The main track, A, has no remix name, but is almost identical to the version on the CD Infected that is named (12" Version) - the difference being that the version on this releases has an added pilot radio conversation at the end. A is noted as "swing wing", and B as "fixed wing". Durations do not appear on release. Pressed in 7,500 copies. This pressing of "Sweet Bird of Truth" was the first single from "Infected", but it's release coincided with the US bombing of Libya where an American pilot was shot down, and CBS were unwilling to release and promote it. It ended up as a low-key release that was deleted on the day of release. Aitken Department of Geography, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-4493, e-mail: [email protected] James Craine Department of Geography, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-4493, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper is about intense emotions -- lust, desire, pain, longing, passion, anger, frustration – as they are expressed in the alternative rock music of Matt Johnson and contrived in our listening experiences. The “soundscapes” Johnson creates with the various musicians who comprise his band The The are at times ironic, at times contradictory and as often as not darkly situated on the underbelly of seeming human frailties. With this paper, we draw on Johnson’s work and art to articulate themes of male heterosexual desire and lust, and their relations to aspects of identity. We argue that Johnson uses lust and desire to particular effect, creating an “emotional geography” from which potentially liberatory social relations may emerge. We argue that Johnson’s work is a plea to place male emotions more centrally in our ways of knowing the world. Much of Johnson’s inspiration derives from a quirky understanding of the impact of global forces on the lives of individuals. It also offers a different way of knowing masculinity, one that embraces realities such as promiscuity and prostitution without judgement, treating them simultaneously as material, emotional and spatial. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.

    Previous Page Colin Lloyd Tucker talks to Helen Mann, summer 2004. To call Colin Lloyd Tucker reclusive would be an understatement. I have known him many years having interviewed him for the local rag in 1979. Yet in all that time I have witnessed less than a dozen live shows and have enjoyed even fewer more intimate meetings. We last met seven years ago at his island home ‘Valhalla’, an unforgettable experience for me. Following a hair-raising boat ride we spent the day lying in the sun, drinking wine and talking music. The feel of this beautiful, isolated place has remained with me and if you have heard his Life, Love and Liquid album, you too may feel you have been there. In the meantime Colin, having been there and done that has now moved back to the mainland. He is still a stones throw from the sea though, only this time he is surrounded by strawberry fields and plum trees. Miles away from anywhere or anyone. I got hopelessly lost trying to find him! As I stepped out of my car I was immediately struck by the wonderful aroma of the ripe fruit that drifted on the air and mingled with the salty sea breezes. I could feel London being washed from my lungs. Colin waves a greeting from his doorstep and offers a cup of tea, it being “a bit early for anything stronger”. Sure, he looks a little older (don’t we all) but the smiles as warm as ever and he looks lean and healthy.
