  • Sketch Comedy 2019 Syllabus
THTR 470: Sketch Comedy for Theatre 2 Units Fall 2019—Mon/Wed—12-1:50pm Location: MCC 107 Instructor: Kirstin Eggers Office: MCC 214 Office Hours: By appointment — please schedule via email. Email: [email protected] Phone: (c) 323.898.7388 — emergencies only, email preferred. Course Description “The duty of comedy is to correct men by amusing them.” — Molière In this experiential writing and performance workshop course, students will explore and develop their unique comedic voices via the creation of comedic sketches, through the entire process — from idea generation, to writing, revision, rehearsal, and finally production and performance of a fully realized sketch comedy show, with an emphasis on creative collaboration and ensemble building. Learning Objectives Throughout this course, students will work to identify their own comedic viewpoints through the medium of sketch — comedic explorations of concepts, characters and situations. Students will learn sketch writing structure through the study of prominent existing sketches, and techniques for sketch performance and original character creation. Students are expected to generate a high volume of comedic concepts and written material to serve their own creative exploration, and their own work ethic and writing practice. Students are also expected to serve the needs of the group, and work toward building a true comedy ensemble. Although we will be working toward a final workshop presentation, this course is focused on process over product — you are not expected to be funny 100% of the time, or even 10% of the time. You are expected to be brave, be open- minded, and stretch out of your comfort zone to explore and strengthen your own unique comedic voice.

One particular accessory is making a splash both in men’s and women’s fashion. The hat, has been an ac- cessory for centuries, and it is making a comeback like Tiger woods...ok, not a good analogy. Making a comeback like Michael Jordan, there that’s better. So get out your grandfathers felt bowler hat or pick up your new fedora at the mall as soon as possible. I would leave the viking hat at home, but pretty much anything goes to keep your noggin warm and styled. In my personal opinion, the current style is not very original and went from one extreme of the bold mismatched colors that just “go,” to muted boring tones.

Wonderful! 137: The Scent of Jazzman Bruno Published June 18th, 2020 Listen on TheMcElroy.family [theme music plays] Rachel: Hi, this is Rachel McElroy. Griffin: Wait, my beard was scratching against the pop filter. I'm so sorry. My beard was scratching against the pop filter. Rachel: Can we get—can we get somebody else in here? I've, uh… I've decided to replace you. Griffin: Oh no! Because of my scratchy beard, and how it‘s always rubbing against the pop filter, and making unseemly scratchy noises? Rachel: Exactly that reason. Griffin: Listen. I was trying to show off… my incredible beard. Rachel: [laughs] Your incredible beard. Hi! Hi. Hi. This is Rachel McElroy. Griffin: Hello, this is Griffin McElroy. Rachel: And this is Wonderful! Griffin: And this is a show where… ugh, dang it! It‘s doing it again, this big, lustrous freaking beard! I'm so sorry, everybody. This is embarrassing. It never happens. Tell everyone about the beard. It‘s pretty remarkable, isn't it? I don't know why I've chosen to highlight it. Rachel: [laughs] Um, the beard is not something I had really noticed until immediately after you said that there was a beard. So, that‘s about where we‘re at, I think. Griffin: Wow. [pause] Wow. Maybe we should bring someone else in. Rachel: [laughs] Griffin: [fake holding back tears] Maybe bring in Henry. And he could take my spot. ‗Cause you would never disrespect him in front of our— Rachel: He doesn‘t have a beard. Griffin: That is true.

  • 1 Hard-Partying Brothers Mike (Adam Devine
Hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister's Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo. Mike and Dave Stangle are young, adventurous, fun-loving and, some would even say, obnoxious. The “some” would include other members of the Stangle family. So when their sister Jeanie announces she’s getting married, the family holds an intervention, demanding that Mike and Dave bring dates. Respectable dates! The reason for the intervention is revealed through quick flashbacks that recall the guys’ antics over the years at Stangle family gatherings. Everyone’s having a good time, things are going smoothly, and then Mike and Dave show up stag, get drunk, hit on the girls, act like idiots and ruin the celebration. Therefore, dates! To fulfill their family’s request Mike and Dave turn to the best source of decent, respectable girls they can think of: Craigslist. They place an ad promising that their selected companions will receive an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii and the chance to participate in all of the Stangle family wedding-related activities. The ad goes viral, and the response is so overwhelming that Mike and Dave have no choice but to audition the candidates. They meet with nice girls, grungy girls, weird girls, paranoid girls, militant girls, twin girls that look like guys, girls that are guys. The dates they hadn’t counted on are Tatiana and Alice.
