Telephone- 845-0961-67 local 242 Link with Foreign Counterparts DFG-NAST The Deutsche Forshungsgemeinschaft (DFG), or German Research Society is a govern­ Accord Signed ment funded collegial body. It has an annual budget of OM 849 mio (or US $350) using the UNDP system of "pipeline financing" to various research institutions, uni­ versities, individual scien-tists and scholars for Germany. According to Mr. Lippert, sub-director of Asia Division, DFG, due to the postwar division of Germany, the West German science community has hesitated to create "academies of sciences" in the two German states. This has resulted in a de facto permanent division of the German nation. Although East Germany has an academy of science, there is no single body that can speak for the entire German science community except the DFG. The NAST and the DFG signed last December 12, 1983 an agreement of collaboration. Both parties expressed their enthusiasm over joint scientific research between labora­ tories in Germany and the Philippines. Present at the signing were: Dr. Paulo C. Campos, President, NAST; Dr. Melecio S. Magno, Vice-President, NAST; Dr. Reuben N. Navarro, Science Attache, Embassy of the Philippines in Bonn; and Mr. Ricardo G. Abad, Ambassador, Embassy of the Philippines in Bonn. Germany side: Prof. Eugen Seibold, President, DFG; Dr. C.H. Schiel, Secretary-General, DFG; Dr. Joachim Wiercimok, Head of International Division and Director of Asia Division; and Mr. B. Lippert, Sub-Director of Asia Division. Objectives: To facilitate the cooperation in matters of research of Philippine scientists in Germany and German scientists in the Philippines as well as bilateral projects; To facilitate collaboration between specialists in the scientific disciplines within their mutual competences. More on the Collaboration Agreement Exchange visits. Visits of postdoctoral in all fields of academic research, especially in the natural sciences and technology. This may be in the form of one to three-week study visits. Purpose: To visit laboratories in the host country for discussion and liaison. Or for longer periods, to carry out research projects or to learn new techniques predominantly in one place, with provisions for brief short visits. • Selection and nomination of visitors. The sending party will be responsible for selecting and nominating visitors from that country to the host party. In some cases, the host party may ask to consider favorably certain named scientists or certain subject areas. ACADEMY NEWS Page 3 Indian Academy An Exchange Agreement between the National Academy of Science and Technology Signs Exchange and Indian National Science Academy is indeed essential - for cooperation between Accord with NAST the scientific academies of the world. Thus, I NSA President Prof. A.K. Sharma said when he came here for the signing of the agreement, which was one of the highlights of the 5th Annual Scientific Meetlng of the NAST last July 9. During which time the I NSA head discussed at length matters of mu­ tual interest in such collaboration between the two academies with Minister Emil 0. Javier and Dr. Tito A. Mijares. Incidentally, Prof. Sharma came here together with INSA's executive secretary Mr. A.K. Bose; and Dr. T.N. Khoshoo, secretary to Indian Government's Department of Environment. The I NSA President Professor Sharma, of the Department of Botany at the Calcutta University, is known for his contributions to cytogenetics, cytochemistry and chromosome research. His book on chromosome techniques-theory and practice is now widely known, possibly better than the author himself. The I NSA head has established a center of advanced studies in chromosome research, one of the largest in the world and one of its kind in India. He has behind him 34 years in chromosome study, during which he introduced a new concept for the means of speciation in asexually reproducing plants. He developed a number of study techniques in chromosome research which are now widely used throughout the world. Presently chairman of the Research Advisory Committee of various national laborato­ ries and research institutions in his country, he likewise heads different science con­ gresses and meetings in India. With more than 350 researches and published works, he is a fellow of the Indian Aca­ demy of Sciences, National Academy of Science of India, Asiatic Society, Indian Science Congress Association, and Indian Botanical Congress Association. Dr. T.N. Khoshoo As secretary of India's Department of Environment, he is responsible for policy, plan­ ning and management of environment in their country. He has contributed much to cytogenetics in relation to plant evolution and improve­ ment. He is credited with the establishment of the Biomass Research Center, which utilizes marginal land for energy plants, like firewood, agricultural alcohol, petro and rubber plants, and which deals with biologically diverse problems. He has organized active groups on sewage use using algae, pollution tolerant plants, ethno botany, allergenic plants and many others. A.K. Banzon, Ph.D., Academician ABSTRACT-SUMMARY The hopes that plants will be the renewable energy source of the fu. ture is dimmed by the possibility that such energy plantations may have to take over the lands needed for food crops. An energy inventoryof the Coco· nut Tree shows a uniqueness in being able to provide both Food and Fuel without need for periodic replanting or re-growing for well over 50 years. The Philippine annual harvest of 12 billion nuts from plantings of 377 million coconut trees, furnish an annual harvestable biomass of 18.9 million metric 12 tons with an energy �quivalent of 85.9 x to kilocalories. The food calories (oil and oil-meal) constitute 17.5% of the total calories. The major portion (32.5%) of the calories is then useable for fuel. Thus the coconut is to be looked upon more an an Energy tree. The magnitude of this energy reser­ voir (equal to ca 35 million barrels of petro oil) should spur concentrated research directed at utilization. Discussed in the paper, is the energy value in terms of LPG, of a coco­ nut, a coconut tree and a hectare of such trees. The information helps answer such questions as: how can coconut trees make the family kitchen self­ sufficient in fuel? Our predicament re-energy, is too well-known to be further discussed.     HK J Paediatr (new series) 2003;8:15-20 Original Articles X-linked Agammaglobulinaemia in Hong Kong Chinese RCM LOBO, GCF CHAN, TL LEE, AKS CHIANG, HK HO, SY HA, YL LAU Abstract We reviewed retrospectively eleven Chinese children diagnosed with X-linked agammaglobulinaemia (XLA) and managed at the Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine of Queen Mary Hospital from 1987 to 2002. All of the eleven children had presenting signs and symptoms before fourteen months old, but diagnosis was delayed in most patients with the median age of diagnosis at 5.8 years (range 1.3-14.3 years). The respiratory tract was the most commonly affected site of infection (76%) before diagnosis. Haemophilus influenzae was the most commonly isolated microorganism before and after diagnosis. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) was given in all patients with a median dose of 700 mg/kg four weekly in order to achieve the pre-infusion IgG level within the normal reference range as well as control of clinical infections. The incidence of documented infections before IVIG replacement was 31 per 100 patient-months which decreased to 7.6 per 100 patient-months after IVIG replacement (p<0.0001). The height and weight centiles of the children also increased after IVIG replacement (p<0.01). Bronchiectasis was noted in three out of the eleven children who were diagnosed to have XLA late at 6, 12 and 14 years old. Adequate IVIG replacement could decrease the frequency of infections and normalize growth in children with XLA. It might prevent bronchiectasis if started early in life, which depends on early diagnosis of XLA.
