THE CITIZENS POST FROM THE BOARDROOM

Good Evening All and welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for today’s Evo-Stik League South Division One South fixture between Winchester City FC and Evesham United. We would like to issue a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters that have made the journey from Evesham and we hope you enjoy your evening with us and have a safe journey home. Since we last played at home, the Citizens were beaten 3-2 away at Barnstaple Town. Thanks to all of the supporters that made the long journey to North Devon. Whilst Oli Bailey and Tyrell Mitford were both on target for the Red & Black Army, it wasn’t enough, and we unfortunately lost the game. On Saturday 10th November, WCFC made the short journey to Fleet Town. The pitch was checked by Fleet officials first thing on the Saturday morning and it was playable and no further inspections were required. When the officials arrived, they checked the pitch with Davo and confirmed that it was fit to play. However, shortly afterwards, the officials then returned to the pitch before then deciding that it was not fit to play and at 13:45 the game was called off. Thank-you to everyone that made the journey to Fleet, and an alternative date for this fixture will be announced in due course. Off the pitch, IK Hill has returned to City, re-joining the club from Alresford Town. This has signalled the departure of Matt Benham. A recent signing from Thatcham Town, Benham has joined Bitton AFC, a team closer to Bath University where he is based, so that he can get some more game time. Mark Fawley has also dual-registered elsewhere, with the full-back registering with local side, Romsey Town. Thank-you for your continued support so far this campaign – everybody at the club appreciates it! Please get behind the team for tonight’s big game and cheer the Red and Black Army on to three vital points! #youcitizens

THE CITIZENS POST DAVO’S DIARY

Good evening and a very warm welcome to you all for tonight’s league match against one of the favourites this season Evesham United, I wish their players, supporters and officials a pleasant stay and safe trip back later tonight.

It’s safe to say that the last week or two have been frustrating to say the least. Firstly, last home game we had the gut wrenching late farcical penalty decision costing us 2 points against Highworth after dominating throughout. Next we travelled to Barnstaple and put in a very poor performance against a side who had just won their first game against Paulton 4-1, to be fair they didn’t look as bad a side as it looked on paper with their results and we lost 3-2 with a very disappointing display, I noticed they went away and beat top of table Yate 2-1 on Saturday which didn’t surprise me as much as it would have others after seeing them the previous week, no papering over it though it was a poor day for us. We then trained extremely hard all week to be ready for a trip to my old club Fleet Town, the way they handled the situation on the day was very bad, no inspection followed by a downpour and not a single person on the pitch trying to fork it to get it on, also after the referee said would give it a go their management were surrounding the referee convincing them otherwise as I went into do team talk, lo and behold game called off, I did notice a couple of players who are key for them were unavailable so it didn’t surprise me, oh well we took the opportunity to have a get together and a drink and a game of darts in a local pub and it shows what a great spirit the boys have almost everyone and several supporters were there together, that’s what we are about as a club and I love that!

So, we now have had to kick our heels a bit but can’t wait to get out and get playing again starting on Tuesday! Player news long term absentee George Short is still out, Liam Gilbert has to go away with work for the next 2 weeks but after that is fine for remainder of season, Rob Carr misses next weekend but after that is also clear moving forward, we have brought IK Hill back into the club who is a breath of fresh air and eager to force his way back in, we do have a couple of other approaches going on and we will see what happens with that. On the exit front, Matty Benham has gone to get games locally to his Bath base and Reece Rusher we have agreed to move on (likely to Melksham) - unfortunately there are some codes of conduct with how to behave in my dressing room and he fell beneath that on a couple of occasions, he was left out of the squad on Saturday and requested to leave which we have happily accepted, it’s a shame as he has some qualities that he showed earlier in the season but flashes of quality is the easiest bit in football and in a group that is all about togetherness it is the correct decision.

We have had a tough few weeks, but I have every faith in this group and the little bits of tweaking we are doing, I am looking forward to the remainder of the season!

Enjoy the game, up the citizens!!

THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – EVESHAM UNITED FC CLUB HISTORY

The Evesham United Football Club that we know today dates from just after the Second World War when soldiers returning from action reformed the club and immediately joined the Worcestershire League. However, a club did exist in Evesham prior to the War, the “Town” reaching the F.A. Amateur Cup Final in 1923, losing 1 – 2 after extra time to London Caledonians at Crystal Palace.

