Lytchett Minster School | Newsletter October 2019 elcome to the October edition of Wthe Newsletter! I would like to thank all the parents who allowed their child to take part in our Open Evening on 19th September. We had over 1000 visitors attending this event and the feedback we received from them was very positive. They were particularly complimentary about our friendly, polite and enthusiastic student tour guides and the students who were helping out in departments, doing demonstrations and showing off our fantastic facilities. This year we were heavily over-subscribed, and following our highly successful Open Evening, we are expecting numbers to be very buoyant again next year. Should you or any of your friends/neighbours with school-aged children wish to come and visit the school during the day, please contact the main office ([email protected]) to arrange a tour. We are confident that you will be see our students purposefully engaged in positive, meaningful learning. These tours will take place every Tuesday morning for the next two months. October is a busy month, with Year 11 students gearing up for their first series of mock exams. With the advent of the two year linear GCSEs it is incumbent on us to prepare students appropriately and to ensure that they develop their long term memory skills for the significant challenge that the new GCSEs now present. We will follow up these mocks with a final ‘rehearsal’ in March 2020. Talking of rehearsals, our performing arts students are also busy preparing for their annual school production, which this year is going to be ‘Into the Woods’. I do hope you will be able to come and see this. It promises to be a most entertaining show. My thanks as always goes to Mrs Midworth and her team for all the extra hours they put in to making the production such a great experience for our young people. Earlier this month (17th September) we celebrated the excellent achievements of our young sportsmen and women at our annual Sports Presentation Evening. It was great to see our talented young people receiving medals for the contribution they have made to the sporting life of the school. We value our extra-curricular activities; they provide that extra dimension for a high quality, well-rounded education. We wish all our students - musicians, scientists, writers, mathematicians, designers, public speakers, performers and sportsmen and women - another successful year. Let’s always aim to achieve our Personal Best! This exciting new resource will be invaluable to the geography department, as well as providing data that can be used in other curriculum areas, such as physics and mathematics. The heart of the new system is a Davis wireless sensor array which we have mounted on the roof of one of the school buildings, collecting data on wind speed and direction, rainfall, temperature and so on. This information is received by two display consoles, one of which is permanently connected to the school network, logging the data for future analysis and use within coursework. The live data is also uploaded to the internet for general interest - for example, please see our weather station page (www.lytchett.org.uk/weather). Additionally, a large-screen display of live weather data is installed within the geography department. 3 Open Evening It was fantastic to see so many people at our annual Open Evening on Thursday 19th September! Over 1000 visitors came to look around the school, which was looking particularly stunning bathed as it was in late summer sunshine. Our visitors were shown around the site by our student tour guides who were great ambassadors for the school. It was also great to see so many students volunteering in departments, whether that be in the Food rooms, Science labs, Sports hall or general classrooms. Due to the increased numbers of prospective pupils and parents attending our Open Evening, the headmaster gave three presentations in the theatre, supported by Head Boy (Elliot Woodhouse), Head Girl (Ella Glass) and Chair of Governors (Jeanette Yorke). In his address, Andrew Mead spoke about the quality of education and pastoral care available to students at Lytchett. The photos of the Open Evening on the school website and Facebook page (a sample of which can be seen below) were taken by our Media and Photography teacher, Mr Gillett . If you would like to see the school at work, there are tours every Tuesday morning. Please contact the school office (01202 622413 or office @lytchett.org.uk) to book your place on a tour. If you are interested in your child joining the school sixth form, our Sixth Form Open Evening takes place on Friday 7th November 18:00- 20:00. There will be two short presentations in the theatre by the headmaster, Andrew Mead, and the Head of Sixth Form, Andy Hannaford, at 18:00 and 19:00. You will also have the opportunity to meet our sixth form teachers to discuss the nature and suitability of our A level and BTEC level 3 courses. We also extend a warm welcome to students from other local schools wishing to consider a move to Lytchett. 4 Open Evening (continued) 5 Official Opening of the Pavilion On Tuesday 17th September the stunning new addition to Lytchett Minster School’s facilities—the Pavilion—was officially opened. In his speech to governors, staff, parents and students of the school, headmaster Andrew Mead praised the landscape architect, Nick Williams-Ellis, for his vision in creating such a beautiful outdoor seating area, and thanked the PTA team for their incredible hard work in raising £50,000 to help fund this building project. The initial idea for an outside seating area was first discussed between the headmaster and the PTA in 2016. Under the leadership of its chair, Louise Christopher, the PTA team set about raising the funds through a variety of events, stalls and special bids. The headmaster said, “The Pavilion will serve as a legacy of the extraordinary support given to the school over the last six years by the PTA.” In their speeches, Head Boy, Elliot Woodhouse and Head Girl, Ella Glass thanked everyone who had helped create this new wellbeing area, saying it was already proving to be an extremely popular place for students of all ages to meet, chat and relax. A special path was created over the summer to access the Pavilion, consisting partly of bricks inscribed with the names of staff and students past and present. In addition to being used as an outside seating area, the Pavilion is also designed to serve as an outdoor learning space, a performance area and an outdoor café. 6 Sport Presentation Evening The annual sports presentation evening was opened by Mr Alan White who gave a motivational speech on working hard and aiming for your goals in sport and life in general. Alan White is a high inspirational figure for our young people; he epitomises resilience and determination, having had to overcome huge obstacles in his life. We wish him every success as he prepares for the next Invictus Games. Every student who had represented the school in a sports team or as an individual in the last twelve months was presented with a medal. There were also special awards for player of the season and most improved player of the season in each team. In his address, headmaster Andrew Mead thanked the PE staff for giving up so much of their time to enable our young sportsmen and women to take part in sport and compete against other schools. Sport plays a very important part in the school’s curriculum and in its extra-curricular programme, with a fantastic range of Motivational speaker and Invictus athlete—Alan White opportunities for students to discover and develop their sporting talents. In his address, Head of PE Ben Law reflected on the highs and lows of 2018-2019 saying a special thank you to parents for dutifully picking up their children at the end of training sessions and matches. In addition to some special awards there was also special commendation for Tom Adams, Year 10, (picture below) who is now competing on the international stage in the exciting sport of Go-Karting. It was great to see him with his go-kart at the Sports Presentation Evening. We wish all our sportsmen and women a very successful year of competitive sport. We look forward to celebrating their successes the same time next year. 7 Sport Presentation Evening (continued) Special Prize winners went to: Sports volunteer award - Ebony Macintyre Junior Special achievement award - Harry Fletcher (Football) Senior Special achievement award - Louise Burke (Golf - England U18 captain) Coach of the year - Mr Jack Daniels (Rugby) Sport performance of the year - Amelia Fumpston (Volleyball - England team) 8 Users of Microsoft Office Did you know that school students can download Microsoft Office to home computers for free?
