2012 Swamp Bats Roster Brett Barrett 1B Jr., Univ. of Southern Maine - Keene, NH Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’0 / Wt. 205 Barrett, a native of Keene, is entering his third summer with the Swamp Bats. Barrett played alongside current Swamp Bats teammate Chad Rafferty for the 2009 Keene High School state champions’ team. Last year with the Swamp Bats, Barrett hit .252 with one home run and 14 runs batted in. He is batting .309 with one home run, 17 runs batted in and three stolen bases so far this spring, along with a .989 fielding percentage. Adam Barry OF/IF Jr., Cal St. Northridge - Simi Valley, CA Bats: L / Throws: R / Ht. 6’1 / Wt. 215 Before landing in Cal St. Northridge, Barry played two years of football at the University of Wyoming, including defeating Fresno State in the 2009 New Mexico Bowl. In his first year with the Matadors, Barry batted .288 with 14 runs batted in and eight stolen bases, while also at one point tying the longest hitting streak in the conference (15 games). This spring, Barry is batting .265 with 15 runs batted in and two stolen bases. Jay Baum OF/IF Fr., Clemson Univ. - Alpharetta, GA Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 5’11 / Wt. 180 Rated the #15 player in Georgia by Perfect Game USA, Baum committed to Clemson University off the backs of an impressive high school resume. Baum was an all-region player at Centennial HS as a sophomore, junior, and senior, while earning region player-of-the-year in his senior season. As a freshman at Clemson this spring, Baum has started 28 games, while batting .248 with nine runs batted in.

Evan Campbell OF/IF Jr., Kent State Univ. - Beloit, OH Bats: L / Throws: R / Ht. 5’11 / Wt. 185 Campbell set nine career West Branch High School records, including records in hits, batting average, runs batted in, and home runs. In his historic senior season, he set a single season record of 12 home runs along with a .590 average. In his first two years at Kent State, Campbell started in 107 of 109 games, batting .335 with 34 RBI and .302 with 39 RBI in his freshman and sophomore years, respec- tively. This spring, Campbell is batting .362 with five home runs and 31 RBI. Joey Ceja RHP Fr., Univ. of Louisville - Ottawa, IL Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’5 / Wt. 230 Playing high school ball at Marquette Academy in Illinois, Ceja dominated competition. Ranked in the top 150 class of 2011 by Perfect Game USA, Ceja went 10-0 with a 1.08 ERA and 90 strikeouts as a prep junior. Drafted in the 35th round of the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft by the Florida Marlins, Ceja continues his strong play as a freshman at Louisville, posting a 3.18 ERA in five relief appearances. www.swampbats.com 2012 Swamp Bats Roster Luke Crumley RHP Fr., Univ. of Georgia - Cleveland, GA Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’5 / Wt. 190 A two-way player in White County High School in Georgia, Crumley batted .376 with 15 home runs and 33 RBIs his senior season. That same year, he also went 5-1 with a 2.68 ERA and 107 strikeouts for White County. His strong year helped lead his school to a 20-4 record, along with their first ever 8-AAA region title. In 18 appearances (2 starts) for the Bulldogs this year, Crumley owns a 1-2 record with a 4.44 earned run average. Dylan De La Cruz OF/IF So., Central Conn. St. - East Lyme, CT Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 5’11 / Wt. 195

As a freshman at Central Connecticut State University (2011), De La Cruz batted .309 in 49 games played, collecting 52 hits on the year. De La Cruz also batted in 25 runs that season. This spring for the Blue Devils, De La Cruz is batting .319 while leading the team in doubles with 16. He also has 21 runs batted in and two stolen bases on the year. A native of East Lyme, Conn., De La Cruz is entering his first season with the Keene Swamp Bats. Chris Fern LHP Jr., University of Virginia - Zephyrhills, FL Bats: L / Throws: L / Ht. 6’4 / Wt. 210 Fern played two years at St. John’s River State College before transferring to Virginia. There, Fern went 7-3 with a 2.70 career ERA, while holding school re- cords for career saves (17) and single season saves (9). In 2011, Fern was named the FCCAA Fireman of the Year. He has yet to appear in a game with Virginia to this point. Back while attending Zephyrhills High School, Fern earned four varsity letters in basketball in addition to playing baseball. Tyler Gauthier RHP Fr., Southern NH Univ. - Lynn, MA Bats: L / Throws: R / Ht. 6’5 / Wt. 235 As a freshman at Southern (2011), Gauthier made 6 appear- ances (two starts), posting a 1-1 record with a 1.56 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched. One of those starts was a complete game seven-inning two- hitter, in which he struck out three in a win over Saint Michaels. This spring as a sophomore, Gauthier is 2-1 in 16 appearances with a 2.57 ERA and one save. In high school, Gauthier lettered in baseball, basketball, and cross country. Kyle Gehrs LHP So., Iowa Western CC - Independence, MO Bats: L/ Throws: L / Ht. 5’9 / Wt. 170 Entering his second summer in Keene, Gehrs went 5-0 with a 1.37 ERA and five saves last year for the Swamp Bats. Gehrs led his high school to a District Championship his senior year at Truman High School in Missouri, earning first team All-Area as a utility player; contributing both as a pitcher and a hitter. As an outfielder, Gehrs earned first team All-Conference. As a sophomore at Iowa Western CC this spring, Gehrs is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA in 12 innings pitched. www.swampbats.com 2012 Swamp Bats Roster Andrew Grant RHP Fr., Univ. of Massachusetts - Westboro, MA Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’3 / Wt. 210 Grant experienced a lot of success at Westborough High School, winning league titles both as a freshman (2008) and sophomore (2009) along with a district title his senior season (2011). As a senior, Grant was named a Mid-Watch B All-Star, as well as being named to the Central Mass Superteam. Grant is second all-time at Westboro in strikeouts with 186 in four years there. This spring for UMass, Grant is 0-1 with five strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched. Ryan Horstman LHP Fr., St. John’s University - South Hadley, MA Bats: L / Throws: L / Ht. 6’2 / Wt. 180

