Revelation 16:12-21 God's Mystery Finished REVELATION 16:12-21 GOD’S MYSTERY FINISHED Babylon is in utter darkness! • Capital of the Antichrist’s kingdom • Built on the shores of the ancient Euphrates river. • The city of Babylon has been plunged into darkness. Revelation 16:10–11 10 And the fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, CCSM 23-Jun-19 1 and his kingdom became darkened, and they began chewing their tongues because of the pain. 11 And they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pain and because of their sores, and they did not repent of their deeds. o A “painful” darkness – enough that people chew on their tongues! • Scorching under an angry Sun – people shout blasphemies against the Name of the Lord God. Revelation 16:8–9 8 And the fourth poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was granted to it to burn up people with fire. 9 And people were burned up by the great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has the authority over these plagues, and they did not repent to give him glory. • Babylon has been the center of martyrdom – many saints of the cross will be killed in her streets in the name of the Beast! Revelation 18:23–24 23 And the light of a lamp will never shine in you again! And the sound of a bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again! For your merchants were the most important people of the earth, because with your sorcery they deceived all the nations. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints and all those who had been slaughtered on the earth. 12 And the sixth poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, in order that the way would be prepared for the kings from the east. The “great river”: • Used 5X in the Bible o Possible connection to the 6th trumpet? Revelation 9:13–16 13 And the sixth angel blew the trumpet, and I heard one voice from the horns of the golden altar that is before God CCSM 23-Jun-19 2 14 saying to the sixth angel, the one who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who have been bound at the great river Euphrates!” 15 And the four angels who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year were released, in order that they should kill a third of humanity. 16 And the number of the troops of the cavalry was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. • An important river, causeway for the eastern armies to come to then war of Armageddon. o The Euphrates is no ordinary river. Its flood plain was the site of the first human city (Babel) after the great Flood and it was the site of Nebuchadnezzar’s magnificent capital city Babylon in the days of Daniel the prophet. On its shores will apparently be erected the even more magnificent New Babylon to serve as the capital of the beast in his brief but unprecedented worldwide reign in the great tribulation.1 • No Euphrates, no fresh water, no aquifers, no wells. o Ocean and fresh water turned to dead men’s blood. o Everyone suffering under the almost total lack of fresh water. 13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet three unclean spirits like frogs. 14 For they are the spirits of demons performing signs that go out to the kings of the whole inhabited world, to gather them for the battle of the great day of God the All-Powerful. • An army of 200 million troops? (Rev 9:13-16) • An army of demons as well! o The spirits of demons. (v14) • Do you notice the serious growth of ANTI-SEMITISM in our nation and other nations? Psalm 2:1–3 1 Why are nations in tumult, and countries plotting in vain? 1 Henry M. Morris, The Revelation Record: A Scientific and Devotional Commentary on the Prophetic Book of the End Times (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale, 1983), 308. CCSM 23-Jun-19 3 2 The kings of the earth establish themselves, and the rulers conspire together against Yahweh and his anointed: 3 “Let us tear off their bonds, and cast their cords from us!” • Unclean animals spewing out of their mouths o Their comparison with frogs alludes to their uncleanness, being aquatic animals lacking scales (Lev. 11:9-12; Deu. 14:9-10). o They also recall the plague of frogs in Egypt (Ex. 8:2-13; Ps. 78:45; 105:30). 2 • Unclean spirits will inspire ambassadors and do miracles through them to convince the kings of the earth that the success of their future lies in the whole earth cooperating together to stop Christ from taking over the earth at His second coming. o They will inspire the nations to fight against Christ, fulfilling Ps. 2. ▪ Just as Ahab was allured to battle and destruction by demons in 2Chr. 18:18-22, so the nations will be led to Armageddon by demons in the vain hope of defeating Christ (Rev. 16:13-16; 19:11-21). 3 2 http://www.spiritandtruth.org/teaching/Book_of_Revelation/commentary/htm/chapters/16.html#Revelation%2016%3A12 3 Dake's Annotated Reference Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments of the Authorized or King James Version Text. CCSM 23-Jun-19 4 • ALL the nations of the earth will gather to battle against Jerusalem o To destroy the NEW Temple o To destroy the restored people of God o TO DESTROY THE GOD OF THE PEOPLE. 15 (Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who is on the alert and who keeps his clothing, so that he does not walk around naked and they see his shamefulness!) • Behold – Jesus is coming! Matthew 24:36–39 36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows — not even the angels of heaven nor the Son — except the Father alone. 37 For just as the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38 For as in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark. 39 And they did not know anything until the deluge came and swept them all away. So also the coming of the Son of Man will be. Matthew 24:42–44 42 Therefore be on the alert, because you do not know what day your Lord is coming! 43 But understand this: that if the master of the house had known what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 For this reason you also must be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not think he will come. The Beloved Bride In Waiting Fiction has painted the picture of a maiden whose Lover left her for a voyage to the Holy Land, promising on his return to make her His beloved bride. Many told her that she would never see Him again. But she believed His word, and evening by evening she went down to the lonely shore and kindled there a beacon-light in sight of the roaring waves, to hail and welcome the returning ship which was to bring again her betrothed. And by that watch-fire she took her stand each night, praying to the winds to hasten on the sluggish sails, that He who was everything to her might come. CCSM 23-Jun-19 5 Even so that Blessed Lord, who has loved us unto death, has gone away to the mysterious Holy Land of Heaven, promising on His return to make us His happy and eternal Bride. Some say that he has gone forever, and that here we shall see him no more. But his last word was, “Yea, I come quickly.” And on the dark and misty beach sloping out into the eternal sea, each true believer stands by their love-lit fire, looking, and waiting, and praying, and hoping for the fulfillment of His work, in nothing gladder than in His pledge and promise, and calling ever from the soul of sacred love, "EVEN SO, COME, LORD JESUS.” And one of these nights, while the world is busy with its happy frivolities, and laughing at the maiden on the shore, a form shall rise over the surging waves, as once on Galilee, to vindicate forever all their watching and devotion, and bring to the faithful and constant heart a joy, and glory, and triumph which nevermore shall end. Matthew 25:1–13 1 “Then the kingdom of heaven may be compared to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 For when the foolish ones took their lamps, they did not take olive oil with them. 4 But the wise ones took olive oil in flasks with their lamps. 5 And when the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 But in the middle of the night there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish ones said to the wise ones, ‘Give us some of your olive oil, because our lamps are going out!’ 9 But the wise ones answered saying, “Certainly there will never be enough for us and for you! Go instead to those who sell olive oil and buy some for yourselves.’ CCSM 23-Jun-19 6 10 But while they had gone away to buy it the bridegroom arrived, and those who were ready went inside with him to the wedding celebration, and the door was shut.

