MAGDALIT BOLDUC: SISTER MAGDALIT HAS SERVED AS A CONSECRATED SISTER OF THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF THE BEATITUDES FOR 28 YEARS. SHE IS BILINGUAL IN HEBREW. SISTER MAGDALIT LIVED IN ISRAEL FOR TWELVE YEARS, AND HAS GUIDED PILGRIMAGES THERE FOR OVER 22 YEARS. LAST APRIL, SHE WAS APPOINTED LIAISON TO THE JEWISH COMMUNITY FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF DENVER, AND SHE JOYOUSLY DEVELOPED A MINISTRY TALKING TO CATHOLICS ABOUT THE JEW- ISH IDENTITY OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, AND TALKING TO JEWS ABOUT CATHOLICISM. GIVEN HER EXTREME KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE, JEWISH TRADITION AND THE HOLY LAND ITSELF, SHE WILL CERTAINLY PROVIDE A DEEPLY PRAYERFUL PILGRIMAGE EXPERIENCE. SR. Magdalit Bolduc AN INVITATION TO JOIN US! DEAR FRIENDS, STUDENTS, READERS, AND FUTURE PILGRIMS, NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM! THIS IS A JEWISH GREETING PRONOUNCED ALL OVER THE WORLD DURING FESTIVALS. HOW OFTEN HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT VISITING THE HOLY LAND? HOW OFTEN HAVE YOU SAID, “ONE OF THESE DAYS I AM GOING!” I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A TIME AND A MOMENT FOR EACH OF US, SET BY GOD… MAYBE THIS IS THAT TIME FOR YOU. WHY DO I TALK SO MUCH ABOUT JERUSALEM? IT IS MOSTLY OUT OF COMPASSION. I HAVE BEEN QUENCHED IN THE DEPTHS OF MY SOUL IN THE HOLY LAND AND I WANT TO SHARE WHAT I HAVE FREELY RECEIVED. THE OLD RABBIS USED TO SAY THAT A PIECE OF EVERY SOUL CAN BE FOUND IN JERUSALEM. I LIVED IN ISRAEL FOR TWELVE YEARS, AND HAVING GUIDED A LOT OF STUDENTS AND PILGRIMS, BOTH THEN AND SINCE, I CAN TESTIFY THAT WHAT PSALM 87 SAYS IS TRUE: “EVERYONE CALL SION “MOTHER”, AND NOT JUST SION, BUT THE WHOLE COUNTRY. OUR PILGRIMAGE WILL BE IN THREE PARTS. I HAVE NAMED THEM LIKE THE GLORY BE: IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. WHY? I HAVE NOTICED THAT OFTEN THE FATHER EXPRESSES HIMSELF MORE IN THE DESERT; JESUS, IN THE NORTH AROUND NAZARETH, MOUNT TABOR, OR THE SEA OF GALILEE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT IN JERUSALEM. FOR THIS REASON, WE WILL GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE LAND, SOUTH AND NORTH, WHICH IS NOT CUSTOMARY. I WANT YOU TO BE LED IN THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE SCRIPTURES, AND EN- COUNTER GOD, AS MOSES AND THE PATRIARCHS DID, IN THE DESERT. THAT IS WHY WE WILL START OUR PILGRIMAGE BY GOING TO THE NEG- EV THROUGH BEER SHEVA, RIGHT FROM THE AIRPORT. IT WILL CUT YOU RADICALLY FROM ORDINARY LIFE, WHICH IS A GOOD THING. WE WILL FOLLOW GOD THE FATHER, THROUGH THE BIG EVENTS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. THE SECOND PART IS WITH THE SON: JESUS WILL REACH OUT TO YOU IN GALILEE, THE PLACES WHERE HE LIVED, WALKED, MINISTERED, AND IN THE LANDSCAPE HE ADMIRED FROM HIS CHILD- HOOD TO HIS PUBLIC LIFE. AND THERE HE JUST MIGHT CALL YOU BY NAME. FINALLY, IN JERUSALEM, THE HOLY SPIRIT MAY BECOME A REAL PERSON FOR YOU, THROUGH THE FIRE HE WILL KINDLE IN YOUR HEART. EACH SOUL IS UNIQUE AND MIGHT NOT FOLLOW THIS PATTERN EXACT- LY, BUT I KNOW THAT EACH ONE OF YOU INVITED TO THIS PILGRIMAGE WILL ENCOUNTER THE FATHER AT SOME POINT, BECAUSE THIS IS HIS WILL, OUT OF LOVE FOR