Despite allegations that stem nearly fifteen years back, the Saudi connection to 9/11 remains relevant to this day. Historically, these two nations have shared a “special relationship” based off mutual strategic interests and oil wealth, but did this relationship begin to crack earlier than these recent events show? This thesis’ importance is that it helps reveal which aspects of alliances are most important to the United States and Saudi Arabia in their relationship. I hypothesized that the parts that matter most are the “pragmatic” parts of the relationship. -

H CURRENT HISPANIC-AMERICAN MEMBERS H Albio Sires 1951– UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE 2006– DEMOCRAT FROM NEW JERSEY “I am in a good position for New Jersey and my district,” Albio Sires told a Newark reporter in 2009. With seats on powerful committees overseeing the interests of his busy upstate district, Sires has been able to champion transportation and immigration issues that hit close to home. As he said, “You’re always trying to help your constituents.”1 Image courtesy of the Member Albio Sires was born on January 26, 1951, in Bejucal, Cuba. His family fled Fidel Castro’s government in 1962 and settled in West New York, New Jersey, where his parents, who had a grade school education, worked in the factories. He graduated from West New York’s Memorial High School in 1970 and earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City in 1974. Sires returned to his old high school to teach Spanish and English as a Second Language, coaching the basketball team after classes. In 1985 Sires received a master’s degree in Spanish from Middlebury College in Vermont. He is married to Adrienne Sires and has a stepdaughter, Tara Kole.2 In his first bid for public office, Sires ran as a Democrat for mayor of West New York in 1983, losing to longtime incumbent Anthony DeFino. Three years later he ran as a Republican for New Jersey’s 14th U.S. Congressional District seat held by Democrat Frank J. Guarini, Jr. Sires lost that year, but New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean soon hired him to improve the communication between his administration and the Hispanic community. -

Governing New Jersey: Reflections on the Publication of a Revised and Expanded Edition of 'The Governors of New Jersey' Abstract New Jersey’s chief executive enjoys more authority than any but a handful of governors in the United States. Historically speaking, however, New Jersey’s governors exercised less influence than met the eye. In the colonial period few proprietary or royal governors were able to make policy in the face of combative assemblies. The Revolutionary generation’s hostility to executive power contributed to a weak governor system that carried over into the 19th and 20th centuries, until the Constitution was thoroughly revised in 1947. -

THE WOMEN’S PROJECT HEALTH RESOURCE GUIDE The Women’s Project is funded by Providing court-involved women with excellence in integrated healthcare and employment services. 1 Women in prison have long suffered because prisons and jails have often been designed by men for men. In addition, women’s healthcare—as applies to medical, behavioral, including mental health and addiction, and particularly OB/GYN—has often been ignored at best or at worst been a source of maltreatment and malfeasance. We are most grateful to the strong leadership and support of Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin or their sponsorship and ongoing support of the Women’s Reentry Commission. Thank you to Governor Murphy for his commitment to reentry, supporting legislative enactments that expand reentry accountability, and providing for greater prisoner releases during the Public Health Emergency. Particularly, we are indebted to the members of the Commission, who have steered The Women’s Project to today’s resource directory, integrated healthcare delivery system, and navigation & case management referral. Through the clear and powerful support of women’s state legislative leadership, the Women’s Reentry Commission Report was issued as a critical pathway toward improving the conditions for women in prison and upon reentry. The Women’s Project is an outgrowth of that report, specifically answering the need for integrated women’s healthcare. The Resource Guide provides a comprehensive survey of medical, mental health, and addiction treatment services in each of the eight (8) New Jersey Reentry Corporation county sites. Working with the leadership of The Women’s Reentry Commission, NJRC case management staff, and our women’s health navigators, our goal is to provide the best healthcare for women leaving incarceration and reentering the general community. -

Ave NW #341 Washington DC 20015 Email: [email protected] phone 202-363-8602 fax 202 966 5191 Introduction Terrorism depends upon the presence of three primary ingredients: Indoctrination, recruitment and financing. Take away any one of those three ingredients and the chances for success are geometrically reduced. In the nearly two years since the horrific attacks of 9/11, the war on terrorism has been assiduously fought by the US military, intelligence and law enforcement. Besides destroying the base that Al Qaeda used in Afghanistan, the United States has conducted a comprehensive campaign in the United States to arrest, prosecute, deport or jail those suspected of being connected to terrorist cells. The successful prosecution of terrorist cells in Detroit and Buffalo and the announcement of indictments against suspected terrorist cells in Portland, Seattle, northern Virginia, Chicago, Tampa, Brooklyn, and elsewhere have demonstrated the resolve of those on the front line in the battle against terrorism. Dozens of groups, financial conduits and financiers have seen their assets frozen or have been classified as terrorist by the US Government. One of the most sensitive areas of investigation remains the role played by financial entities and non-governmental organizations (ngo’s) connected to or operating under the aegis of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Since the July 24 release of the “Report of the Joint Inquiry into the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001,” the question of what role Saudi Arabia has played in supporting terrorism, particularly Al Qaeda and the 9/11 attacks, has come under increasing scrutiny. -

Ben Bloker, U.S. Air Force Saudi Arabia and the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Attack 14/9/16 2 Saudi Arabia and the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act President Obama has made it clear that he intends to veto the legislation the House passed on September 9, 2016 that would allow families of those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to sue Saudi Arabia for any role its officials played in the terrorist attack. He should veto the bill and the Congress should pause and not override that veto. It is all too easy to understand anger the families and survivors of those who were victims on 9/11 feel, and the desire they have to find someone to punish and blame and for some compensation for their losses. It is equally easy to understand the mixed motives of a Congress caught up in the politics of tenth anniversary of the attack, an election year, and the desire not to seem soft on terrorism. Saudi Arabia is also one of America’s most difficult strategic partners for Americans to understand, and its progress, reforms, and strategic importance are often badly understated. It is easier to focus on the fact it is an Islamic state at a time when extremist threats like ISIS, Al Qaida, and the Taliban, than deal with the complicated security issues in the Gulf region and the fact the U.S. -

Close U.S.-Saudi official relations have survived a series of challenges since the 1940s. In recent years, shared concerns over Sunni Islamist extremist terrorism and Iranian government policies have provided some renewed logic for continued strategic cooperation. Political upheaval and conflict in the Middle East and North Africa have created new challenges, and the Trump Administration has sought to strengthen U.S. ties to Saudi leaders as the kingdom implements a series of new domestic and foreign policy initiatives. Successive U.S. Administrations have referred to the Saudi government as an important partner, and U.S. arms sales and related security cooperation have continued with congressional oversight and amid some congressional opposition. The Trump Administration, like its recent predecessors, praises Saudi government counterterrorism efforts. Since 2009, the executive branch has notified Congress of proposed foreign military sales to Saudi Arabia of major defense articles and services with a potential aggregate value of nearly $139 billion. The United States and Saudi Arabia concluded arms sale agreements worth more than $65 billion, from FY2009 through FY2016.