  • The Seven Last Plagues Lesson #11 for March 16, 2019 Scriptures: Revelation 15:1,4; 7:1-3; 14:9-10; 16:1-12,16; 17:1; Daniel 5; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12
The Book of Revelation The Seven Last Plagues Lesson #11 for March 16, 2019 Scriptures: Revelation 15:1,4; 7:1-3; 14:9-10; 16:1-12,16; 17:1; Daniel 5; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12. 1. Revelation 15 and especially 16 describe what are known as the seven last plagues. However, Revelation 15:2-4 talk about a group of people standing on the sea of glass in heaven, praising and honoring God. How is that related? Did John change the subject? 2. Revelation 15:5-8 set up the heavenly context for the giving of the seven last plagues. It is important to notice that no one is in the temple in heaven when these plagues fall. Normally, the throne room in heaven is full of millions of heavenly beings. This means that the events connected to the seven last plagues will take place after the close of probation. 3. But, the most important question to ask about the seven last plagues is who is the one that causes those seven last plagues? And what is the purpose of having seven final plagues if probation is closed and if no one will change his/her mind? An important verse to look at in connection with the seven last plagues is Revelation 11:18. It talks about a time of judgment when those who destroy the earth will be destroyed. 4. The group of people described in Revelation 15:1-4 will be victorious “over the beast, over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name.” (NKJV*) So, these people certainly cannot be those who are the main brunt of the seven last plagues.

