  • A Legal Analysis of Production Sharing Contract Arrangements in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry
Journal of Energy Technologies and Policy www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-3232 (Paper) ISSN 2225-0573 (Online) Vol.5, No.8, 2015 A Legal Analysis of Production Sharing Contract Arrangements in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry Dr. Taiwo Adebola Ogunleye Department of Business Law, Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Nigeria, Abstract Production sharing contract (PSC) is an arrangement used in the upstream sector for the exploration and development of petroleum resources. Several oil producing countries, particularly the developing ones have adopted it as a contract for the exploration and development of their oil and gas resources. Nigeria has adopted it for the exploration and development of the offshore and inland basin. This paper examined the concept and general basic features of PSC. It went further to look at the PSC arrangements in Nigeria and observed that there are various models of PSC executed in Nigeria and identified the significant differences in each one. In addition, it reviewed the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act, 1999 which gave legislative backing to the fiscal terms granted by the Government to certain PSC models. It evaluated the various models of PSC executed in Nigeria and ascertained the shortcomings in them. Keywords: production sharing contract, different models of production sharing contract in Nigeria 1. Introduction Production Sharing Contract (PSC) is a distinct petroleum arrangement that has been adopted by many developing countries in the exploration and production of their petroleum resources as it guarantees the sovereign right of the state over these resources and meets their economic desires by providing capital and technology for their production.

A Comparative Foreign Policy Analysis of Weak States: The Case of the Caucasus States Yasar Sari Charlottesville, Virginia B.A., Istanbul University, 1993 M.A., Old Dominion University, 1997 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics University of Virginia December 2008 Abstract Keywords: Caucasus states, Russia, foreign policy analysis, weak state The key features of foreign policy formulation and execution in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia are selected in an attempt to reveal the sources of foreign policy-behavior of new, post- Soviet (and in effect post-imperial) states during the 1990s. More specifically, this is a comparative study of the foreign policies of the Caucasus states as new states toward the Russian Federation as the ex-imperial center. The purpose of the dissertation is to verify the relative significance of internal factors and level of external assistance in shaping the foreign policy of weak states. Therefore, the key theoretical contribution of the dissertation is to understand foreign policy change in weak states during their early years of independence. The newly independent Caucasus states are weak states. The most urgent problems facing these newly independent states following their independence were domestic ones. The time period covered is between 1991 and 1999, which in turn is divided into two sub-periods: 1991- 1995, the period of confusion and 1995 to 1999, the period of consolidation. This dissertation centers upon the explanation of two factors: the level of domestic strain of weak states and their relations to the external world.

  • Qatar Partners Malaysia, Turkey to Conquer Islamic Finance Market
Qatar partners Malaysia, Turkey to conquer Islamic finance market DOHA — Qatar is planning an ambitious new initiative with Malaysia and Turkey to serve the $2 trillion global Islamic finance market from hubs in the three countries using common platforms and technology, as part of efforts by the Gulf emirate to overcome a blockade imposed by its neighbors and diversify its economy away from oil and gas. “We have a vision to cover the entire globe’s Islamic financial transactions between three financial centers: Doha, Istanbul and Malaysia,” said Yousef Mohamed Al Jaida, CEO of the Qatar Financial Centre in a group interview on the sidelines of the annual Doha Forum. “This requires international platforms and technology which we believe Qatar Financial Centre has.” Under the plan, Turkey would cover Islamic finance needs in Europe, Qatar would serve the greater Middle East and Malaysia would sell to Asia, he added. “That’s a big vision, we’re working on it and this is a new project,” Al Jaida said in the interview with the Nikkei Asian Review and a small group of other publications. Relations between Qatar, Turkey and Malaysia had “intensified recently and become a lot closer,” he added. “We share similar visions, we share similar progressive outlooks… so there’s a lot to be achieved between these three countries.” He did not give time scales for the project. The London Stock Exchange is currently a global venue for the issuance of sukuk, while Hong Kong and Luxembourg have also made inroads but Qatar believes the market should be led by Muslim countries, Al Jaida said.
