It was the last hurrah for the Callaway political organization as The Honorable Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Albert Garofolo emphatically ended the once powerful reign of Atlantic City’s most notorious political family by sentencing Ronald Callaway a/k/a Jihad Abdullah to 9 Years in State Prison and top Callaway aide Floyd Tally to a 12 Year term following their convictions in the salacious blackmail scheme involving a prostitute and former Atlantic City Councilman Eugene Robinson. Abdullah and Tally, along with David Callaway inherited the tattered organization after former city council president Craig Callaway, the group’s leader, was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison on extortion charges in 2007. David Callaway is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Garofolo in early January and both he and Tally still face criminal charges related to allegations of voter fraud during the June 2009 Democratic Primary Election between Lorenzo Langford and Marty Small. Craig Callaway, who was originally scheduled for release in a little more than a month, is reportedly looking at spending an additional year in prison following the sentence that Judge Garofolo gave him for his admitted role in the Robinson blackmail scheme…

The pinnacle of the Callaway’s success was the 2005 mayoral election in which Bob Levy defeated incumbent mayor Lorenzo Langford. Following this victory, the Callaway Organization essentially controlled all facets of Atlantic City government, but this reign would be short lived. Soon after Craig Callaway’s imprisonment, Bob Levy would resign in disgrace amidst a James J. Leonard Jr., Esq. federal probe of his own. This would pave the way for the city’s former business administrator Domenic Cappella to briefly appoint himself as the city’s mayor during a tumultuous political period in the fall of 2007. Cappella, a onetime ally of the Callaway Organization, recently filed a lawsuit against the city of Atlantic City claiming his political ties and cooperation A Full Service Litigation Firm with law enforcement led to retaliation in the workplace. Sources expect that Cappella’s suit, which names various city officials as defendants, will air all, if not most of the city’s very R dirty political laundry following Lorenzo Langford’s 2001 defeat of Jim Whelan, the subsequent rise and fall of the Callaway Organization and the re-emergence of Langford following the mess Criminal Law created and left by Callaway and Levy. It sounds like HBO is focusing on the wrong era to create Municipal Court / DWI a mini-series after… Philadelphia Inquirer investigative reporter George Anastasia has been seen around Traffic Matters town working the closely following the city’s political underworld.