  • The Fifth and Sixth Trumpets (Rev 9)
THE FIFTH AND SIXTH TRUMPETS (REV 9) Read Revelation 9:1-21 (NIV) **What Scholars Say** REV 9:[1] The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I (John) saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. THE FIFTH TRUMPET (9:1-11) VERSE 1 - REV 9:[1] The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I (John) saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. "A star" sometimes signifies one in a high position or even a supernatural being. “There shall come a star out of Jacob" (Num 24:17); Angels are called "stars" (Job. 38:7); in Isa 14:12 we have Satan referred to as “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!" The star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. It seems, therefore, that Satan himself is referred to by this symbol. The words he in verses 2 and king in verse 11, show that this is a person rather than a literal star. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. Satan or this demonic angel was given a key to the shaft of the Abyss or the bottomless pit. The Abyss or bottomless pit is a place in the depths of the earth where evil spirits were thought to be imprisoned (Luke 8:31). Satan then is pictured as opening the lid or the door (that can be closed or locked) to this Abyss, so that demons can be released to inflict men and women on the earth.

Exploring the Book of Revelation: Verse by Verse Chapter 9 CHAPTER 9 Fifth and Sixth trumpets Chapter 9 Introduction The fifth trumpet Recap Primary purpose of our Bible study is to understand each message as it applied The sixth trumpet to the church to which it was given AND its personal application for us today Reflections Revelation 9:1-6 1 Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So, the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. 3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6 In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them. Revelation 9:7-12 7 The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men.

  • Islam in Apocalyptic Perspective the History of American Apocalyptic Thought Offers Much Reason for Discouragement
Islam in Apocalyptic Perspective The history of American apocalyptic thought offers much reason for discouragement. Christians have been too eager to gloss biblical prophecy with extra-biblical assertions and morbid scenarios of Islam’s demise. Christian Reflection Prayer A Series in Faith and Ethics Scripture Reading: Mark 13:28-37 Meditation† There is certainly a shadowy and sinister side to apocalyptic, or should we say pseudo-apocalyptic,…[that encourages] sectarian- ism and exclusivism…. Focus Article: Here we can appeal to the apocalyptic vision itself, which is Islam in Apocalyptic universal and cosmic. God’s redemptive act in Jesus Christ Perspective restores humanity and the entire created order, and we move (Apocalyptic Vision, toward the end of history not aimlessly, but with the renewing pp. 46-53) and transforming of divine energies within us…. What is God’s intent? The redemption of humanity and the cosmos. That should be our interpretive lens. There is nothing in apocalyptic theology that demands that our outlook be sectarian or exclusive. Scott M. Lewis, S.J. Reflection Many Christians want to know more about Islamic practices, the Prophet Muhammad, the Qur’an, and how Muslim societies are organized. They may be ministering to Muslim immigrants or meeting new coworkers, guiding missionary projects or organizing business activities around the world, traveling more widely or retreating in fear of jihadist violence. Unfortunately, looming over their newfound interest are the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Some are misconstruing Islam through events in Revelation. “The horrific collapse of the World Trade Center towers might well turn one’s thoughts to the apocalypse, but something more than horror is What do you think? at work,” Thomas Kidd writes.

Revelation Notes Studies completed with Joe Focht, Chuck Smith, Jon Courson, John Walvoord, Henry Morris, Matthew Henry, Warren Wiersbe, William Newell, Tim LaHaye, and NIV Study Bible. Recommended reading: Joseph Seiss (seeing the separation of the Church and Israel although it was written over 100 years ago), John Walvoord (ex-president of Dallas Theological Seminary – The Revelation of Jesus Christ), and Henry Morris (The Revelation Record). Introduction: “Revelation isn’t hard to understand. It’s hard to believe.” – Henry Morris Rules for our study through Revelation – 1. Interpret as literally as possible. Metaphorical keys are “like” and “as.” 2. Follow the outline. (1:19) 3. Stay in sequence. “then…then…then.” 4. Look for Jesus – it’s really all about Him. Despite the abnormal attraction of Americans to the strange and paranormal (ie. Supermarket check- out lines news magazines), there is a great lack of Revelation being taught in the Church. The importance of Biblical prophecy: 1. Pressing the importance of living for Jesus today expectantly looking for the soon return of Christ. 2. Keeping the material/temporal world in perspective, in light of eternity. 3. Pushing us to live lives of purity. 4. Developing faith in us. - “Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.” (John 13:19) - Isaiah 41:4, 21-24, 26; 42:8-9; & 44:6-7 – God makes Himself known be telling of things that will come to pass. Written by John, who was likely the youngest apostle. (“The apostle whom Jesus loved.”) - The only apostle not to die a martyr’s death…“the martyrdom of a long life.” Tradition tells us (Iraneus, Jerome, Clement of Alexandria, Eusubius and others agree) that during the Christian persecution of 95-96 AD, Emperor Domitian tried to kill John in a vat of boiling oil.

