Merely 263 miles long, one can drive from its northernmost point to the southernmost one in six hours, passing by a wide variety of landscapes and climates; from the snowy capes of Mount Hermon to the arid badlands of the Negev Desert. Along the way, she might come across a plethora of ethnic and religious groups – Jews originating in dozens of diasporas all over the world, Palestinians, Druze, Bedouins, Bahá'ís, Samaritans, Circassians, Armenians, Gypsies, Filipinos, Sudanese, Eritreans, and more – and hear innumerable languages and dialects. From the haredi stronghold of Bene-Beraq to the hedonistic nightclubs and sunny beaches of Eilat; from a relative Jewish-Arab coexistence in Haifa to the powder keg that is East Jerusalem; from the “Start-up Nation” in Ra’anana and Herzliya to the poverty-stricken “development towns” and unrecognized Bedouin settlements of the Negev; from the messianic fervor of Jewish settlers in the West Bank to the plight of African refugees and disadvantaged Jews in South Tel Aviv – all within an area slightly smaller than the State of Vermont. This is an introductory survey of Israel’s political, diplomatic, social, economic, ethnic, and cultural history, as well as an overview of Israeli society nowadays.     THE ISRAEL/PALESTINE QUESTION The Israel/Palestine Question assimilates diverse interpretations of the origins of the Middle East conflict with emphasis on the fight for Palestine and its religious and political roots. Drawing largely on scholarly debates in Israel during the last two decades, which have become known as ‘historical revisionism’, the collection presents the most recent developments in the historiography of the Arab-Israeli conflict and a critical reassessment of Israel’s past. NAHUM KARLINSKY [email protected] Office hours: Elie Wiesel Center (147 Bay State Road), Room 502 Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30-3:30 pm; or by appointment The object of this course is to study the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, examining its origins, its major historical milestones, and the different narratives and perceptions of the conflict, viewed from the perspective of Palestinians and Israelis. We will also explore the conditions that may bring about a resolution to the conflict and reconciliation between the parties. Theoretical and comparative approaches, derives from conflict resolution and reconciliations studies, will inform our discussion. A broad array of genres and modes of expression – not only academic writings, but also literature, popular music, film, posters, documentaries, and the like – will be incorporated into this class. The course will combine lectures, classroom discussions, student presentations and in- class small group projects. We will end our course by staging an Israeli-Palestinian peace conference. He is the author of several books, including Ivory Towers on Sand: The Failure of Middle East Studies in America, and The War on Error: Israel, Islam, and the Middle East, which has just been released by Transaction Publishers. Kramer is not only a distinguished scholar of the Middle East who writes with an eye to the past as well as the present (and future), but also a gifted prose stylist. Indeed, he’s one of my favorite writers. Whenever he publishes an article or essay— even a blog post!—I rush to read it, for the information, worldview, wit, intelligence, and sheer pleasure of Kramer’s prose. I’m lucky to call him a friend, and recently had the opportunity to speak with him about his new book, the Middle East, Israel, and America, the Ari Shavit affair and other matters. Lee Smith: The title of your new book, The War on Error, signals your campaign against a long history of our misunderstanding the Middle East. What’s the worst, or biggest, misconception Americans have about the Middle East? Martin Kramer: We saw the great American illusion at work in the Iraq war and the “Arab Spring.” Americans tend to assume that everyone wants democracy, and that more democracy is the solution for dysfunctional parts of the world.

Issues concerning the period of statehood will include ethnicity, secular-religious divides and the notion of a Jewish - democratic state. The class will be heavily based on student reading and participation. It is designed to confront some of the critical issues being raised by Jews and non-Jews in the US and Europe today. Course Requirements Students are expected to attend regularly and participate in class discussion. Please consult the Handbook of Academic Procedure if you are uncertain as to the attendance policy. Students are expected to keep abreast of the reading. In order to create an appropriate learning environment it is essential that you complete the reading assigned for each class which is approximately fifty pages per session. This is a cross-campus class and the overall group is split into two Forum groups. The groups will alternate each week posting to a threaded discussion on the guiding question for that week. Instructions and requirements can be found under Forums on the Course site in Sakai.     Anita Shapira Hirbet Hizah Between Remembering and Forgetting Woe to the generation that has to commit the acts of “Hizah” and flees the pain of their recounting. —Ephraim Kleiman Memory—what, how, and when we remember—continues to fascinate scholars. It is elusive, complex, and difficult to define. Collective memory sits at the divide between the conscious and the subliminal, acknowledg- ment and denial, history and psychology. Currently in vogue is the con- struct of a “usable past”: collective memory as a product of national- cultural manipulation, which embeds those portions of the past that reinforce society’s self-image and foster its interests and agendas. This con- ception rejects the notion of spontaneous processes at work in the for- mation of collective memory. But if conscious intent does shape memory, who are its agents? What are their tools? In democracies, moreover, there is never one single guiding hand. How does the open arena of conflicting interests impact on memory’s configuration? When is a particular event stamped in memory? What processes catalyze its fixing; what forces act to submerge it? If the “usable past” ministers to present interests, what hap- pens to past segments that do not serve current goals? Are they relegated to oblivion? Or do past and present interact dynamically, transforming memory as changing circumstances impact on public consciousness? Memory confounds historical consciousness. The gray area between consciousness and memory is especially evident when dealing with top- ics hard to face, such as the departure/flight/removal/expulsion of Arabs in Israel’s War of Independence. This essay deals with changing represen- tations of the past and the interrelation of memory and reality.