Horstman was named a Daily Hampshire Gazette first team all-star his senior season in high school (2011) after going 6-0 with one save and a 0.25 ERA. Horstman also struck out 106 in 56 innings pitched, capping off a fine season in which he threw a one-hitter in the championship game to earn South Hadley HS their first ever Western Massachusetts title. So far this spring, Horstman has not made an appearance for St. John’s. Grant Kay INF Fr., Iowa Western CC - Omaha, NE Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’0 / Wt. 185 Kay had quite the high school career, earning All-State honorable mention his sophomore and junior seasons before getting not only the All-State nod, but the All-Super State honor as well in his senior campaign. Key was also a success- ful basketball player, winning a state championship his sophomore year. As a freshman for the Reivers, Kay is currently batting .384 with four home runs and 24 runs batted in. Artie Lewicki RHP So., Univ. of Virginia - Wychoff, NJ Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’3 / Wt. 195 As a freshman at the University of Virginia, Lewicki made nine appearances while only allowing one run in 9.1 innings pitched. In 2007 at St. Joseph’s Regional High School in New Jersey, Lewicki was named first team All-League. In his senior season at St. Joseph’s, Lewick recorded a 6-3 record with a 2.00 earned run average. So far this year, Lewicki is 3-2 with a 4.30 ERA in 12 ap- pearances (nine starts) for the Cavaliers. David Mahoney LHP Fr., Univ. of Connecticut - Colchester, CT Bats: L / Throws: L / Ht. 6’3 / Wt. 225 Mahoney attended Bacon Academy in Colchester, Conn. where he earned All- State honors his senior season. Mahoney was also a two-time All-Area selection. Mahoney enters his second year with the Swamp Bats. His uncle, John Shea, reached as high as AAA baseball in 1990 as a pitcher. Mahoney redshirted his first year at UConn. At Westhill High School, McAvoy won back-to-back state titles in 2009 and 2010, while also winning a state championship in basketball (2010). In his senior year, McAvoy was a Preseason Louisville Slugger All American, and later went on to earn many accolades including First Team All-State honors. This spring for Bryant, McAvoy is 4-1 in 11 appearances (seven starts), with a 3.30 ERA and 36 strikeouts. Cameron O’Brien C Fr., Univ. of Louisville - Tulsa, OK Bats: S / Throws: R / Ht. 6’0 / Wt. 195 In 2011, O’Brien led Bishop Kelley High School of Tulsa, Okla. to a state cham- pionship while batting .463 with ten home runs and eight stolen bases as a senior. He is the Bishop Kelley all-time record holder in doubles (53) and sacrifices (42). O’Brien earned All-State honors with his effort senior year. As a freshman at Louisville, O’Brien has started four games, while batting .222 with four runs batted in so far. Mike Papi INF Fr., Univ. of Virginia - Tunkhannock, PA Bats: L / Throws: R / Ht. 6’3 / Wt. 195 In his senior campaign at Tunkhannock HS, Papi was a 2011 Rawlings second- team All American while being ranked as the Baseball America #84 best high school prospect. He hit .531 with six home runs, 24 RBI with a .708 on-base percentage that year, while also throwing a no-hitter in the state semi-finals. A 30th round pick of the Angels in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft, Papi has started 28 games as a freshman at Virginia, batting .283 with one home run and 17 RBI. Joe Pistorese LHP Fr., Washington St. Univ. - Kalispell, MT Bats: L / Throws: L / Ht. 6’2 / Wt. 180