  • The Fifth Angel Sounds Revelation 9:1-21
The Fifth Angel Sounds Revelation 9:1-21 NKJV Notes by Pastor Mike Sasso Introduction In chapter eight we saw the seventh seal of the great scroll in heaven opened by Jesus Christ. As the seventh seal was opened we saw seven angels standing before God, preparing to blow the seven trumpets. We discovered that these trumpets are the battle charges of heaven. With each trumpet sound God is declaring war on the God-hating inhabitants of earth. With each trumpet sound God is releasing more of His wrath upon the earth. This is a picture of indescribable wrath and judgment. Hell itself is seen in chapter nine as the bottomless pit is opened and every imaginable evil is released on the earth. Keep in mind as you continue your study of these chapters that even scholars from the same theological camps will disagree upon the exact meanings of some of the things we are studying. Many scholars consider chapter nine to be the most difficult chapter of the entire book. May God give you a heart to receive what the Spirit has specially for you. We know that all scripture is inspired by God and profitable (2 Tim. 3:16-17). So pray that you will profit according to the will of God as you study these verses together. TRUTH APPLIED: 1. Before you begin your study of chapter nine, review as a group the seven seals and their meaning. (Revelation chapters 6-8) 2. What exactly does all this mean? What is the point of this difficult text? 3.

  • Revelation, Session 4 Seven Trumpets Revelation 8:6-11:19 It Is
Revelation, Session 4 Seven Trumpets Revelation 8:6-11:19 It is perhaps most helpful not to think of this central section of Revelation as a kind of timeline, with the drama of the seals followed by the drama of the trumpets followed by the drama of the bowls. Rather what we have here is a kind of triptych, with three panels set up beside each other. Or we can think of it as a kind of split screen motion picture with events juxtaposed against each other simultaneously. In each case what Revelation affirms is the power of judgment and the hope of redemption. In each case the power of the judgment is presented in such dramatic, almost overwhelming images that it is hard to grasp the hope, but in each case there is a fundamental affirmation of salvation that is there if we can pay enough attention, or rally enough faith. The depiction of the trumpet will in itself will resonate with John’s readers or hearers. There is the trumpet that calls people to worship at the temple. There is the trumpet that sounded before the fall of Jericho. There is the trumpet that is regularly part of the scenario for the last days in early Christian expectation: “For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” (1Thess. 4:16) “Listen, I will tell you a mystery, we will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.

  • Revelation: Chapters 15:5 – 16:21
Revelation: Chapters 15:5 – 16:21 The Seven Bowls Revelation 15:1, 5-8 – Introduction to the Cycle The Seven Bowls cycle, like others before, is introduced as part of the final vision of the previous cycle. Verse one’s mention of “the last” is best interpreted as being the last of John’s series of sevenfold vision cycles as we move towards the conclusion of the book. The mention of plagues in verse one should also prime us for another connection to the Exodus narrative. The vision of the throne room of the temple shows how even in heaven, God’s holiness separates the inner sanctuary from even the heavenly creatures until his judgments are complete. The imagery of the golden bowls of God’s wrath stands in correlation to the golden bowls of the prayers of the saints in 5:8. In this way, the bowls vision cycle may be interpreted as a response to the prayers, specifically the prayer of “how long” that the saints under the altar pray in 6:10 during the Seven Seals cycle. Revelation 16:1-11 – The First Five Bowls This first bowl of sores draws a parallel to the plague of sores in Exodus 9:8-12. The first bowl reiterates the punishment as being for those who participate in the emperor cult (i.e. they wear the mark of the beast and have worshipped its image). The second bowl is reminiscent of the plague on the Nile (Exodus 7:14-25). Here as then the water turns to blood and the fish die.

THE IMAGE OF THE BEAST FROM THE LAND (REV 13,11-18) A STUDY IN INCONGRUITY Revelation’s images play a major role in engaging the imagination and shaping the perspectives of its readers. The central conflict between God and evil is portrayed on a cosmic scale through images of a seven-horned Lamb, a seven-headed beast from the sea, and a host of other fantastic beings. On one hand, the significance seems clear. The writer assumes there are conflicting demands on the readers’ loyalty.

It picks up events on this earth right at the blowing of the 7th trumpet from Revelation 12.
