February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. After eight years of Monk’s obsessive-compulsive hand-wiping, pole-touching and mystery-solving “Monk.” the often under-appreciated Final Case show that re-vitalized USA Network, made Shalhoub into an Emmy- By Joe Rhodes winning star and spawned a wave of quirkily-observant tv detective imitators, has finally come to an end. The final episode, because this is “Monk,” will put everything in its place. Before it ends – with a Randy Newman song written especially for the finale – loyal viewers will have the answers they’ve been waiting for: Who killed Monk’s wife, Trudy, the crime that sent him into a catatonic state and has hung over the series from the very first episode? Will he be reinstated as a San Francisco detective? Will he ever unbutton that top shirt button? Is that Captain Mr. Monk would not have enjoyed Stottlemeyer’s real hair? TAKING ON THE ‘TIPPING POINT’: TRANSGENDER REPRESENTATION ACROSS POPULAR AND DIGITAL CULTURE By AJ Ripley Master of Fine Arts, University of Victoria, 2011 Bachelor of Arts, St. Thomas University, 2008 A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate Academic Unit of Interdisciplinary Studies Supervisor: Lauren Cruikshank, Ph.D., Dept. of Culture and Media Studies Examining Board: Chloë Brushwood-Rose, Ph.D., Faculty of Education, York University Sabine LeBel, Ph.D., Dept. of Culture and Media Studies Casey Burkholder, Ph.D., Faculty of Education External Examiner: Cael Keegan, Ph.D., Dept. of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Liberal Studies, Grand Valley State University This dissertation is accepted by the Dean of Graduate Studies THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK April, 2020 © AJ Ripley, 2020 i ABSTRACT As more transgender images move from the shadows of intelligibility to mainstream media, the question of visibility remains critical. This dissertation explores examples of how transgender cultural production can highlight less visible transgender narratives already in circulation by examining the Amazon Prime television show, Transparent, and self-representations of transmasculinity across the Instagram hashtag #ftm and a 90-week Tumblr blog about gender transition entitled Trans Canada (My Way). This dissertation illustrates how these examples both adhere to and resist dominant discourses about transness in an effort to move beyond discerning between good and bad representation and instead to lobby for more and different transgender representation. Using the frameworks of critical transgender studies, media studies, queer theory and creative nonfiction, this dissertation explores the process of telling transness and considers how individuals use self- respresentation to exact agency over how their transgender identities and bodies are spoken of and for.

The set design for the 88th annual production, For the Record, called for a massive 11-foot-diameter rotating globe suspended above the stage and wrapped in the masthead of the show’s fictional newspaper, the Chicago Offering. Northwestern’s set, scenery, and paint shops are located in the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts, but Waa-Mu is performed in Cahn Auditorium. How to pull off such a planetary transplant? By deflating Earth. The globe began as a plain white (albeit custom-built) inflatable balloon, but after its initial multisection muslin wrap was created (to determine shrinkage), it was deflated, rigged, reinflated, motorized, map-designed, taped for a paint mask, primed, painted, and unpeeled to reveal computer-generated, to-scale continents.