Now a freshman at Washington State University, Pistorese enjoyed a decorated career at Flathead High School in Montana. Pistorese was a four year All-State selection at Flathead along with playing American Legion baseball for four years as well. Pistorese has thrown four no-hitters in his career. In a game in his 2011 state tournament, Pistorese struck out 21 batters. So far this season for Washing- ton St, Pistorese is 2-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 43.1 innings pitched (eight starts). Chad Rafferty RHP Jr., St. Joseph’s Coll. of Maine - Keene, NH Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’0 / Wt. 180 A native of Keene, Rafferty won a 2009 state championship while posting a 5-0 record with a 0.75 ERA as a senior. After going 5-0 his freshman year at Saint Joseph’s, Rafferty followed up strong his sophomore year with a 6-1 record and a 1.87 ERA. He led the Monks that year in ERA, wins, strikeouts (68) and innings pitched (62.2) while setting a team record with a 21.1 scoreless innings streak. As a freshman for the Red Storm, Schwindel played in 34 games (18 starts), while batting .427 with 11 runs batted in. Schwindel has picked up his play as a sophomore for the Johnnie’s though, batting .325 through 38 games (31 starts), with four home runs and 23 runs batted in. Schwindel earned second team all- state honors along with being named to the first team All-Group 4 his senior year at Livingston High School in New Jersey (2010). Scott Simon RHP Fr., Washington St. Univ. - Spokane Valley, WA Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’8 / Wt. 220 Drafted in the 33rd round of the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, Simon looks to continue to improve this summer with the Swamp Bats. Simon redshirted his first season at Washington State. In high school, Simon lettered in baseball and basketball. His father, Mark, played basketball at North Idaho College. This spring, Simon is 2-2 with a 4.25 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched. Jared Walsh IF/P Fr., Univ. of Georgia - Duluth, GA Bats: L / Throws: L / Ht. 6’0 / Wt. 205 Even with undergoing “Tommy John” surgery in his senior season of high school, Walsh still posted impressive two-way numbers. He batted .488 with ten home runs, as well as striking out 83 batters 52 innings pitched. This effort earned him the region 7-AAAAA Player of the Year honors. As a junior (2010), Walsh went 4-1 on the mound with a 2.09 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched. This spring, Walsh has one home run, while batting .125 as a freshman. Nelson Ward INF Fr., Univ of Georgia, Emerson, GA Bats: L / Throws: R / Ht. 5’11 / Wt. 175 In his senior season at Lassiter High School, Ward led the Trojans to the 2011 regional title. He batted .426 with four home runs, 20 runs batted in, 16 stolen bases, and a .532 on-base percentage. It was his second regional title in high school, with the other coming as a freshman back in 2008. As a freshman for Georgia, Ward has started 19 games, batting .288 with 11 runs batted in and three stolen bases. A three-time All-Star (2008, 2010, 2011), Wilson won a World Series Championship as a member of the 2010 San Francisco Giants. Tim Stauffer RHP San Diego Padres Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’1 / Wt. 225 Another member of the 2001 Swamp Bats roster, Stauffer became the highest drafted player to ever have once played for Keene when the San Diego Padres drafted him fourth overall in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft. Stauffer quickly made it to the Majors, making his first major league start in 2005. Stauffer has been in the majors for parts the last past six seasons, including a full year with the Padres in 2011, when he recorded nine wins with a 3.73 ERA in 31 starts. Jeff Keppinger INF Tampa Bay Rays Bats: R / Throws: R / Ht. 6’0 / Wt. 185 A member of the 1999 Keene Swamp Bats, Keppinger has spent parts of eight seasons in the majors with six different teams. He made his MLB debut back in 2004 as a member of the New York Mets, where he posted a .284 batting average in 116 at-bats. Since then, Keppinger has played in the majors for the Royals, Reds, Astros, Giants, and now the Rays. Now in his eighth season in the majors, Keppinger has a career batting average of .279 with 33 home runs. I am a member of the Keene State College field hockey team and was part of the historic season this past year where we made it to the Sweet Sixteen round in DIII. I am treasurer of my honor society and volunteer as a youth soccer coach. Sports have always been a big part of my life and I’m looking forward to a great Swampbat season this summer!

Sammy DiTonno I’m from Castleton, NY. I’m currently attending Springfield College in Spring- field, MA and will be entering my senior year in the Fall. I am a sport manage- ment major. My passion in life is baseball and I plan to work in baseball for the rest of my life. I’m a diehard Yankees fan, sorry New England. I’m super excited to be working in Keene, NH this summer, and I hope to see another Champion- ship title for the Swamp Bats! Bring on the 2012 season!

