October 2014 - January 2015 www.yarnharborduluth.com shop notes The wool season is upon us! Moving into cooler weather for me, I think of happily getting out my Lopi sweater. I love Lopi! The depth of the colors, the traditional yoke, and the colorful designs blow me away. It’s more often than not that when I’m in the Lopi section of the shop, I find myself wanting to start another sweater. Icelandic wool is light weight, so it’s a great choice for a long jacket style sweater. We will be having a trunk show in January with not only the traditional bulky sweaters, it will also feature shawls and garments made from the lace weight, Einband. I have been eyeing this yarn since I ordered it for the shop and haven’t yet taken the plunge. I’m not a huge lace knitter, so here is the chance to see if we all can be inspired by this beautiful yarn! We have another great line-up of trunk shows scheduled. Keeping it local in shop hours October with Allison Barta’s Irish Cable Knitting, this show will feature her Aran monday 12 - 8 knits including a traditional Aran cardigan, poncho, and slippers. In November, tuesday 10 - 5 we will be featuring a yarn tasting with Stephenie from Northern Woolen Mills wednesday 10 - 5 to get a hand sampling of their unique local blends. Some of the fibers include thursday 10 - 7 sheep, alpaca, bison, and llama from farmers and ranchers from neighboring friday 10 - 5 states. saturday 10 - 5 sunday 12 - 5 More inspiring yarns from hand dyers... This season we will be featuring mini packs from Three Irish Girls Yarn and Frabjous Fibers. These little bundles of 103 mt. royal shopping circle joy let you play with color work for small projects like baby sweaters, hats, or duluth, mn 55803 mittens. You could also use them in one of the many popular shawl patterns that 218.724.6432 require a range of colors, including Leftie, Light Waves, or Down the Rabbit Hole to name a few. These patterns are all available on Ravelry. Three Irish Girls is taking a well loved yarn, Park Point Lilacs, and treating you to 4 mini bundles. One is hand-painted and the remaining three are corresponding colors which can be found within the hand-painted colorway. TIG has also been (continued) treating us with their gradient skeins like Rosemary and Ravishing Coral. These skeins have a subtle gradation of color like a paint card swatch. And now these beautiful colors are also available in mini-skein bundles. Frabjous Fibers Wonderland mini-skein bundles are packed with five one-ounce skeins. Some give you a soft and gentle color gradation, while others wow with more pop. These little beauties are flying off the shelves, so get them when you see them or they will most likely be gone. Done Roving Yarns have come out with Frolicking Feet Transitions. Each cake is 480 yards with four transitions of color. These remind me of a mini bundle all-in-one. Each cake starts in the middle with one color and changes to the next four times with each color change a bit longer than the last for a very cool and fun transition! Between just the hand-dyers and our friends from Lopi alone we could stay inspired all season long, but there is so much more. We have many new yarns in the shop this season. Gina, a favorite in worsted weight, is now available in a bulky weight. We have a couple new yarns from Mirasol, including a super bulky, Ushya, and a fine fingering in the Sulka blend, Sulka Legato. These are just a few of the delicious fibers we are bringing in to tempt you. Come on by the store to check them out. Does it get any better than this? Both are ancient artforms, steeped in traditions. Both are engaging practices which can take years to truly master. Both can produce highly relaxed, meditative states. They are also the perfect complement to one another. While knitting tends to be sedentary, often involving hours of sitting, yoga is the perfect physical release. And many yoga poses can help to alleviate and even prevent some of knitters’ most common aches and pains. CustomFit Knit-Along January and February 2015 Knitting a sweater is a big milestone for a lot of knitters. There is something unbelievably satisfying and self-affirming about seeing that knitted sweater in your closet or on your body, and knowing that you made every stitch of the thing. Even as an experienced sweater knitter, I still experience a very real moment of awe upon completing any sweater I have been working on. Of course, not everyone loves knitting sweaters the way some knitters do, and even for those who love knitting sweaters there are very real challenges. How do you know if a particular designer’s pattern will really fit you perfectly? What if you know exactly what sweater you want to knit, but can’t find the pattern? What if you find the perfect pattern but you hate the gauge? What if you would rather fling yourself into the the center of Lake Superior than think for another moment about the appropriate amount of ease for a casual sweater? Designer Amy Herzog’s CustomFit pattern generator is a totally brilliant approach to knitting sweaters that will fit you perfectly, with no math or head-scratching on the part of the knitter. Knit a swatch of the perfect fabric for you, enter your measurements, and design your own sweater using the customisation options. It’s totally easy and perfectly satisfying. We are so excited about this new program that we would like to have a CustomFit knit-along. We’ll begin right after the holiday season, when people finally have time to do some easy, fun knitting - for themselves, of course! We’ll be there for the whole process with you, from swatching to blocking and we couldn’t be more excited. Please stay tuned to our website and our Facebook page for more details about joining the knit-along. We hope you’ll join us! 218.724.6432 page 3 events pajama parties October 10 - I Love Yarn Day featuring staff yarn picks on sale. November 14 - Gear up for the Holidays with fellow fiber lovers.
