Laura Graves (USA) is a 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist and a 2015 Gold and Silver Medalist. Graves is also an accomplished international FEI competitor and USDF Gold Medalist and has been studying the art of dressage for over 20 years. In 2002, Graves purchased her Olympic mount Verdades and began working with him. In 2014, Debbie McDonald scouted the pair at a dressage com- petition, and shortly after, offered to coach them. In the span of 12 months, Diddy and Graves went from unknowns to one of the top ten dressage combinations in the world.

What was your favorite memory from your trip to Rio? Laura: Hands down my favorite memory is when I finished the Grand Prix Special. We were neck and neck with the Dutch team and after my ride, my teammates came running down to the stadium to greet me. We had won bronze! What is your next big goal in the saddle? Laura: This year, we are looking forward to the (FEI) World Cup (Finals) in Omaha. After last year, every day that I get to ride this horse is just a joy. What is your next big goal out of the saddle? Laura: We are currently working to build our farm. It is a whole other full-time job, but I am excited. Did you learn anything new about yourself while in Rio? Laura: I learned how much I really like to compete. I’ve always known I was competitive, especially in my sport, but I truly enjoy the competition. How did Diddy handle the trip? Laura: Diddy has flown a number of times now, and he handled the trip really well. Getting to travel with other horses makes it quite easy. They go everywhere as a herd. Did you learn anything new about Diddy during your trip to Rio? Laura: I learned that he really likes a stadium. He doesn’t much care for small arenas with no atmosphere. He gets very excited when he knows it is almost his turn to go. How would you describe the dynamics of your Rio Dressage team? Laura: Each member of our squad is a very different personality. We all just happened to have the same goals, good sportsmanship, and horsemanship. Even though we are so different, we share a similar sense of humor and became the very best of friends! It’s hard to mistake Lutz, the 15.2-hand high 2003 Haflinger gelding by Argument x Mandy, when Week 7 Sponsor Awards he competes with Susanne Hamilton in the Global Arena at AGDF. This gelding may be little, but he has a lot of heart and talent, and that is what has made him such a fan favorite with equestrians all over the world. During the “Friday Night Stars” halftime last week, Susanne and Lutz recorded an astounding 58 two-tempi changes in a row to win The Dressage Foundation’s Two-Tempi Challenge, presented by The Axel Johnson Group! They received some of the biggest cheers of the night.

How did Lutz come into your training program? Susanne: We bought him in Germany in July of 2015 as a 12-year-old. His owner Tina Hinckley was looking for an elegant little mare, nice to sit on and preferably black. We made the decision to purchase Lutz instead, and we’ve never looked back. Tina is his primary rider. I will sit on him for occasional adjustments, but basically only take over the ride about a week before a CDI competiti- on.

What is his personality like? Susanne: He is perfect in every way!

When I do take the ride, we are aiming for a national Grand Prix, and that is not so far out of reach now.