Starting in the 1951/52 season, in the club’s first five years in the Worcestershire Combination they were League Champions twice and runners-up on two occasions, their lowest position being third in that first season.

In 1956 they left to join the Birmingham League and followed this with a move to the Warwickshire

League in 1959 before returning to the Worcester (now Midland Combination) in 1963. They won the league title four times (1965/66, 1967/68, 1968/69, and 1991/92) and reached the Challenge Cup Final on six occasions, lifting the trophy in 1988 and 1992.

Initially the club played at Crown Meadow, moving to Common Road in 1968 and opening the clubhouse in 1975. A terrific season in 1991/92 saw the club complete a memorable double of Midland Combination Premier Division Champions, thus achieving promotion to the Southern League Midlands Division, and the Combination Challenge Cup. They also reached the quarter final of the F.A. Vase before losing to eventual finalists Guiseley. Some £5,000.00 was spent on the ground and they marked their first season in the Southern League by finishing in a creditable 15th position. A number of Managers and poor seasons followed but in November 2003, former Coventry City defender, Davis Busst, was appointed a successor to Phil Mullen. Busst took over a club struggling near the foot of the Dr. Martens League Western Division but managed to turn things around and Evesham eventually finished mid-table with a creditable 50 points. The 2004/05 campaign saw Evesham take their place in the Southern League Division One West, with Busst in his first full season in charge with the experienced Paul West as his assistant. It turned out to be a season to remember for Evesham’s long-suffering fans with the Robins earning a place in the play-offs. A tense 2 – 1 victory against Ashford Town (Middlesex) paired Evesham with local rivals Bromsgrove Rovers in the play-off final. A crowd of over 800 squeezed into Common Road to witness Evesham romp to a 4 – 0 win and promotion to the Southern League Premier Division for the first time in their history. After a poor run of results, Busst left in February 2006and West stepped up to take over. Despite a marked improvement, Evesham were relegated on the final day of the season, finishing just one point behind Northwood. After selling their Common Road ground for housing Evesham entered into a ground share agreement with Worcester City whilst moves were being put in place to build a new stadium on the southern outskirts of Evesham. In 2006/07, the club took a step in the right direction with former Wigan, and Port Vale defender, West, again at the helm. Evesham lifted the Worcestershire Senior Cup for the first time, beating Stourbridge 2 – 1 in the final. The play-offs were also reached but unfortunately a late goal ensured Bromsgrove a narrow 1 – 0 win and eventual promotion. Season 2007/08 turned out to be one of the most memorable in the club’s history. The club took Blue Square Premier Halifax Town to a replay in the 4th Qualifying Round of the F.A. Cup before losing 2 – 1 at the Shay. In the Carlsberg Trophy, West’s side beat higher graded Bromsgrove Rovers and Corby Town on route to the 3rd Qualifying Round, before going out at Blue Square North Redditch United after a replay. However, it was Evesham’s league form that caught the imagination. Despite suffering three defeats in the opening six games. Evesham put together a remarkable run of results and stormed to the top of the British Gas Midlands Division. Only two more reversals followed in 34 league games and West’s side clinched the Championship ahead of Leamington with a game to spare. A massive 91 points were bagged, and a staggering 22 clean sheets kept in 40 games with the experienced Mark Owen topping the clubs scoring charts with 33 goals, including two hat-tricks. 2008/09 saw Evesham back in the Premier Division and finishing in a creditable 9th position. They reached the 1st Round Proper of the F.A. Cup for the first time in their history before bowing out to Torquay United at and completed a second Worcestershire Senior Cup win in three seasons when defeating Kidderminster Harriers in the final. 