YOU, WHICH IS WHY YOU ARE READING THESE WORDS I AM WRITING. ALREADY, YOU ARE IN HIS PROVIDENCE. IT IS A JOY FOR ME TO INVITE YOU. ALTHOUGH OUR JOURNEY IS A PILGRIMAGE, IT IS NOT DESIGNED TO TEST YOUR PHYSICAL ENDURANCE. WE WILL EAT WELL, STAY IN GOOD HOTELS, AND TRAVEL IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED BUS, AND YES, THERE WILL BE SHOPPING TOO. HOWEVER, YOU DO HAVE TO EITHER BE IN SHAPE OR BE WILLING TO STAY IN THE BUS IF YOU BECOME TIRED AS THERE WILL BE HOUR-LONG WALKS EVERY DAY. OUR PILGRIMAGE WILL ALSO GIVE US TIME FOR PERSONAL REFLECTION, ESPECIALLY REFLECTIONS UPON THE BIBLICAL TEXTS APPROPRIATE TO EACH PLACE WE VISIT, BUT ALSO TIMES OF REST AND PRIVATE MOMENTS. MAY I TELL YOU A STORY? ONCE I COMPLAINED TO THE LORD: “WHY DO I HAVE TO LIVE IN EXILE FROM JERUSALEM?” HE REPLIED WITHIN ME: “IF YOU WEREN’T ABROAD, OUT OF ISRAEL, WHO WOULD TELL MY PEOPLE TO COME TO ME?” MAY YOU BE LED BY HIS WISDOM TO MAKE A GOOD CHOICE AS TO HOW AND WHEN TO COME TO HIM. BOTH FATHER JACQUES AND I CONSIDER IT A JOY AND A DUTY TO INVITE YOU. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ADD THAT I AM DEEPLY TOUCHED THAT FATHER JACQUES HAS AGREED TO LEAD THIS SPIRITUAL JOURNEY. HIS TRUST, HIS RESPECT FOR SOULS AND HIS PASSION TO GUIDE THEM TO UNION WITH CHRIST ARE VERY INSPIRING. TO LISTEN TO HIS HOMILIES EVERY DAY IN GOD’S LAND IS SUCH A BLESSING! HE JOINS ME IN SAYING: “KNOW THAT WE WOULD BE HONORED TO BE THE ONES TO BRING YOU ‘HOME’ TO THE HOLY LAND.” YOURS IN CHRIST, SR. SAMFORD ISRAEL INFORMATION Dates May 17-29, 2016 Itinerary May 17 (Tue): Arrive Tel Aviv After our meet-up at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, we take an easy bus ride to the coastal town of Netanya for a restful afternoon and dinner. Overnight: Seasons Hotel, Netanya May 18 (Wed): From Caesarea to the Sea of Galilee Our first day of exploring takes us to Caesarea Maritima, center of Rome’s rule over Israel and headquarters for Pontius Pilate. As we head north, we visit Mt. Carmel, the site of Elijah’s contest with the prophets of Baal. Next it is on to Megiddo, a store city during the days of King Solomon, for a look at Canaanite temples and the town’s ancient water system. From Megiddo, best known through its Greek name, Armageddon, we can imagine the scene envisioned by the author of Revelation. To close out the day, we ascend to the town of Nazareth, setting for the boyhood years of Jesus, before settling in at our hotel in the lakeside town of Tiberias. Overnight: Caesar Premier Hotel May 19 (Thu): North to the Golan Today we head north to explore the Upper Galilee. Our first stop is the important city of Hazor, famously conquered by Joshua during the time of the Conquest and again by Deborah during the time of the Judges. Leaving Hazor, we travel to ancient Israel’s northernmost city, Dan, where King Jeroboam provoked the prophets’ ire by installing a shrine housing a golden calf. We then visit the springs of nearby Banias, known in Jesus’ day as Caesarea Philippi, the location where Peter famously said, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” As we turn southward again, we visit the famous zealot outpost of Gamla before stopping at Kursi, the site where Jesus cast the demons into a herd of swine.

