Yrene KCC New Head Pro Release FINAL KANKAKEE COUNTRY CLUB NAMES YRENE HEAD PROFESSIONAL Former Scottsdale Golf Club Professional To Lead KCC during 100th Year KANKAKEE, IL October 27, 2015 - Don Yrene, who won the trophy for Low Club Professional at the 2006 PGA Championship, has been named Head Golf Professional at Kankakee Country Club, in Kankakee, Illinois. The announcement was made by Green Golf Partners, which manages Kankakee Country Club and 15 other golf courses across the United States. Yrene brings a blend of accomplishments in competitive professional golf to Kankakee as the club begins celebrating its centennial year. He was most recently PGA Head Professional at Scottsdale Golf Club.     THE GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTS OF PARK RIDGE The Story of the men who shaped the Park Ridge Country Club Golf Course PREFACE When the game of golf and its golf courses had their beginnings in the United States in the late 1800s, there was no such thing as a golf course architect per se. Virtually all of those who “laid out” the rudimentary courses on which the game was played were players of the game, some professional and some amateur, and they continued in the dual role of player-designer. It wasn’t until the second decade of the 20th century that golf course design began to separate itself as a singular career, a career that blossomed into the glorious title of golf course architect in the “Golden Age” of the 1920s. The primary designers (architects) of the Park Ridge Country Club golf course followed the early pattern. H.J. Tweedie was both an active player and course designer until his untimely death in 1906. Tom Bendelow was the first to emphasize course design over playing as he traversed the country laying out courses. In 1918, William Langford became the first Park Ridge architect to form his own course design firm. David Esler was formally educated in landscape architecture. He interrupted an early career as a golf course architect to take a stab at professional golf, but quickly returned to form a course design company. The objective of this document is to provide additional information about the careers of the course architects who formed today’s Park Ridge golf course.

Established in 1904, East Lake is the oldest golf course in the city of Atlanta. It was the home course of golfer Bobby Jones and much of its clubhouse serves as a tribute to his accomplishments. During the mid to late 1800s, the United States was experiencing an unprecedented growth in the interest of sports, especially amateur sports. At the time, Atlanta did offer many social clubs, but there was no club organized for the purpose of promoting athletics. Led by Burton Smith, a group of 65 men formed the Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC) in 1898. The club initially had no golf course, but four years after it was founded, it had more than 700 members.

    A SCOTTISH GOLF PIONEER DEVELOPS THE WEST IN AMERICA GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT WILLIAM WATSON 1860-1941 By Dean Knuth William Watson Circa 1920 at age 60 William Watson was an early pioneer in golf course architecture who immigrated from Fife, Scotland to America in 1898. In a successful career he had designed more than 100 golf courses by his retirement in 1929 when the Great Depression began. Many golfers know of Donald Ross and Alister Mackenzie but haven’t heard of Watson, yet many of his courses have survived close to a century or more. Minikahda Club in Minnesota was his first U.S. design and also his first job as head golf professional. He was prolific and a success in California. A number of his other best-known designs have hosted major USGA and PGA National Championships, including Harding Park, San Diego Country Club, the original Brentwood Country Club, Diablo Country Club, Berkeley Country Club and Orinda Country Club. He designed the original The Olympic Club Lake and Ocean courses plus many others which unfortunately did not survive housing developments on land that became more valuable as America grew. He was guided by the primary goal of maintaining naturalness in his designs. Watson wrote:, “A good rule is to stress the importance of fitting in all grading work to harmonize with the surrounding territory, mounds, slopes, grassy hollows, sand pits, all have their values in beautifying the setting of our greens and in giving them distinctive definition — if artificially arranged without appearance of artificiality.” He also believed that a course is more interesting if every green has a character all its own, giving the player something besides the flag to view in approaching the hole.

Blackwolf Run was opened in 1988 as a 18 hole course and success soon necessitated opening a 2nd 18 hole loop. The new holes were placed outside the original holes leading to the Rivers Course and Mead- ows Valley Course. The Open was played on the original Championship Course or a combination of the current18’s. The putting green is a popular place for players and fans. The 18-hole private course began construction in 1904 and was designed by course architect Tom Bendelow. In 1913 the course was redesigned to its current layout by famed architect Donald Ross. In 1994, East Lake’s current golf course superintendent Ralph Kepple, CGCS worked with Rees Jones on a redesign of the golf course which included reconstruction of the greens, tees, fairways and bunkers, a new irrigation system, a new storm drainage system, a switch to Meyer zoysiagrass fairways, a new maintenance facility and many other upgrades.     The Early Years of San Diego Country Club By Dean Knuth It was a couple who had never heard of the game of golf who planted the seed that became the San Diego Country Club. Charles Douglas and his wife (recorded in the club’s history only as Mrs. Douglas) were out hunting for mushrooms one fall day in 1896 when they found a hard- spherical object that they could not identify. On their way back, the couple stopped by the home of Dr. and Mrs. William Edwards, who had moved to San Diego from the East, to show them the strange little object “that might have been some petrified shrub fruit.” The Edwards’ “were highly amused” by the find. It was a golf ball, one of several they had lost while trying to play golf in the heavy brush on a University Heights mesa. The Easterners introduced the Douglas’ to golf and enrolled them in what became, in 1897, the San Diego Country Club. A dozen or so charter club members and some hired men cleaned off the brush and tumbleweeds on the Balboa Park land loaned to them by the City of San Diego, and created a primitive 9-hole course with unimproved fairways and tamped-sand greens. The 495-yard second hole stretched from what is now the San Diego Zoo parking lot to the green situated on the site of the Old Globe Theatre. A clubhouse, about the size of a two-car garage, served as the 19th hole at Upas and Park Blvd. This is on the northside of the zoo.