2009/10 was a season of struggles as the Robins finished in 16th place. After being just outside the play-offs when the bad weather disrupted the season, a disastrous run of only 2 wins in the last 25 games saw them in freefall, before they finally made sure of staying in the division with a point at home to Bedford Town with three games left to play. 2010/11 was again a season of contrasting fortunes with the club in the drop zone at Christmas and staring relegation in the face. However, some shrewd signings saw the club enjoy a tremendous run of form and climb the table to finish in a respectable 12th spot runners-up Salisbury City. After five and a half years at the helm Manager Paul West and his brother and Assistant Manager Leon West called time on one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. Matt Clarke was appointed as the new Manager at the end of November 2011 and joining him as his assistant was Rob Elmes together with UEFA B Qualified Coach Kieran Jackson. Season 2011/12 was a disappointment with the club being relegated from the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division and after spending six years ground sharing at Worcester City Football Club the Robins began the 2012/13 season in Division One South & West at their new Spiers & Hartwell Jubilee Stadium. A mediocre start to the 2012/13 season saw Matt Clarke and Rob Elmes resign from their positions with Paul West returning to see the team through to the end of the season. West departed in early May 2013 and was replaced by former West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland midfielder Shaun Cunnington. The experienced Cunnington managed previously at Willenhall Town, Alvechurch and Halesowen Town. The squad was re-vamped with high hopes for a successful 2013/14 campaign. However, after a series of poor results Cunnington resigned his position at the end of October with former Bishops Cleeve manager Paul Collicutt taking over as the new permanent boss. Season 2013/14 was a disappointing one for the Robins who finished 16th in the South & West Division. Season 2014/15 will be remembered as one of success and heartache for the club. The Robins enjoyed an excellent run in the FA Cup before bowing out to Conference South side Bromley in the Fourth Qualifying Round after beating higher graded Redditch United and Histon on the way. Following the FA Cup exit a remarkable run of form resulted in just one defeat in 28 league games and a second-place finish in the South & West Division behind Champion Merthyr Town. However, despite home advantage in the play-offs Evesham suffered a disappointing defeat against Larkhall Athletic. Season 2015/16 was another successful one for United who finished just two points short of the playoffs. Due to Cinderford’s refusal to accept promotion at the end of last season, United were originally placed in the Evo-Stik Northern League, but after a successful appeal were re-instated in the Southern League South & West Division. The 2016/17 campaign saw the Robins reach the South & West play-offs for a second time in three years but were narrowly beaten by Salisbury City in the Semi-finals. For the 2017-18 season, Paul Collicutt will again be in the hot seat looking to go one better this time around. In 2017/18 the club did not have a brilliant start to the season in either the league or in the cup competitions, losing to Newcastle Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round replay, having drawn at Newcastle ‘The Robins’ lost 3-2 after extra time. A first-round defeat at home in The FA Trophy to Cirencester town saw more cup misery, this was compounded when Stratford Town put Evesham out of The Bigfreebet League Challenge Cup at the very first hurdle. In the league victories were hard to come by winning just 8 of the first 18 games of the season. With mid-season form looking reasonable it was starting to look like being a mediocre season until United put together a fantastic late season run, winning 9 out of the last 12 league games. The play-off semi-final had an air of Déjà vu about it, with the scores between ‘The Robins’ & Swindon Supermarine being all level after 120 minutes, it was another season of not to be as Supermarine who eventually won the play-offs pushing Evesham aside 5-4 on penalties. Making the play-offs for a third time in four years was no mean feat, and one that would afford Paul ‘Colly’ Collicutt another tilt at promotion in 2018/19.

