1. Introduction The sustainable development of the tourism industry has been the topic of much debate in the last two decades (Cater and Goodall, 1992; Duffy, 2002; Holden, 2000; Honey, 1999; Sharpley, 2000; Smith and Eadington, 1992) and this period has seen significant improvements and greater investment in a more sustainable industry through, for example, efforts in tourism standards (Koeman, Worboys, De Lacy, Scott and Lipman, 2002) and guides to good practice (World Tourism Organization, 2000).

(Human Geography) Urban Research Program Griffith School of Environment Science, Environment, Engineering and Technology Griffith University Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2012 Abstract ABSTRACT Water security has emerged as a significant international concern in recent decades. Climate change, rapid urbanisation, and burgeoning global tourism are compounding water provision problems in many countries. Australia and China are two examples. The driest inhabited continent on Earth, Australia has recently experienced its worst drought in recorded history. The nation is also dealing with high urban population growth. Residents’ water demands are heightened by large numbers of tourists. China is the world’s largest fresh water consumer. Although China has many fresh water sources, rapid economic growth, unprecedented rates of urbanisation, and a burgeoning tourism industry are impacting water security. Paradoxically, both countries also have a thriving water-based theme park industry. Theme parks are a major element in global tourism and exact heavy environmental impacts, especially upon water resources.

  • Queensland, Australia Destination Guide
Queensland, Australia Destination Guide Overview of Queensland Queensland, situated in the northeast corner of Australia, is the country's holiday playground, attracting visitors all year round. It is known as the 'Sunshine State', and the major attraction is the incredible underwater world provided off its coastline along the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef is a UNESCO-listed marine park that stretches for more than 1,250 miles (2,000km) along the Queensland coast, home to one of the most diverse animal and plant ecosystems on earth, and is dotted with idyllic island resorts. Queensland is also home to four other UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites at Riversleigh, the Wet Tropics of Queensland, the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, and Fraser Island. Further south, beyond Brisbane, the coastline is known as the Gold Coast. Here visitors can swim and surf all year round at 35 patrolled beaches along the 45 miles (70km) of coastline. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland, while Cairns, in the tropical north, is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Brisbane boasts some world-class attractions too, such as the iconic Story Bridge and the oldest and largest koala sanctuary in the world, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where lucky visitors can feed, pet and hold the lovable koalas. Travellers should be aware that especially during the summer months (usually between October and May) the shallow coastal waters of Queensland become infested with marine stingers, commonly known as box jellyfish, whose sting is highly dangerous and can be deadly. Many beaches offer protected swimming with stinger nets in place, or enclosed tidal pools, and surf lifesavers may warn people off infested beaches.
