Like many other immigrants, Russian-speakers (born in the former USSR) present with a number of health concerns. Many of the health conditions pertinent to this population are highly manageable and/or preventable. Empirical literature indicates low engagement in health-promotion, health maintenance, and screening behaviors in this group of immigrants. There is also an indication of a gap in research addressing culturally-based beliefs and behaviors of Russian-speakers in the US. To address a gap in empirical literature, a qualitative ethnographic study was conducted on the East coast of the United States. Twenty participants ages 36 to 83 years were interviewed along with participant observation at community events and analysis of documents (visual and print media). Data analysis revealed perceptions of health and illness to be influenced by perception of healthcare, and these findings subsequently guide health-related practices of Russian-speaking immigrants. The study also identified transnational socio-cultural ii connections to influence beliefs and practices of the immigrants who came to the United States after the USSR dissolution. Further research is recommended to examine the factor of transnational socio- cultural connections in greater details, and to explore diverse groups of Russian-speaking immigrants residing in various areas of the US. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks to my committee members: Dr. K. Autocracies as good at winning elections with the help of political technologists and sophisticated IT systems as those in Belarus and Russia are nevertheless still susceptible to fickle popularity felt by the ‘electorates’ for the strongman at the top. The less a dictator is popular, the more direct violence has to be applied to wage power. In turn, unleashing too much violence causes popularity to plummet even further. This confronts the regime with the unwanted downward spiral of increasing state violence that simultaneously generates instability, which in no time may morph into effective political opposition. And such opposition stands a chance of unsettling the dictator from power; an option best to be avoided.

The obvious inconsistencies of the chosen ruler's actions have been justified by citing the difficulties of finding acceptable means for reform and the notorious complexities of the transition period in this former Soviet republic that only recent- ly was relatively prosperous. The difficulties have been further exacerbated in Belarus by a significantly higher concentration (than in the other CIS states) of military and retirees, the majority of whom are opposed to any transformation. Seasoned Western diplomats and various emissaries of parliaments and gov- ernments of the democratic states, as well as of the all-European institutions, have insistently advised the Belarusian opposition to search for ways of tactful influ- ence over the insufficiently enlightened president, assuming that even he can be convinced of the necessity of following the path of transformation to a lawful democratic state respecting values common to all humankind. However, the chosen leader's lust for power and his desire to reign (as opposed to govern) have only grown stronger. His sentiments have been accepted and sup- ported by the old communist nomenklatura of both Belarus and Russia, as it became clear that, thanks to his purely Soviet-style education (Department of History of a provincial pedagogic institute and a military school of political instructors), Alexan- der Lukashenka would indeed resurrect the Soviet "communist" kind of order.