Day 6 Wednesday March 8 2023 Masada Ein-Gedi Mount of Olives Palm Sunday Walk Tomb of Prophets Garden of Gethsemane Masada Suggested Reading: The Dove Keepers by Alice Hoffman // Josephus, War of the Jews (book 7) Masada is located on a steep and isolated hill on the edge of the Judean desert mountains, on the shores of the Dead Sea. It was the last and most important fortress of the great Jewish rebellion against Rome (66-73 AD), and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Israel. The last stand of the Jewish freedom fighters ended in tragic events in its last days, which were thoroughly detailed in the accords of the Roman historian of that period, Josephus Flavius. Masada became one of the Jewish people's greatest icons, and a symbol of humanity's struggle for freedom from oppression. Israeli soldiers take an oath here: "Masada shall not fall again." Masada is located on a diamond-shaped flat plateau (600M x 200M, 80 Dunam or 8 Hectares). The hill is surrounded by deep gorges, at a height of roughly 440M above the Dead sea level. During the Roman siege it was surrounded with a 4KM long siege wall (Dyke), with 8 army camps (A thru G) around the hill. Calendar Event 1000BC David hides in the desert fortresses (Masada?) 2nd C BC Hasmonean King (Alexander Jannaeus?) fortifies the hill 31 BC Major earthquake damages the Hasmonean fortifications 24BC Herod the great builds the winter palace and fort 4BC Herod dies; Romans station a garrison at Masada 66AD Head of Sicarii zealots, Judah Galilee, is murdered Eleazar Ben-Yair flees to Masada, establishes and commands a community of zealots 67AD Sicarii sack Ein Gedi on Passover eve, filling up their storerooms with the booty 66-73AD Great Revolt of the Jews against the Romans 70AD Jerusalem is destroyed by Romans; last zealots assemble in Masada (total 1,000), commanded by Eleazar Ben-Yair 73AD Roman 10th Legion under Flavius Silvia, lay a siege; build 8 camps, siege wall & ramp 73AD After several months the Romans penetrate the walls with tower and battering ram.

  • Tikvah Daily: a Shabbat Reader
Tikvah Daily: A Shabbat Reader Friday/Saturday, April 3-4, 2020 Shabbat HaGadol, 10 Nissan, 5780 Exodus and Egyptology By Raheli Shalomi-Hen | Ilan Ben Zion April 2, 2020 The commentators of the new, lavishly illustrated Susan and Roger Hertog edition of Exodus in The Koren Tanakh of the Land of Israel show how understanding ancient Egypt illuminates the Israelite exodus—and our seders. The Plague and the Egyptian Frog Goddess Frogs played a special role in ancient Egyptian religious thought. Amulets shaped like frogs dating back to prehistoric times were discovered in Egypt, and the frog goddess Heqet, one of the earliest goddesses in the ancient Egyptian pantheon, was associated with fertility and birth, probably because of the large number of eggs laid by frogs in apparently effortless deliveries. In an ancient Egyptian mythological scene, Heqet helps the ram god Khnum to create human beings on a potter’s wheel and accompanies him as he leads the pregnant queen Ahmose to her divine delivery room. Since ancient Egyptians believed in resurrection, they included motifs of birth and delivery in their burial sites. They equipped tombs with amulets and artistic elements, including frog amulets, related to birth and delivery. Scholars have also suggested that frogs may have been associated with life after death because of a surprising natural phenomenon: Certain bodies of water in ancient Egypt, such as articial lakes, dried up during the summer. These lakes generally held large populations of frogs that disappeared in the summer months and returned when the lakes relled. Ancient Egyptians, who conceived of this phenomenon as an expression of overcoming death, associated the frog goddess Heqet with life after death.

Hannah M. Cotton The Impact of the Documentary Papyri from the Judaean Desert on the Study of Jewish History from 70 to 135 CE We are now in possession of inventories of almost the entire corpus of documents discovered in the Judaean Desert1. Obviously the same cannot be said about the state of publication of the documents. We still lack a great many documents. I pro- pose to give here a short review of those finds which are relevant to the study of Jewish history between 70 and 135 CE. The survey will include the state of publi- cation of texts from each find2. After that an attempt will be made to draw some interim, and necessarily tentative, conclusions about the contribution that this fairly recent addition to the body of our evidence can make to the study of differ- ent aspects of Jewish history between 70 and 135 CE. This material can be divided into several groups: 1) The first documents came from the caves of Wadi Murabba'at in 1952. They were published without much delay in 19613. The collection consists of docu- ments written in Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Arabic, and contains, among 1 For a complete list till the Arab conquest see Hannah M. A much shorter survey, restricted to the finds from the Judaean Desert, can be found in Hannah M. Cotton, s.v. Documentary Texts, in: Encyclo- pedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls, eds.