Lindsey House Originally from Greenfield, IN, Lindsey has been living in New Hampshire for the last two years. She is currently attending Franklin Pierce University where she is pursing an MBA in Sports Management. While at Franklin Pierce, House has served as the Graduate Assistant Coach with the Women’s Volleyball program where she helped strengthen the program, leading to a 13-13 season record her second year with the team. House saw success in the classroom as well, as she was a three-time selection to the GLVC’s Academic All-Conference Team. Lindsey graduated from Saint Joseph’s in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She will graduate from Franklin Pierce University this August and will pursue a career in the professional sports industry.

Brian Johnson I was born and raised in Keene. Growing up, my life was based around sports. Once I started my freshman year at KHS, I decided to focus on football. I was a co-captain as a senior and was lucky enough to play in the VT/NH Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl at Dartmouth College. I attended Norwich University in Northfield, VT from 2005-2009 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. After Norwich, I enrolled at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire. After I complete my internship with the Swamp Bats, I will receive my Master’s Degree in Sport Management. I look forward to the upcoming season and meeting new people!

While at school, I have worked extremely hard and my efforts have shown. I was most recently a supervisor for the annual Spalding Hoophall Classic and have also served as a media liaison at the Discover Orange Bowl. I served as the 2011-2012 Director of Marketing for the Sport Management Club where I was responsible for all promotions, ad- vertisements, social media, and any other form of communication regarding the promotion of a club event or activity. I decided to focus on Sport Management upon enrolling at Springfield and have thoroughly enjoyed it these past three years. Bat Kids Hannah Drew Hannah is a bundle or energy that can be found after school doing a variety of sports of her own as well as supporting her brother and his baseball teams (14u Jr Swampbats & Babe Ruth) and the Swampbats. To relax Hannah enjoys creative crafts, duct tape projects and knitting.

Amelia Opsahl Amelia Opsahl is nine years old and going into 4th grade at The Grammar School in Putney, VT. She enjoys figure skating, running, and of course watch- ing the Swamp Bats! She loves animals and has two energetic dogs and a beloved cat. She lives in Chesterfield with her family.

Sam Robertson Sam is 11 years old and will be a 6th grader at the Keene Middle School this Fall. He enjoys baseball, soccer, basketball, Tae Kwon Do and snowboarding. He also likes spending time with his dog, Yazhi. Most importantly, Sam loves the Swampbats! He goes to as many games as possible, even traveling on the bus to away games.

Logan Thatcher Logan Thatcher is a 9 year old 4th grader at Jonathan Daniels School. He enjoys playing baseball, basketball and snowboarding, plays the saxophone in the school band and is a Webelos scout. He lives with his parents, Kevin and Briana and two younger siblings, Quinn and Olive.

Austin Wyman Austin Wyman is 8 years old and lives in Swanzey NH with his Mom, Dad and sister Makayla. This fall he will be entering 3rd grade at Cutler Elementary School. In his spare time he likes to tumble and skateboard. He loves all his animals, especially his dog Phil. Austin also enjoys watching the Swamp Bats and is a huge Red Sox fan! Michael Morgese Hailing from Cranford, New Jersey, Michael Morgese is going to be a senior at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. He is finishing his degree in Film, Video, and Interactive Media. At Quinnipiac, Michael is a member of the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network, where he enjoys broadcasting games from basketball to baseball to women’s rugby. He is also the manager for Quinnipiac’s men’s soccer team, providing video coverage throughout the entire season. He got involved at his local cable channel TV35 and has worked in all aspects of programming from cameraman to producer to director and sometimes a program host. Michael has received several awards for his work and was nominated for the New Jersey Governor’s School of the Arts which honored the best Communications Students in the state of New Jersey. He looks forward to a great summer with the Swamp Bats covering all of their games this season.

Marc Schwartz A native of Syosset, New York, Schwartz enters his first year as the radio voice and media intern of the Keene Swamp Bats. Just completing his junior year at Quinnipiac University, Schwartz has been involved with sports media and broad- casting his entire life. Throughout high school, Schwartz was the play-by-play voice for Syosset High School football, basketball, and baseball - broadcasting on the schools radio station (WKWZ). At Quinnipiac, Schwartz quickly became involved in the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network; the chief broadcasting network for nearly every sport at Quinnipiac. After one year in QBSN, Schwartz was promoted to his current position of Co-Director, where he is in charge of everything in the organization, from overseeing every broadcast to running it’s online blog and producing the monthly athletics newsletter. Schwartz is honored and excited for his position with Keene, and looks forward to spending a great season not only with the Swamp Bats family, but the entire Keene community!
