djkal The Staging of Affect and the “Elsewhens” of Documentary Space Dan Fleming A quarter of a century ago, the English critic and writer John Berger said, “The true stories of our time have to be able to reconcile a pile of clothes in a drawer with world historical upheavals.”1 This seems like an ideal prescription for documentary but, given our times of intensified globalization and the reorganization of “world historical upheavals” around a particular global narrative, the practical challenge behind Berger’s word “reconcile” seems even more daunting than it did in 1985. In particular, the “pile of clothes in a drawer,” the lived spaces of the everyday, the intimate, the personal, the forgotten, the material things tinged with memory, seem even more at risk of consignment to the category of the inconsequential. Certain durable public exceptions, like the piled and tangled frames and cracked lenses of the Auschwich-Berkenau spectacles, have achieved an iconic status as personal markers of world historical trauma (thus celebrities being invited to donate pairs of old spectacles to a 2008 exhibit in Liverpool, England, marking National Holocaust Day2) but, if anything, this has raised the bar on just whose “pile of clothes in a drawer” might connect with the “true stories of our time” that Berger envisaged. The recent opening of so many old drawers to the burgeoning “family history” genre (e.g. television’s Media Fields Journal no. 3 (2011) 2 The Staging of Affect Who Do You Think You Are?) tends not to facilitate this connection so much -

Vincent Ward Filmmaker + Artist + Writer
Vincent Ward filmmaker + artist + writer New Zealand filmmaker Vincent Ward is best known for his ability to create visually striking and magical worlds. What Dreams May Come (1998) won an Academy Award for it’s visual effects and was nominated for best production design. Three of his early feature films, Vigil (1984), The Navigator (1988), and Map of the Human Heart (1993) were selected for Cannes. Between them they garnered over 30 national and international awards. All three films have compelling and powerful performances by child actors. The Boston Globe called him “one of film’s great image-makers”, while Roger Ebert, one of America’s foremost film critics, hailed him as “a true visionary.” During his time in LA, Vincent was storywriter for Alien 3, and executive producer on The Last Samurai, a project he developed the underlying material for before finding its director and bringing the production to New Zealand. His recent docudrama Rain of the Children (2008) was voted by the audience from 250 feature films to win the Grand Prix at theaEra New Horizons Film Festival. Between 2011-13 Vincent produced two large format art books and nine public exhibitions of his cinematic installations and print and painting work, including a featured solo pavilion show for the Shanghai Biennale 2012. As a guest of renowned Chinese video artist and curator, Qiu Zhijie, Vincent’s work resided in an historic former cathedral on the Bund – in the heart of Shanghai. The recent U.S. publication Making the Transformational Moment in Film (2011, Michael Wiese) foregrounds his career and looks at the way he is capable of moving audiences through his use of image and story. -

Agnès Sigley Counsellor, Family Therapist, Expressive Arts Therapist, Auckland As I regularly invite my clients to inhale and exhale and connect with their breath, their bodies’ sensations, their hearts, and deeper parts of themselves through the expressive arts, I find inspiration and resonance in Vincent Ward’s art works. Vincent Ward (b.1956) is one of the most original and acclaimed New Zealand artists, and some have called him a visionary. His latest exhibitions, Inhale/Exhale were held simultaneously at the Gus Fisher Gallery, in the University of Auckland and the Wallace Arts Centre at the Pah Homestead in July 2012. Inhale was a cinematic installation while Exhale showcased painting and photographic print. I visited both exhibitions and attended some of the talks. As an expressive arts therapist I am fascinated by his work: the depth of emotions he conveys through these multimedia exhibitions, and, more broadly his quest into the human psyche as demonstrated throughout his work in film, which includes:In Spring One Plants Alone (1981), Vigil (1984), The Navigator (1988), Map of the Human Heart (1993), What Dreams may Come (1998), River Queen ( 2005) and his latest: Rain of the Children (2008). There is beauty and poetry in his use of images to define a moment, a relationship, a tension, and in his exploration of transformation, and vulnerability. -

Sydney Film Festival 2008 Announces Official Competition Films
Media Release Thursday 1 May 2008 Sydney Film Festival 2008 announces Official Competition films Sydney Film Festival today announced the 12 films selected for the inaugural Official Competition. The films include three films selected for Cannes Film Festival 2008. Of the twelve films, three are World Premieres and nine will have their Australian Premiere at Sydney Film Festival. The Sydney Film Prize is for ‘new directions in film’. Selected films must ‘have emotional power and resonance; be audacious, cutting edge and courageous; and go beyond the usual treatment of their subject matter’. SFF is the first Australian film festival to have an Official Competition accredited by FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations). The Official Competition is supported by the New South Wales government, which pledged AUD$1.8 million over four years in September 2007. The winning film will receive AUD$60,000, generously provided by SFF’s Principal sponsor, Hunter Hall Investment Management and a unique award created by Dinosaur Designs. The Official Competition Jury, comprising two Australians and three internationals, will be announced at Cannes Film Festival in May. All Jury members will attend SFF in June and each of the 12 films will have a red-carpet Gala Premiere at State Theatre within the first 12 nights of the festival. SFF will be hosting guests representing the competition titles. On 16 June, Sydney Film Festival, in conjunction with Opera Point Events, will hold an Awards Ceremony at Sydney Opera House Northern Foyer to announce the Official Competition Award and the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films. -

Ngā Kai Para i te Kahikātoa: Māori Filmmaking, Forging a Path By Angela Moewaka Barnes A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Film, Television and Media Studies) The University of Auckland, 2011 Abstract This thesis examines and analyses Māori filmmaking in Aotearoa/New Zealand and, in particular, dramatic feature films with reference to an indigenous global context. This thesis is grounded in Kaupapa Māori theory, a theory that is founded in Māori epistemological and metaphysical traditions. Film is an important part of identity formation and contributes to how we see ourselves as Māori. It shapes others’ perceptions of us locally and globally. There is a struggling but growing movement in the making of Māori dramatic and documentary films, which began in the late 1970s and 1980s. However, very few Māori driven and directed dramatic feature films have been made. Therefore, Māori pioneer filmmakers Barry Barclay (Ngati 1987), Merata Mita (Mauri 1988) and Don Selwyn (Te Tangata Whai Rawa o Wēniti - Māori Merchant of Venice 2002) are significant contributors to our cinematic history. Their films offer us unique and transformative cinematic representations of Māori in the form of dramatic feature films. Little research has been conducted on the conditions of Māori filmmaking, the processes and environments and how these may create barriers or encourage Māori filmmaking aspirations. In addition, only a small body of work exists that examines Māori film and filmmaking that is grounded in Kaupapa Māori theory. This study gives voice to our history and tells part of the story of pioneers in Māori film.
