Brown Law School Prep Program, PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 2000 – Present John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, New York Outcomes/Assessment Coordinator, Latin American & Latina/o Studies Department, (2013 – Present) • Lead faculty team generating outcomes and assessments for College General Education Requirements (Pathways) and departmental major to ensure learning outcomes are being met. • Compile assessment reports for department and college’s administration. • Lead Adelante! Program - aimed at retention of Latina/o and low income students at our Hispanic Serving Institution and gather related data on comparative Latina/o student retention. Associate Professor - Latin American & Latina/o Studies Department, (2010 – Present) • Possess an overall student evaluation score of 4.69 out of 5 within 2013 – 2014, and 2014 – 2015 school years. • Exceeded student evaluation return rate for Spring 2015 courses taught; resulted in a average return rate range of 94.27%. Surpassed school rating of 55.8% for the same semester. • Promoted and tenured in December 2010 • Served as Deputy Chairperson from 2009 – 2010 • Served as Acting Chairperson from June 2008 to June 2009 • Lead Departments’ Outcome Assessments for College General Education Courses and compile outcome assessment reports. • Lead the Adelante! Director, Ronald H. Brown Law School Prep Program, (2004 – Present) A collaboration between St. John’s University School of Law, John Jay College, St. John’s University Undergraduate, York College, Medger Evars College, and United Negro College Fund Schools. • Direct academic credit bearing 2-year law school prep program aimed at diversifying legal profession. • Connect students with ACLU, NYS Attorney General, District Attorney and Unified Court System, to name some partners, for internship/research opportunities related to social justice issues. • Supervise college and law students interested in prison pipeline prevention. • Create, direct, and teach law classes at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY to first generation and low income and/or underrepresented students in the program. • Yielded approximately $3M+ per year in scholarships over past 4 years, 100% of students accepted to law school, and 100% of 2011 students accepted with scholarship, including 3 Dean Fellows. • Conduct research on pipeline education, compile data, write grants and grant reports, and produce related scholarship publications and national presentations. • Provide consultation services to governments and universities across US and Caribbean interested in creating legal pipeline education programs. • Create national/international, academic internships and fieldwork opportunities for students at all levels of pipeline and assist with supervision of Programs’ internship sites. • Develop students’ critical thinking skills via first year seminars, independent studies, learning communities and expose students to deeper understanding of the law and legal education. • Work with CASES program and supervise CASES interns to assist with integration in to college academic setting. • Work with children of formerly incarcerated persons to provide direct support services and re-entry referral services to their parent(s). Co-Director, John Jay College Study Abroad Program in the Dominican Republic, (2009 – 2010) • Co-Supervised and instructed over 28 undergraduate and graduate students conducting border conflict fieldwork investigations on the Dominican-Haitian border. • Taught Comparative Perspectives on Crime in the Caribbean course. • Provided co-supervision to John Jay College’s Comparative Law Internship in the Office of the Attorney General of the Dominican Republic. • Assisted in organizing and supervising fieldtrips including, but not limited to “La Victoria” super-max, other model prisons, and governmental and non-governmental organizations. • Conducted fieldwork observations and interviews with all aspects of law enforcement and judiciary throughout island, including Haitian-Dominican border. • Provided support to local NGOs dedicated to assist in providing re-entry support to formerly U.S. incarcerated deported Dominican citizens. Assistant Professor - Latin American & Latina/o Studies Department, (2004 – 2010) • Served as Minor Advisor and Adjunct Mentor • Taught courses in Interdisciplinary Studies Program for 1 year Coordinator, Supreme Court of the United States Internship, (2002-2005) • Created and directed inaugural CUNY Supreme Court of the United States Internship. • Advocated for expansion and institutional support of program. • Fundraised to support student participation and provided student site supervision in Washington DC and New York. Instructor - SEEK Department, (2000 – 2002) • Advised caseload of 300 first generation and diverse undergraduate students. • Supervised CUNY CAPS and federal work study students. • Developed and implemented academic prelaw initiatives for SEEK Department Dean. • Assisted Department of Latin American Studies with the Palenque Youth Violence Reduction and Alternative Sentencing Project in Washington Heights. • Developed peer mentoring program populated with SEEK students. • Created college’s first Supreme Court of the United States Internship. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2013 University of Puerto Rico, Center for Labor Studies, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico Guest Lecturer and Researcher – Sabbatical License • Supervised advanced undergraduate students participating in Research Methods course on domestic violence investigations. • Taught bilingual curriculum on domestic violence and its impact on global economy. • Trained students to create research instruments, data collection and interpretation of domestic violence crimes with a focus on Puerto Rico, but including Latin American and Caribbean. • Assisted students with human subject research certification and supervised translation projects. 2012 – 2013 InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico School of Law San Juan, Puerto Rico Scholar-in-Residence – Sabbatical License • Led research study of Puerto Rico Court’s handling of domestic violence cases under Law 54 with permission granted by the Puerto Rico Administrative Office of the Courts. • Co-supervised law students studying alternative sentencing program for first time aggressors of domestic violence entitled “Desvio”. • Observed monitoring systems utilized by Department of Corrections to track domestic violence aggressors. Interviewed Department of Correction’s CEO and other high level staff. • Gathered research information on monitoring systems and “Desvio” program. • Provided community trainings to Carolina/San Juan counties on domestic violence and international human rights law. • Conducted group interviews on domestic violence in Puerto Rico, police handling of domestic violence cases, and domestic violence protections for LGBTQ community. • Co-taught law school seminar to law students entitled Vulnerable Populations. • Led domestic violence research investigation, developed research instrument, and observed proceedings at specialized domestic violence courts around the island. • Conducted 150+ research interviews with jurists, scholars, victims, NGOs, local governmental
