German-Owned Great Landed Estates in Wielkopolska in the Years 1815-1914
PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI II, 2017 FRYDERYK MUDZO Poznań GERMAN-OWNED GREAT LANDED ESTATES IN WIELKOPOLSKA IN THE YEARS 1815-1914 The upcoming 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) Uprising is a very significant anniversary for the people of the region, as it was – unlike the November and January Uprisings – the only one which ended in victory for the insurgents. In order to understand the circumstances preceding these events and the intricacies of the complex socioeconomic structure of what was then Poznań Province, research into regional history is necessary. It enables a broader un- derstanding of the events and historical processes relating to more closely situated, and thus better known, places and people.1 From the Second Partition of Poland until the restoration of independence in 1918, Wielkopolska remained under foreign rule for 125 years (except in the time of the short-lived Duchy of Warsaw). As Hans von Rosen noted2 “the Poznań land does not occupy a special place in the history of German culture and in the humanities. There are no great philosophers here, such as those of whom East Prussia can be proud, or great poets, whom neighbouring Silesia gave to the world in such a great number.”3 Von Rosen emphasised, however, that a specific group of “German Poznań inhabit- ants” with a flair for practical issues and at the same time of a gentle and friendly dis- position had developed over the centuries.4 Although the second part of the sentence seems to be a subjective statement, in fact a distinct cultural and ethnic community was formed in Wielkopolska within just one century. -
Imagining the Urban Poland: Revolution and Reconceptualization of Urban Society in the Kingdom of Poland, 1905‒1914
95 praktyka teoretyczna 1(39)/2021 KAMIL} ŚMIECHOWSKI (ORCID: 0000-0003-4614-8599) Imagining the Urban Poland: Revolution and Reconceptualization of Urban Society in the Kingdom of Poland, 1905‒1914 The aim of this article is to analyze how the concept of mieszczaństwo was redefined in Polish political discourse between 1905 and 1914 in conjunction with concepts of intelligentsia and bourgeoisie. My hypothesis is that before the Great War, in a time of powerful social and political revolutions that took place on the streets of Warsaw, Łódź and other cities, new ways of conceptualizing the urban society emerged. I shall discuss the circumstances that led to the forming of the concept of the Polish mieszczaństwo during the debate about the urban self-government in the Kingdom of Poland after the 1905 Revolution. As the city itself became the subject of political competi- tion, and the right to govern the city became a demand of the Polish public opinion. For National Democratic Party it was an excellent occasion to expand anti-Semitic rhetoric and promote the idea of the Polonization of cities as a long-term goal. However, I argue that this rhetoric would not find public response if the intelligentsia itself would not redefined its attitude to other groups of urban dwellers. The mieszczaństwo, which had no political meaning previously, became the main factor of the imagined modernization of Poland. Despite the price of the ethnic conflict it became obvious that Poland had to be urbanized to be modernized. Keywords: antisemitism, intelligentsia, Łódź, mieszczaństwo (burghers), moderni- zation, urban society, Warsaw praktyka teoretyczna 1(39)/2021 96 At the beginning of the twentieth century Tsarist Russia experienced many events that could be called “revolutionary.” Although the prole- tarian revolution of 1905 was the most important and the best recogni- zed of them, it had been preceded by profound changes in social struc- ture and mass communication. -

96 DOROTA MAZEK Extremely Helpful in the Interpretation of Old Polish Sources, Are Not, However, Quite Adequate to the Situation in Polish Lands
Acta Poloniae Historica 83, 2001 PL ISSN 0001 - 6829 Dorota Mazek THE WARDSHIP OF THE MENTALLY ILL IN THE POLISH-LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH C. The concepts of madness and questions connected with the actual position of mad people in modern European societies have so far been discussed and approached in many ways. Therefore we can look for information on the subject both in publications concerning collective and individual psychical experiences and in dissertations concerned with the history of psychiatry, law, literature and art and finally hospitals1. An attempt to take a comprehensive view of the under standing of madness in the modern era is Michel F o u c a u l t’s work Histoire de la folie à l'Age classique. The author, who applies the term of psychiatric discourse to the treatment of the subject in various epochs, examines the successive stages of the attitude towards the mentally ill until the emergence of mental hospitals at the end of the 18th c. He focusses his interest on the moment of the exclusion from society of persons in some way abnormal. Foucault’s work may be an inspiration to research into the situation of the mentally ill in the Polish-Lithuanian Common wealth. His statements concerning French society, frequently 1 Cf. e.g. J.
