Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

The Department in accordance with Article 14(1) of that Order considers it expedient for the purpose of improving the trunk system that the road proposed to be constructed on the route described in Part I of the Schedule (in this Order referred to as “the new route”) and the length of proposed new road described in Part II of the Schedule should be designated as trunk roads. The Department in accordance with Article 68(4) of that Order proposes on completion of works providing alternative facilities for road traffic to— (a) stop-up the junctions described in Part III of the Schedule to road traffic; (b) stop-up the roads described in Part IV of the Schedule to road traffic; and (c) stop-up the roads described in Part V of the Schedule to motor vehicles. The Register is available for use by the public in the Commission’s office. Under the legislation, public authorities as specified by the Office of the First Minister and the Deputy First Minister are automatically treated as registered with the Commission. All other employers have a duty to register if they have more than 10 employees working 16 hours or more per week. Employers who meet the conditions for registration are given one month in which to apply for registration. This month begins from the end of the week in which the concern employed more than 10 employees in Northern Ireland. It is a criminal offence for such an employer not to apply for registration within this period. Persons who become employers in relation to a registered concern are also under a legal duty to apply to have their name and address entered on the Register within one month of becoming such an employer.

    Local Development Plan Public Utilities October 2018 1.0 Introduction 1.1 This background paper has been prepared to draw together the evidence base that has been used to inform the preparation of the Fermanagh and Omagh Local Development Plan (LDP) 2030. It is one of a suite of topic- based background papers that should be read alongside the LDP to understand the rationale and justification for the policies proposed within the draft Plan Strategy. 1.2 It is an update of Position Paper prepared as the baseline evidence for the Preferred Options Paper (POP) in October 2016 and which identified the key issues that need to be addressed by the LDP. The paper provides:- (i) the regional policy context for formulating Local Development Plan policies for public utilities; and (ii) an overview of existing public utilities infrastructure including remaining capacity in the Fermanagh and Omagh Area Plans. 1.3 The provision of public utilities within the plan area is primarily the responsibility of a number of government Departments and statutory bodies as well as the District Councils. The main utilities covered in this paper are: • Telecommunications • Energy Supply, including renewable energy • Waste Management • Flood Risk, Drainage, Water Supply and Sewerage 2.0 Regional Policy Context 2.1 The Regional Policy context is provided by the Regional Development Strategy (RDS) 2035 and regional planning policy statements. This section highlights the RDS policy objectives in relation to telecommunications, energy supply, waste management and water, sewerage and flood risk. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.