THE CITIZENS POST MATCH REPORT – BY MALCOLM CLARKE WCFC 1-1 HIGHWORTH TOWN

Winchester's attempt to obtain their first league win since August was thwarted when visitors Highworth who had been earlier reduced to 10 men converted a penalty with nine minutes to go.

Highworth who were last season promoted from the Hellenic Premier Division despite finishing third last season have made a reasonable start to this season and are joint leading goalscorers in the division. Their current captain is Wayne Turk formerly of Salisbury and one of their forwards is Callum Parsons who is a well-known opponent of Winchester's from his Swindon Supermarine days. Highworth are also former Hellenic League champions and reached the semi-finals of the F A Vase in 2014/15.

Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from Tuesday's line up with Joe Hayward who was serving a 1 match ban being replaced by another former Eastleigh scholar Ollie Griggs at right back and Connor Cocklin being replaced by Brad Gale with Joe Cook wearing the number 5 shirt.

Before the game a minute's silence was observed for Life President Terry Bone whose funeral like that of another club stalwart Tina Elkins was held during the week and was well attended.

Winchester made as bright start coming close in the first minute and Oli Bailey having a shot saved at the expense of a corner. Callum Parsons shot wide with a powerfully struck effort, but Winchester continued to press, and Rob Carr came close on a couple of occasions, once following a quickly taken free kick from Tyrell Mitford.

Toumani Sidibi came close for the visitors who always looked dangerous on the break, while Jamie Barron hit the bar for the home team. Just as it was beginning to look very much that a lively first half was likely to end goalless Winchester took the lead a minute before the break with Oli Bailey scoring with a well-executed chip.

In the second half both teams had half chances with Jamie Barron shooting over and Sean Wood having a shot saved for the visitors. However, Winchester began to defend deeply and Toumani Sidibi who came close on one occasion was a threat.

However, Sidibi was shown a straight red card for a foul on Jamie Barron which eventually led to the Winchester captain going off. Winchester had used three substitutes and with an extra man began to look more of an attacking threat with Carr coming close.

Ashley Edenborough had one shot saved for the visitors, but Winchester were looking comfortable until nine minutes from time the visitors were awarded a penalty. At the time many people did not see what this was awarded for, but it the indications were that it was for a push on Sean Wood. Edenborough though duly converted the penalty.

After the goal Winchester certainly increased the tempo in the search for the winner with substitute Liam Gilbert being involved in many of their attacks and the pace of Oli Bailey and Rob Carr always being a threat. They forced several corners and forced goalkeeper Connor Johns to make two crucial saves in added on time, but were unable to find a winning goal and had to settle for a draw in a game that they really should have won.

THE CITIZENS POST MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome Evesham United to Winchester for today’s game. To date we have played them six times, with the results of the games being played in 2012/13, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 showing four wins each, with all four seasons seeing one win for each team. Last season’s corresponding fixture saw us win 2-0 thanks to second half goals by substitutes Rob Carr and IK Hill, while in the return fixture Evesham beat us 1-0 with s goal in the 55th minute from skipper Adam Mann giving them the three points in what was Paul Fahy’s last match for the home team before moving to Finland. Mann left in the close season to join Bath City, having last year helped Evesham reach the playoffs where they lost in the semi-final to Swindon Supermarine.

This season they were in many people’s eyes one of the favourites to do well, but although they have at the time of writing they had lost four league games they still remained just outside the playoffs. Today’s game is a rearranged fixture having initially been postponed due to our F A Cup exploits. Both clubs exited the F A Trophy at the very first hurdle and I have already commented that I felt it was surprising to see established Southern League clubs play at this stage, while clubs new to the competition received an exemption.

Evesham are the northernmost club in the division and if they were ever promoted to the Conference they would likely to be placed in the Northern Division as have the likes of Bishops Stortford, Oxford City and Gloucester City have at different times done up. However, I believe they would prefer to play in this division than the Central division where they would face a lot of trips in a south easterly direction.

In 1951.52 they joined the Worcestershire Combination, later the Midland Combination, and they played in this competition in 31 of the next 41 seasons, with a 7-year break from 1955/56 to 1964/65 to play in the Birmingham District League and Warwickshire Leagues. Their sixth Midland Combination title in 1991/92 saw them promoted to the Southern League which they have remained in ever since.

Their best season in the Southern League was 2003/04 when they finished third in the Western Division and were promoted to the Premier Division, although in 2011/12 they were relegated back to the South Western Division, In 2008/09 they reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup for the first time where they lost to Torquay United, having the previous year been beaten by Halifax Town in a fourth qualifying round replay. In 1991/92 they reached the quarter finals of the F A Vase where they lost to eventual finalists Guiseley, In 2000/01 they won through three rounds of the F A Trophy, but lost a replay to Morecambe when victory would have put them into the last 16.

Evesham first came to my attention when in the second season of the F A Vase when they beat Moreton Town who were a good team at the time. They reached the 4th round proper of this competition twice in the first six years. Last season I went to their ground for the first time.

Players they have had who played who went on to play in the football league are Gary Stevens, Simon Brain, Kevin Rose, Andy Preece and Billy Turley with Andy playing in the Premier Division for Crystal Palace where he was Chris Armstrong’s strike partner having been signed for £350000.

Evesham is located in the Vale of Evesham which is often subjected to flooding and has a lot of history attached to it.
